Nintendo Switch 1 and 2

I love how Nintendo tries to push third party games into being digital by pricing physical carts out of reach for a lot of publishers, especially greedy assholes like Square, while also having infrastructure that's straight out of the early 2010's. 2+ hours to download Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade pack for Switch 2, which is a little under 50GB. That's on wired ethernet too, though I don't think there's nearly as big a gap between wired and wifi as there was on Switch 1.

By comparison, the same game took under 15 minutes to download from GOG and that's despite the PC version being 10GB larger (and the Switch download still going at the same time).

switch 2 (LCD, no oled models yet)
Why do people still think there's going to be an OLED Switch 2? Nintendo is so cheap that the screen is still soft plastic that scratches if you look at it funny, and yet people still think they'll spring for OLED or AMOLED that can do 120Hz, HDR, VRR, etc. Best you're going to get is a refresh version with the EU battery (and hopefully larger considering the absolute joke of a battery life this system has) and if you're really lucky an upgraded LCD screen that doesn't have such an absurdly large bezel. That's kind of unlikely though, I'm not sure they can avoid the bezel because of how the joycons attach.

Quick PSA for anyone else playing Witcher 3 on Switch 2. The process of getting the upgrade pack is a bit convoluted if you have a physical copy for Switch 1. You have to patch the old version, launch it, use the eShop link on main menu to get to the upgrade pack download, and once that's done you can just run it whenever without needing the cart to be inserted at all anymore. And you can also free up the ~12GB that the Switch 1 patch used because it's no longer needed either.

if you have friends you can pass around the witcher 3 cart like its a polish hooker and everyone can do the same thing and own a copy of witcher 3 digital

you could even buy a preowned copy somewhere, do it, and return it but i realized theres really no chance i'll be playing W3 on my switch 2. its locked to 30-40 fps for one thing.

I’d give my left nut if Nintendo would do a decent UI with a modern non-2008 online experience with achievements.

Question for you all that have been playing Nintendo games since the Wii, does Nintendo still produce quality 1st party games or are they release and patch whenever? You know like everyone else.

Eh. I can’t recall many Nintendo 1st party patches. But I’m a Nintendo fan and typically think their games, although somewhat repetitive, are really high quality. Now, do you like the gameplay is more of an everyone has an asshole question.

I mostly skipped Wii and Wii U though. Played the fuck out of switch.

Look at the TOTK patch note history. Nintendo typically just fixes bugs and exploits. Speed runners love 1.0 versions mostly because they have the most stuff to exploit, not because the games are inherently broken without a day 1 patch.

i'd say maybe a third of nintendo first party games get zero patches and what you get day 1 is what you play 10 years later. i played paper mario TTYD or super mario RPG recently (cart) and it was wild how i insert the cart and just play, no patches for a game 2+ years old.

the biggest problem with first party games is that they care way more about gameplay mechanics, puzzles, and pacing than story and visual/voice acting. Which I'm fine with but sometimes it gets a bit grating with NPCs who look like shit, the Charlie Brown school of voice acting (everything is gibberish), and stories that tend to be simple and forgettable.

but when you compare stuff like super mario odyssey or breath of the wild to the utter garbage microsoft and sony are putting out its no contest at all. there's just a lack of visual polish due to hardware and less detail in textures. If you ONLY play nintendo first party games they tend to start feeling to "kid friendly" at a certain point. there's no fucking in a nintendo game (or blood usually)
