What you're talking about is more commonly called Hard Sci Fi.

I would say the Martian is more hard sci fi than Project Hail Mary.

"Not a very good science fiction movie but a fun feel good movie." I never claimed it wasn't science fiction, I just said it wasn't very good science fiction.

I can add on, here's the story. Hey random guy that had an idea once, teach our astronauts that idea! Nevermind that people in the real world don't think that non carbon based life is impossible. Wait, your idea isn't relevant, they are carbon based. Oh no, the ship blew up! Looks like you, with no training and no relevance are our best option! Everyone dies in the space ship but him. Meets rock. Let's learn to communicate, because that's not a totally normal thing to attempt or whatever... and I'm awkward. Magical space communicating science happens! Maybe the only science fiction thing in the movie other than the particles. Etcetera. I liked the movie, it just happened to be in space instead of a uncontacted tribe on earth or something. That's fine. I wish they would have shown their essential differences more, both in belief and tech.

precisely. It could have been good science fiction, if they for example would have explained and explored the differences in tech trees etc. between humans and rocks. also should have explained why didn't the rock seem to have a computer analog or an AI to translate? how the hell would it even have discovered space and stars when they can't see them? how would they not realize there is immense amounts of cosmic radiation when performing even rudimentary space faring tests?

In many ways, the movie could be considered a trailer for the book. Or more accurately a highlight reel of the plot in the book. It skips all the explanations that the book goes into detail into and I wasn't surprised afterward when I saw people asking the same questions the book answers.

The book starts with the premise that Rocky's civilization never had a reason to consider going to space or any means to do it until the Astrophage, and then yeeted a big 3d printed ship into space using a propulsion tech based off the Astrophage. Then it worked backward to build the science around all of that. This is how pretty much all scifi works.

We could criticize the movie for not explaining certain things, but really, for every unanswered question or concept you think wasn't explained in the movie, others have found five. What in the movie do you cut to make room for it? Probably the cute interactions between Ryland and Rocky, right? But that's not the movie they were trying to make.

If they cut the buddy scenes to add more explanation, do you think it would increase or decrease their revenue?

It really is a little annoying. I don't think theres a single science question asked in this thread that wasnt directly addressed in the short, accessible book.

My wife and I enjoyed the movie. I understand that it would be difficult to convey all the science in a movie like this with just 3 hours to play. I also understand that the movie is Science "Fiction". Their science might not match ours. The premise was interesting. The story was even better.

I give it a solid 8.5/10.

I'm too lazy to look it up... but I wonder how rich folks got when E.T. used the Speak&Spell (?). Man, that movie was fucking excellent, and whatever they paid for those Ad placements had to have been the best investments those companies ever made.

The book goes into it more, but Rocky's species is basically if a Stromalite turned into a mech: The rocky parts of Rocky aren't alive, it's basically a shell that contains a colony of single cell organisms that are coordinated through crystal structures that essentially act as the brain/memory. When Rocky at the end says he can't forget, that is literal: they basically have hard written memory. That is in part why they never developed computers: they basically act like computers to a degree and they have the ability to do a limited "hive mind" thing where a large group can basically act as a super computer. I actually think it is realistic that based on biology and environment, 2 different intelligent races would come to completely different technologies over time.

As for radiation, there is a difference between knowing radiation exists and knowing what radiation does to living cells. They basically built a space elevator and constructed their ship in orbit and sent it on it's way, much like the Hail Mary. They were so close to the planet that the magneto sphere would have protected them to a degree.

On radiation: as I recall, it worked like this. Their planet had an extremely strong magnetic field that protected them completely from radiation. They never left the planets magnetic field until the trip to Tau.

Wait like that movie The Core? The center of the earth stopped spinning and they had to burrow into the earth and set off nuclear bombs to get it rotating again?
