I pirated this tonight expecting trash but it was better than I expected. A Yautja actually hunting a target the whole time. Not saying it's the best pred but it's better than the dog shit AVP movies, at least.

Good because starting at an early point in the war gave them a lot of storytelling freedom to develop new scenarios and flesh things out, so to speak. Like it would have been cool to see a sequel where they reverse-engineer the new plasma weapons that the machines have started using, and so forth. TS was supposed to begin a trilogy and I assume the other two would have led up to the 2029 defeat of Skynet. It didn't do well enough to get any sequels greenlit though. So we're left with this solo movie that's kind of a curiosity more than anything else, someone's imagining of the early Future War and what it might have looked like.

Also, Anton Yelchin plays an amazing young Kyle Reese. Like he absolutely captures all of Michael Biehn's facial ticks, mannerisms, everything. He's probably the highlight of the whole movie.

That's a good analysis of the Terminator Salvation situation, yeah.

I also think the ending they had originally planned would have made it more memorable, but they chickened out after some early audience reactions.

In the released version, John Connor receives a mortal wound near his heart and they manage to save him by doing a heart transplant with Marcus' cyborg super-heart, making it so John Connor lives only thanks to a machine which is a bit ironic.

The initial idea was that Connor would actually die from his wounds, but only very few would know about it (his wife and a select few high ranking resistance members), and they transplated his face onto Marcus so that the symbol of John Connor would live on for the resistance, ironically a machine leading the resistance against Skynet.

I think both ideas work in the end, but a "bad ending" would have been more memorable.

Now if this was just another action movie it's not bad, cliche storyline follows the usual beats you would expect, visually it's pretty cool and the world monsters and clankers are all fun enough but this isn't a predator movie at all.

It isn't even good as a sci fi. Grinning idiot always happy android completely peeled off any sense of danger the movie tried to present. Cute little scary monster pal they had made it a whole lot worse. They should have put in a scene of them eating cotton candy because there was no more danger here than a theme park.

And for fuck sakes. They had the droid translate alien language but still spoke English to it? WHAT ABOUT THE AUDIENCE. Droid's lower half going on an ass-kicking spree was peak head in hands.

I can't wait for the inevitable Predator/Star Wars mashup, where we get a predator with MIDICLORIANS who squares off against Yoda Fett. They Was Light Sabe Fighting! OMG!

Yeah and all her stupid one liners. God I wanted to throw a brick at my TV every time she opened her mouth. Which was constantly.

Given the intended demographic for this film, they probably figured the audience didn’t want to read subtitles the entire film

It can also be a creative choice - like in Shogun they’re speaking in English, but the English is just a stand in for Portuguese
