its wild to think about how true this is. i played ark survival ascended when it came out till...the end of the center. it was obnoxious to have to log in to make sure things didn't decay. i couldn't fathom why they didn't just put a sub in to maintain your stuff. the players would vomit and shit if you mentioned a subscription, but if they put out a pack that gave access to a new dinosaur or cosmetic you'd see loads of people using it (and i'd wager they spent a lot more on those things).the concept of paying a sub is purely anathema to the survival/crafter genre which, I get it, I guess.
I'm optimistic if they have a system of "maintain the sub maintain the base forever". especially if one dude can run a base and all his RL homies can stash stuff there when they quit.
the new dune mmo was "pay once" mmo, but you have to log in to shuffle batteries. you can't really 'quit' and maintain all your stuff when you want to play again. you can bank vitals but your base and all the materials in it will rot.
it makes 'returning players' really think twice before trying again.
