Have any of ya'll written a book, or have interest in writing a book?
I just finished my first book in December and my first novella last month but haven't heard back from agents or publishers yet. I also have a big chunk of magazine submission short stories planned for the next 2 years that I am working through each month but nothing has been published

Have you considered indie publishing on kdp?

I am trying not to but that is potentially in the cards
From what I’ve heard, unless you’ve sold 10,000 copies (with recorded sales, not give aways), or you’re already famous, it’s pretty impossible to get a trad publishing deal where they put any marketing behind you. If you do get trad published, you’ll have to pay for all your own marketing while they keep x amount of profits of sales.

Considering that 80% of new fiction authors last year were female, and unless you’re a legacy white guy like Stephen King or James Patterson, if you’re white cishet you pretty much have zero chance of getting trad published. Which is why I went indie.

25% of trad publishers don’t even sake 200 copies. 50% don’t even sell 1000 copies. I haven’t paid for any ads (yet), but I’ve sold over 300 copies so far just by street fairs, word of mouth, and organic marketing. I’ll start running ads once my second novel is released this summer and has minimum 50 reviews.

a lot of folks try to run ads on their first book which has zero reviews. It’s a waste of money imo.

Yeah, I can't argue with anything that you said. I'm in the more select genres of transgressive dark humor and epistemic horror, so the 80% female writers don't impact as much as other areas like Fantasy or Sci-Fi, but it's still a factor based on a majority of publishers moving towards more female-centric genres and titles because that's where the money is. I'm still really wanting to see if I can manage a traditional deal in the crazy climate but, we'll see.

I'll send you a DM, I want to check out your work.

Sci-fi … I am not a super wide read person. I have a form of typographia often misdiagnosed as dyslexia, i read very slowly. I have to fully process everything I read - so like reading aloud is bad.

Anywho, I say that as I will most likely miss attribute it…

It’s a sci-fi - so far it’s “realistic” so pure not fantasy-sci-fi - Asimov? -ish kinda. It’s so far a fast read but, I need to slow down as there is a lot of establishment quickly.

I am a fantasy and dystopian (that tend to lean fantasy) guy so I am out of my element. Trek (grounded) more than Wars (mystic the force) so far

Have you tried reading on a yellow background? If you have an e-reader that may help. My buddy is a SPED teacher for his dyslexic students, if he prints homework on yellow paper, they are able to read it for some reason.

The genre is Hard Scifi, pretty grounded, no space aliens or super-powers, or anything like that.
