So I leveled a hc witch to about 56. My build so far has been searing touch with fireball/chance to ignite/elemental proliferation. For low levels it was very good because of the way that fireball damage increases early on (the +2 fire gems and increased burning damage on The Searing touch is all you need for dps at lower levels). I've taken almost exclusively life/resist nodes and have been using minions for survivability. However, at this level I'm finding my dps to be very lacking. To further complicate things, not having armor makes me very squishy against archers and fast moving melee mobs so I can't respec to take any dps nodes as it is.
I've decided to respec to a dual totem build (the going is slow...), similar to dominion's (
http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/vie.../gender/page/1) The major difference is that mine will be based on elemental equilibrium. I'm going to have a spork totem, an ice spear totem, and a fire trap skill (which will be in my searing touch, benefiting from the +2 to fire skills, supported by chance to ignite and elem prolif). All three of these damage sources will be supported by the corresponding penetration gem, so even if they hit twice in a row the +25% resistance will be penetrated. Additionally, I'm going dual curse and will probably do elem weakness/flammability for dps and temp chains/enfeeble for harder mobs. The fire traps will be laid next to the totems and do insane damage because of the 70% increased burning damage from the searing touch and because the fire trap's initial explosion (very high damage) will cause the burning status ailment which *stacks* with the floor burning damage. The status ailment will be proliferated to nearby mobs.
I'm assuming that the -50% resistances can make mob resistance negative. With elem weakness and the -50% buff, that would be 100% *more* (multiplicative) spell damage (and 150% for fire if I double curse with flammability) so damage could conceivably rival or even beat a dual spork build (which gets more shocked status ailments up).
Of course, this all sounds good in theory but we'll see if i'll survive long enough to try it and, if so, whether it works. If you like the idea and want to hear how it goes, you can support the cause by tossing me some regrets because I'm going to need like 15 more now and then another 15 or so when I respec from life to CI.
If I could start over, I would do this as a marauder:

Essentially the same build sans the curse nodes. You'd need a doedre's damning and curses would expire which would be a major annoyance, but the survivability would be much greater with all that armor. Unfortunately, I have a feeling this build might not be viable until hitting all those far-reaching mana/mana regen nodes (ie, like level 89) which begs the question of "if you've made it that far, why change builds?".
