I haven't done a complete rig update in years. Now I'm just rotating parts. Change GPU every 2 years, change CPU when it really is an upgrade on a GPU off year, and switch some other minor pieces here and there whenever I get in the mood. Haven't changed case in a while, but quite happy with my O11D. Might grab some Lian Li fans later this year, I'll see.
I needed a 3rd 8pin connector for the 3080 though, so I kinda said the hell with it and ordered some cablemods. The sleeved cables I'm using right now are white and not really a good fit for my rig anyway so it's an excuse to replace them.

There kinda is no reason to let your rig get so outdated you need a complete system change.
That's the goal, but it seems every time I go to look at a piece-meal upgrade it would require a new motherboard, which requires different RAM or CPU. There were too many incompatible parts. :(

Yeah the cpu upgrades usually comes with at least a mb upgrade. As for RAM ddr4 has lasted long enough not to need to buy new sticks every time.
Next upgrade cycle will definitely need ddr5 though.

It sure does not cost as much to upgrade cpu/mb every 3 to 4 years compared to gpus every 2 years.

Well, it's turning into GPUs every 4 years and CPUs every 4-8 years. GPUs aren't having actual annual refreshes that matter as much anymore.

I think more adequate is about 3-4 yrs on CPU. But then again it all depend on what you are playing too. If you play the bleeding edge graphical shit on 1440 or more than youre gonna upgrade a lot sooner than every 4-8 yrs. I gave my kid my old i5 9600K setup, he plugged a 3060 ti in it and is more than happy with it at 2K but he only plays shit like terraria and some other obscure steam shit on it. Most of his"real" gaming happens on xbox x.

Personally if I see a game that I want to play and my system no longer supports it at the levels I like to play at Ill upgrade. For instance BF5 made me upgrade to that i5 9600K when my old i5 was stuttering the game hardcore. The system I have now was just more of a want than anything special I was playing at the time.

Get the hardware to match your screens. Unless you're trying for 4K120 or higher you can hit your hardware goals now at 1080/1440.

Nothing wrong with the system, but sometimes I think about the $4k I spent on the whole machine after all was said and done and it's a bit stupid I spent so much.
Expensive, but when you factor overall cost to use computers are probably one of the cheapest sources of entertainment there is.

Truth. I splurged during the rona for my setup when I usually build midrange and it's worth every penny for the OLED and glorious 4k gaming.

I built a system in 2011-2012ish for Guild Wars 2 with an i5 3570k. Fucker lasted me until I did a total rebuild in 2021. Sure, I updated the video card here and there through the years, but it wasn't until 2020-2021ish, when I had more time to game, that I started to notice it struggle a bit, finally. And it was only in CPU heavy games - shit like Civ 6, Total War, Stellaris, etc.

Honestly, if I had a 2080 or something even remotely decent in it (I had been using a 1060 for 3 years, until finally grabbing a 1660S), I probably could've limped along for another 2-3 years still.

One of my work PCs has a 4790 and a 970 in it and its held up to a lot of demanding shit over the past decade. 99% of shit is playable and looks at least "okay" in 60 fps graphical fidelity. The only reason I get annoyed with it now is because I have a last gen Nvidia PC near it and it points out just how slow that 970 PC is when loading shit.

Point being, I think the 9x0 and the 10x0 series cards were fantastic. I hear a lot of great reviews about those two generations years later and have heard jack shit about the 7x0 series or earlier.

Is 4 years a long time though?

The Intel 9900 was a late 2018 CPU, and the 10900 and 11900 were not actual upgrades to it. It took 4 years to get a meaningful upgrade in the 12900. And if you're gaming above 1080p, you're usually being held back by your GPU anyhow. Going through 2 videos cards on a mainboard/cpu upgrade is pretty normal.

Yeah it really depends on what upgrades you're talking about. I went from 4770k to 9700k to 12700k and saw big performance differences each time. I think the 9700k was kind an ill-conceived chip.

I'm extremely satisfied with my 12700K for the price (less so on the Gigabyte motherboard I got for it.)

There was some good deals for 12600s during the spring but 12700 level was limited to microcenter coupons. You'll need at least 8xxx for Windows 11 by 2025 when they put Win10 out to pasture. God forbid if you're still on 4770 or 6700 chips your EVGA 1080 GPU would definitely see some boosts paired with a modern chip.

I had the same build myself from 2012 to 2020. I only ever upgraded the GPU from 680gtx to a 1070gtx. But when the 3080 came out I decided to upgrade the whole thing. Got a 5900x cpu in the build with the 3080 and a P500a case and I'm really happy. I hope this bastard last half as long at least as the 3570k did.

Also to add, selling the old stuff financed a fair bit of the new computer.

Yeah, 5900x and a 6700XT for me - wish I had waited a bit on the video card so I could've swiped a 6900XT for what I paid for the 6700 early on, but oh well.

I'm happy with it, most games are 100+ FPS at 1440p/max settings and like you said, if it lasts even half as long as the 3570k, my pickle will be tickled.

Thats the proc I had that was stuttering like crazy in BF5. I would get decent frames from my 1070 but every 30 seconds it would just freeze for like a second. It was unbearable. Got the 9600K and it really opened up that 1070. Was getting like 70-80 FPS in BF5 with no stutters at all.

I built it back last October and was about that price. The PCpartpicker for it now shows $3000 without RAM listed so probably $3200 or so, and that's what I have it listed for. Granted, that's not a deal considering you could go buy the whole thing new for that. It's that price now because everything is coming down in price, and many parts are discounted. I didn't need it, but it was neat having it. I was on a 1080Ti with 1700 first-gen Ryzen CPU, so not everything was bad and was acceptable for the games I was playing.

I don't have remorse over the timing of when I bought a PC, but the amount I ended up spending on it to get full RGB. It's got the Lian-Li Strimers, and all Corsair QL fans, etc. I'll drop it $2800 and see what happens.

Listed at $3k , +250 for the retail I paid for the 3080ti , +210 for the RAM, +80 for Strimers, +200 on the CPU for what I paid
