I was hoping to hold out for 6 series or whatever and has. If I panic jump, not sure what I should look at from my 3080, is like a 4070/80 ti even a thing you can still get, will a 5080 melt, not thrilled with just 16gb but better than my 3080 10.

Everything takes memory nowdays from the coffee maker onwards. Memory makes are going to pivot to whatever pays the most. But for the low low cost of whatever $$ per month you can lease computer time.

When the 6090 comes out at an 8000 price point imma feel like a king for swinging the steal that is the 5090 when it first came out.
It's worse than when retard bought his 1200watt psu and we mocked him until 5090 arrived.

Tonight was 3 hours of agony. Deciding if I wanted to drop 1100 or so. Come to find out the provantage sites asus prime for 1015 on sale was a special order with the nice small text that yes they may jack price up and confirm if you still want it. FUCKKK you.

Spend some time agonizing over card makers, kinda leaning asus evil as they are for their fancier thermal pad thing for longevity *maybe*. Get locked in on a zotach oc white or a prime for 1250. Prime turns out to be 3rd party seller w/ 6 reviews. The zotach I think was plastic like msi, power locked, and something else that made me leary. And ugly all white in my black case. Find a TUF for $50 more on bestbuy. In checkout, trying to get it to my area code and should be little cheaper tax than where it wanted to send it... poof deleted out of my cart.

Finally broke down, found a Tuf direct from asus for 1350. So after tax etc like $200 more than I was reluctantly going to spend already. But I'm not optimistic of horizon cards given current shit fuckery has so many layers of fuckery to it and lots of unknowns with the AI craze, I dont see it as being a short lived disruption as some other components were one year or another.

Just wonder when the delta will be to sell my 3080, 2 weeks, 3 months, a year? Hell might become priceless and I should hold onto it.

I would hold on to your 3080 in my opinion. I was glad I held onto my 3080ti when I had to RMA my 4090. Took almost three months to get a replacement from Gigabyte.

Funny your rma was gigabyte, same brand as my 3080 that's been janky. (LCD screen software doesn't work, search shows it's been an issue for years, and then the other hinkyness)

I would definitely get a 9070XT rather than nVidia. My 9070XT was same price as my 3080 and that was two cards ago, You can still get them at Best Buy or Amazon for pretty cheap. Fuck nVidia.

I use a 5070ti. I have a 5060 and 5060ti that were barely used. Also a 3060ti. I should get motivated to unload them just like the memory I have. I thought I would keep one in case my card goes tits up. I've never sold anything on ebay and facebook marketplace really doesn't exist here.

If you're looking at Linux gaming the 9070xt has on par if not better performance via proton under Linux then it does under windows. Valve develops proton and optimizes it with AMD and their open source video driver, so it will typically perform much better then Nvidia.

I'm in month two of my CachyOS experiment, and I don't think I'll go back to windows. Everything works well enough at this point and I don't play anything requiring anticheat. Having everything optimized to your hardware and with just Linux having a better optimized scheduler make big difference to how responsive everything feels. It's just so snappy.

Still enjoying my 5070ti, but it's not like I really push hardware hard, OC'ing just feels like burning money, the benefits don't really seem all that great.

Was gonna buy another 64gb Ram kit but.. fuck LLMs.

I have a 1080 and a 3080 that have been sitting around collecting dust for years. Both are in perfect working order.

What are your collective opinions on their value?

Tons of chatter that AMD and Nvidia are raising prices on their cards to counteract rising RAM costs. (Reminder that neither AMD nor Nvidia make their own chips nowadays.) Possibly as early as start of business Monday, but definitely during their product lineup press releases during CES next week. Their CES dog and pony shows are supposedly all focused on Robotics, because there sure as hell aren't any products for consumers, aside from good yield 9850X3Ds.

Considering how cheap 1440+ monitors / 4K TVs are, I just cannot recommend a card with less than 16GB VRAM.

On the 'low' end, this means the only option is the 16GB version of the AMD 9060XT for $350 (for this weekend, anyway). If that's beyond your budget, get a console.

On the high end, that's the $600 AMD 9070XT or the $750+ Nvidia 5070Ti or better.

Personally, I now lean towards the AMD 9070XT. Not only are we now dealing with 1 year old products, and thus spending extra to future proof isn't a concept anymore, AMD doesn't require 12VHPWR cables. When a cable / board spec are running with such little safety margin / monitoring that power monitoring doohickeys are now a valid consumer product, Nvidia needs a complete redesign. (Watch the timestamped bit for why even properly seated cables aren't good enough with that spec.)

Otherwise, you're going to have to roll the dice with what you have until CES 2027 (and hope the memory market has stabilized, and that any new specs have their kinks worked out this time.) The future sucks.

Ill stick with 1440p. Currently on a 7800x3d and 6800xt I built mid to late 2023.

No point in buying older hardware as a "futurepoof". A 9070xt would be nice, but just not required for what I play(or anything I can see in the future I plan to play). So I will just roll the dice and hope it all crashes or at least goes back to normal. And pray PC gaming doesn't become a luxury hobby for only the top.

I think RAM will wind down after awhile, I know that the big problem Samsung has right now is just "space" they can't expand without more building space, and that takes a lot of time/resources to get rolling.

Well yes, all the existing capacity is already accounted for. (And then some, the core issue being that AI orders will account for another 40% of what was already effectively maxed capacity.)

The (terrifying?) thing being that none of the big three manufacturers have decided that demand at 140% of capacity warrants building _new_ capacity, implying they think those AI orders are a one time thing not worth building additional capacity for, if they even are completely fulfilled. (The most generous interpretation is that they think any further orders will be on future tech generations.) That not even the people building the actual components for 'AI' think 'AI' will be an ongoing concern should scare the hell out of anyone invested in companies / funds investing in 'AI' - you know, basically all of them.

They can't build additional capacity the biggest issue is the amount of time it takes to make the Litho machines, the biggest problem being the Lenses/Prism that are produced by Corning have a very high failure rate during production, and Corning is the only company right now with the abilities to produce them, correctly.

I'm waiting for it too pop, its coming and I'm gonna laugh my ass off when it does.
