They did. and there really wasn't any hurry either. Bizarre.

Sony is increasing the price of all PS5 consoles by around $100 globally due to the shortage of RAM, so maybe releasing the Switch 2 last year wasn't such a bad idea.

Not really. Nintendo might have to do the same with the Switch 2. If they had just stuck with their aging console, they might have managed costs enough to keep the price the same or even cheaper.

Nintendo should honestly just release a screenless/battery-less Switch 2. A lot people don't even use the portable features of the console. It would shave off a ton from the price.

Funny you say that because if the rumors are true they plan to do the opposite soon and release an OLED version.

As long as they design with forward advances in mind then backwards compatibility has meaning. But if you are stuck on Switch1 load speeds and bottlenecks for all of time even with faster memory cards and better hardware then it's simply piggybacking. Eventually that it turns into "wait for the remake and buy it again for the better version" which is bullshit when it's only one gen back.
The load speeds are really fast if you own Switch 1 games digitally since they get downloaded to the internal storage. The problem is that the physical copies run off of the old microSD-speed carts because Nintendo are assholes and don't let you install to fast storage instead.

I'd take that particular rumor with a grain two-ton block of salt. Handheld uses HDR and small OLED/AMOLED screens that support HDR are still very expensive, and since Nintendo are too cheap to even spring for Gorilla Glass there's very little chance of an OLED Switch 2 happening.

I wish. My switch 2 is docked 99.9% of the time. Would have been nice to pay $200 instead of $500 or whatever the numbers ended up being.

If they did an oled switch 2 it wouldn't exactly be unheard of since they did that with switch 1
Right, but Nintendo came right out and said before the Switch 2 launch that there would likely never be an OLED model because of HDR.

The portable functions are really the only reason to have a Switch 2 over a PS5. It's really useful for folks that need to take a game with them traveling or on the go in general. Also useful if I'm tired and have to go to bed, but also want to keep playing something a bit longer. If it's PS5 I'm SOL.

All of that said, releasing a non-portable version would probably cut the price in half and get the system to a lot more people that don't need the portable features. They should definitely do it.

You have to understand the Japanese - Nintendo mind.

“It’s called the Switch, we cant just make a home TV only version of it that does not… switch… it has to /do/ something…switch-y-y.”

Well mobile gaming is huge in Japan.

Also you guys are fools if you think Nintendo would make a TV only version at half cost lol. They don't even put their games on sale.

I will say that the recent handheld boost update made a lot of Switch 1 games look better undocked. Stuff like Unicorn Overlord run at native 1080p on the Switch 2 screen now, looks noticeably clearer.

Switch Online is a lot better than the last time I had it (a year or two ago). The Sega Genesis collection in particular is waaaaay better. Problem is, for Sega, you want to have the right controller. Old Nintendo games I can generally play with any modern controller, since they're all evolutions from the Nintendo designs anyway. Genesis on the other hand has a very specific controller design that I really like, and playing Genesis games with the standard Nintendo button configurations just feels wrong.

Of course, the Genesis controller for Switch costs $55. They're charging even more for the N64 controller. You can get similar USB controllers for PC emulation for like $25 (half that if you don't mind skimping on weight/quality). Of course, it's Nintendo, so their retro controllers have to cost way more. It drives me nuts. Would be cool if their controllers at least also worked as PC controllers as well.

Its even built right into Steam
He's talking about the Nintendo Online Genesis controller. It should work on PC, but I don't think it's quite as simple as hooking up a regular Switch Pro controller. Personally I'd go with the 8bitdo M30 for 30 bucks cheaper if I was into that sort of thing.

Apparently they get identified at pro controllers from steam, people have used betterjoy to get the rumble function to work (N64) if thats important to you. Your suggestion is the correct one for ease however.

Does that M30 work on Switch Online as well as PC?

I have an 8bitdo SNES controller around here somewhere, if it works on Switch Online for SNES playing I'll see if I can find it, because that would be awesome.
