they have a point on the Palworld thing.
Except they really don't. Pokemon has such a generic and indistinct art style that it doesn't take much for a creature to "look like a Pokemon" and when your game has 187 of them some of them are invariably going to end up looking a lot like one of the ONE THOUSAND AND TWENTY FIVE Pokemon. The gameplay is nothing like Pokemon, it's actually quite similar to Ark: Survival.

You can't patent game rules and mechanics - adding 'on a computer' shouldn't make any difference. That's one thing going for US patent law I guess.

I'll agree that changing that is stupid, and will end up in disaster when no-one can make anything without getting 300 separate licenses from EA-Disney corp. So this ruling is a clear win.

On the other hand, it does feel like Palworld guys should be guilty of *something*.
but you can lawfare all of some one's money away trying!

i think a lot of the pokeyman creature asthetic is just generic anime/manga art creatures. i bet if i opened up some pictures from random cutesie style anime, they would all be loaded with shit you could mistake for pokeyman, or palworld animals.

Oh I agree! I'll use Chuck Taylor's sneakers. New Balance made their own CT sneaker. It was a blatant ripoff (It was better IMO)...But WTF you going to do? It's a sneaker?

LOL! Agree. This shit is so...blatant that as much as a can't stand Nintendo suing God himself, they have a point on the Palworld thing.
nah. as others have noted. remember its not even the art design that is in question. its "capture" mechanics. etc.

and Nintendo has no legs to stand on.

look at this.
DragonQuest is FULL of creatures that could fit right into Pokemon.
platypunk dragonquest 4. 1990.

Know what series ALSO has you capturing/befriending monsters?

Dragonquest 5 1992

Dragon Quest V uses basic role-playing video game mechanics seen in the rest of the series, which includes leveling up by gaining experience points through battle, first person turn-based battles, and equipping weapons and armor. Something new to the Dragon Quest series is the ability to tame monsters into the player's party. The monsters can be used in battle and level-up like the human characters. Monsters sometimes request to join the Hero after battles if the party is strong enough.

Pokemon came out in 1996

The real innovations for Pokemon were actually the linking of gameboys and trading with other players.

I had zero idea about the capture mechanic in Palworld (Pokeman isn't my thing). I looked at the launch vid and thought Pokeman...with guns. They were suing over the MECHANIC?

yeah. i mean it was "24" claims. but basically was things like, "capturing creatures in a ball in a video game". That is the shit they were trying to claim copyright on.
