Not sure i agree. I ran a CC wizzy that used weapons when shit was CC-ed so he had strength. My Arcane Trickster had STR and was a melee backstabber, trapper, CC wizard. My Trapper wizzy had to have dex for traps and used a bow. ( these are all toons on DDO and/or Nwn2 ). Also, the simpler stat thing kinda falls over when you think about multi-classing. Of course this game does not have that but that is where D&D 3.5 gets fun... for me anyway.
It blows my mind that people actually played NWN2. It was quite possibly the worst "mainstream/decent budget" RPG I've played in my life - the graphics looked 5 years out of date, the gameplay was clunky as hell and the storyline was... well honestly it was so awkward to play and ugly to look at that I never found out, beyond that the start was typical RPG fare. I think the gameplay and graphics were both actually worse than the first game, which at least had a decent MP/modding community.

Somewhat disagree. Nwn2 is the best 3.5 game there is in my opinion ( there are not many ) and the graphics are damn good with mods. However to get anything out of it you have to have mods and a beast machine because it runs like SHIT. It is very CPU bound and most people couldn't get over the clunky whack camera controls... it was stupid. With expansions and complete support for multiclassing level 1-30, you have quite a sandbox there and i have played the hell out of it although I thought the storyline was average to maybe slightly above average for first Xpac.

One thing though, i liked the beginning of NwN2 better than PoE.

POE as it is today graphics wise looks worse than nwn2 did with mods imo. Lack of real shadows kinda kills it for me a bit from a graphics perspective but at least the damn thing runs on many-a-machine... nwn2 takes major horsepower from a CPU perspective.

About to finally get around to starting this. Any recommendations for a good/fun starting class? Was thinking either monk, cipher, or chanter.
Cipher is really really strong, I would suggest that of the 3. Enchanter is good but I wouldn't main it. Haven't tried monk.

The original campaign in nwn2 is garbage
Wulverheim at Neverwinter 2 Nexus - mods and community

Stuff like this and Kaedrins Prc pack made that game infinite and amazing. They never did fix the shit camera.
Never used either of those, though heard of Kaedrin's PRC. Is Wulverheim worth firing up now?

The original campaign for NWN2 was horrible, but I remember Mask of the betrayer somewhat fondly (after I modded to slow down the decay shit).

I can tell you white plume mountain is great. its 1-20 i think. Path of Evil is supposed to rock and is 1-20. and there is also the Baldurs Gate I mod which i played and is great, also IceWind Dale.

I had dled most of the modules nwn vault had before ign Destroyed it. When i get home i will run down my faves.

The pools of radiance one is top notch off the top of my head. Path of evil was real buggy.

If you enjoy sandbox i would 100% reccomend wulverheim. The only major module i never played was the conan ones.

I will try that for sure. Thanks I have been itching to re-run some nwn2 stuff especially after playing PoE.

The third expansion for NWN2 did a great deal to improve the game. The map based campaign was actually a lot of fun to play and, as stated, modules that used those tools were really good. The thing that crippled that game was the performance issues (at least until I7s hit the market) and the camera. The camera issues never got fixed.

All the models were horrid, great mods out there to fix.
Dwarf and some humans were ok. The Prc pack had some good looking orcs. But i never found a pack that had a really good elf model. Especially female. I had an elf hexblade build i liked to use In my party..but she was a freaking uggo. WU-like in appearance

I think the mod was beautiful faces or something that yielded the elf pic above in my post i edited.

Post got eaten..lets try this again, and let this be my last derail.

Good modules for NWN2:

A hunt through the dark (nwn1 module remake)
Pools of Radiance
Serene
Risen hero
Tears of Ilmarid (did not finish)
The maimed god saga (has one impossible to find trigger to continue the quest, but good)
Legacy of the dragon
Tragedy in Tragidor
Subtlety of Thay
Red Hand of Doom
Keep on the Borderlands, naturally
Endless Depths, a good procedurally generated dungeon
Harp and Chrysanthemum
Sheep and Stone series
Misery Stone (i think this is a ravenloft one)
Path of evil (buggy)
Halls of Hamhock
Legacy of the White Plumed Mountain.

I have played a ton more but running through my campaigns and modules folder these are the ones i seem to have liked. That game has near infinite play if you were really nuts about D&D 3.5, which I kinda am.

Well this thread didn't really make me want to play Pillars of Eternity, but I'm going to play around with NWN2 and some of mods/modules now.

Never played it so now I'm research the prestige classes etc...I used to be big on the D&D world, I guess I let all that slip. Back to researching.

Anyone name a good community with tips other than just mods?

I am about halfway I think through NWN2 IWD campaign, lvl 10 atm with my party of 4. Pretty fun, though the early going was really problematic for me and the companion AI is horrible.
