We currently produce 100% of our caloric needs as a species using methods that intentionally murder billions of animals using virtually 100% of our good arable land, with lots of that coming from the 3rd world clear cutting rainforests and driving species to extinction, we just dont like to think about it. You give your 50 bucks to Greenpeace and you buy your faggot ass organic tomatoes from whole foods and think you are making a difference.

For a hivemind that specifically said they cannot intentionally cause harm and would not swat a mosquito that was biting them, they cannot use any of our modern methods for large scale industrial farming. Remove 25% of the world's calories from animal and animal by products and derivatives off the rip. Remove another 50% of the world's calories as loss due to insects and vermin.

Even if their programming would allow them to burn down the Amazon to make room for more farm land there still isn't enough of it left.

This is basic math and not up for debate. If you reduce humanities food output by over 75% then congrats 75% of the planet starves to death within a few weeks, and from there its just a failure cascade. I haven't even gotten in to the issues like where fertilizer comes from for most of the world, that shits gone too. Reality is without the ability to do harm or kill and eat animals 90-95% of calories are gone. We'd turn into inventors eating mud cookies and picking wild fruit off trees.

We don't have months or years worth of food stored anywhere. This isnt the 50s where we've got food tucked away for the winter, this is global commerce with just in time logistics. Look at how much of Africa and the middle east starved to death due to famine when Ukrainian wheat couldnt leave the black Sea at the start of the war. 6 week delay until they guaranteed Ukrainian grain resulted in famine.

This all assumes that all life in the universe is governed by nucleotide RNA sequences (which there are strong arguments for that I won't shit up the thread with) and they can locate another life bearing world (which we are getting pretty close to that in the modern world). But if we want to treat this as completely grounded in science, the food logistics problem is real. Even a hiccup in supply will result in a ton of starvation, so they are likely going to do some sort of big draw down to whatever they need to physically build Hive Radio 2.0 and sustain themselves. That is unless they really just want to send a "come pick up resources" signal back home, which seems more likely.

Also bear in mind that any transmitter would likely have to be in orbit with something resembling a geostatic rotation. It makes no sense to try and overcome the atmospheric and magnetospheric interference, for one. And if you put the thing on the surface even with sufficient power, you won't get a signal out to a target except for the millisecond window where your planetary rotation aligns with the target especially given the fact that the target itself is moving in an orbit of its own constantly. If you are talking something omnidirectional with the kind of range they are talking about, then we are into post Star Trek power sources and transmitter materials made of unobtainium that don't immediately melt the moment you pump that much power through them. And you are also still talking a space based transmitter because trying to sent a signal through the planet core is not going to fly and pushing one out of that intensity will potentially fry life in the general vicinity and certainly knock a nice big hole in the planetary magnetic field. Remember they specifically used radio, probably because its a signal less advanced civilizations would have access and monitor. Especially the kind of retarded civilizations that recreate alien RNA sequences from outer space in relatively unsecure labs near major population centers instead of an Antarctic base they can nuke if anything goes sideways, which is probably the most scientific plausible thing about the show (our stupidity).

So yeah, don't try to treat this show like it is hard science based. Its a psych study of an angry suburban Karen box muncher with a sci-fi backdrop. On that basis, its actually pretty good.

As long as you have access to water, you can live quite a while on 0 calories. The human body has adapted amazingly to caloric restriction precisely because of our biological past and calories being hard to come by.

No starvation takes longer. But the complete dietary shift for those eating healthy food (even us fatties) and process corn suryp is a system shock. This is especially true if you are being physically active in the fasting time frame, like say reconfiguring your entire food infrastructure to pure vegan. Its also an interesting question of how the hive mind handles the mental survival instincts of starvation and if it overrules the hive on an individual level.

And there would absolutely be some catastrophic effects on fat asses like myself if you were not able to drink tons of water and have some source of certain vitamins. Unless you are a rail thin person, the body chemistry induced organ failures will fuck you up long before the absence of calories.
