Really good interview too actually. Glad I was wrong about the author, though despite him saying no politics, there still was certainly those 2 lines I quibled about. Granted the 2nd one Stratt was upset about, but he had main character lapping it up.
The worst part about the interview was him going " suchandsuch class of 1990" Dammit I graduated in 1989 and he looks way older than I do, I think, gray hair adding to that: I would have thought he was 10 years older than his derived age. Andy Weir is a true science nerd/Computer science guy, and I think his character(s) are supposed to be more akin to Indiana Jones than Sciencey Gary Sue: Scientists in tough spots who use their skills and minds to reason and "science!" their way out things. We Gen X'ers would have said "MacGyver!ing" his way out.

Loved hearing him talk about his writing process and how he reasoned several of the plot points into the book.

Haven't seen the movie yet but read the book in a single sitting. Very much like The Martian, and as he mentions in the interview, I could tell deliberate choices were made to make those protagonists different.

It was a great interview and they could have gone on for hours, Andy obviously being a fan of the Drinker as he used his catchphrases and stepped on his Outro.

Super great watch and I heartily recommend it to anyone with an interest in A) the movie B) Andy Weir's work C) writing and writers' process overall.

Saw this movie, really good. Not often I get to say that about a movie now adays. Just a nice little optimistic movie with some humor and feels. There were differences from the book, but I felt all of them treated the source material with respect given the more limited format.

The guy who has made the most compelling modern Sci Fi versus the guy who made GayTrek

Andy Weir is not versed in how to deal with liberals 101—don’t apologize to them

This was just a really fun movie.

Flaws? Yes.

Not big enough to take away from how much I enjoyed it.

5/5

Wanted to take the wife to see this for our anniversary this Sunday. Life got in the way but , found a good screener (with subtitles even) so it's not all lost.

huh you're right syncup released a DCP webrip, they apparently have sourced a Mario DCP as well so that will be out in the next day or two

this won't be out on VOD until early May (5th or 12th) so the current webrip isn't a bad idea if you aren't gonna see this in theaters

I guess I didn't post a review - as someone very familiar with the book, I liked it but didn't love it. 8/10

Now, as a techie, it's not too surprising I would prefer the more hard science of The Martian over this. And much like The Martian, it is clear that more of the book was filmed but cut out in editing - there's a one second shot of a xenonite sandwich, implying the movie at least summarized that testing; Grace mentioned that he used Rocky's breeder tanks, without the final cut establishing what they are, when movie Rocky would have made them, or why; the Beatle probes get deployed, with a Beatles' needle drop, without going into why (or possibly even if) they are Beatles related; etc.

In its defense, none of the Hail Mary screenplay adjustments pissed me off as much as The Martian's script inventing gravitational assists during the mission - in reality, Voyager 2, launched in the goddamn 70s, did _two_ flybys of Venus before it then did flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus to adjust its course to each of the next planets on its itinerary.

It's also interesting that both of Goddard's scripts added scenes once things get back to Earth. And I don't entirely hate all the Hail Mary script changes, either - of course (given that Grace doesn't think he'll see Rocky again at that point), both he and the audience would want to see Rocky's ship, even if budget issues make that visit very limited.

So all-in-all, I liked it but didn't love it; if you liked the movie, you might want to give the book a shot; given how rare it is nowadays, it is great to see big budget sci-fi on the screen again, even if I'm not sure anyone other than Villenueve, Nolan, or Lord & Miller have the pull to get that level of financing anymore.

There are a few instances of hardcoded Russian subs that translate things like writing on instruments or whiteboards, signs. Nothing major. Everything else is perfect.

Yep we just finished watching it. DVD quality at least. I'll grab the blu-ray or 4K rip when it comes out on VOD.
