Like most retcons, it's because they 1) ran out of ideas and 2) realized stuff sells (even) better with nostalgia.

The most loved Resident Evil games are all in Raccoon City except RE4 which even some purists consider too much of a departure (more action oriented, no "zombies", in Spain, etc..).

RE5 was already a lot less popular, RE6 is disliked by most, RE7 and RE8 are kind of their own thing (first person, new character, new gameplay, no "zombies").

Then you can either bring back Leon and Raccoon City and RE9 becomes the fastest-selling game of the franchise (over 7 million copies in under 2 months), or you can keep Raccoon City as a canonically radioactive wasteland.

Hmm, choices choices..

Or you could be smart enough to know nukes don't = uninhabitable like in old movies.

Trailer makes me think it could be a solid zombie flick but will have nothing to do with Resident Evil.

In the interview I saw with him it basically takes place during the outbreak in Racoon City but essentially away from all the Resident Evil story. So yes random zombie flick.

thats waht blows my mind.

This director is great. He makes great shit thats fairly original.

He could have made a zombie movie and it would be a hit, I dont get why shoe horn in the RE shit. Iget why studios want the name for sales, but he never seemed like the type to be a stooge for the jews

It was the co-op one with the black woman.

RE5 was basically the first mainstream example of sjws impacting game design. Game is set in Africa so the first trailer for it had a African zombies being gunned down which caused sjw retards to lose their shit and scream racism. Capcom panicked and threw in a black woman and made it co-op to appear the masses

I just don't understand why he needs to put the franchise tag on this, his movies get enough attention as-is. In fact, after Weapons you would think that he would want to see how many eyes he could get on an ORIGINAL take on zombies.

Yeah I wonder if it was just something with the studio execs and funding. Maybe the guy just really likes the games and wanted to do a resident evil movie. I can see that as a possibility. I don't know though. I've enjoyed both of his other films and it's nice to see somebody trying to make decent horror movies again along with a handful of other directors that I typically end up watching their stuff.

They haven't had many hits with the franchise and Movies/TV. They probably thought this guy could renew trust in the brand.

Constantin Film owns the live action Resident Evil license from Capcom, and while the contract has never been made public, it's widely believed to include some form of a "use it or lose it" clause, possibly requiring a new film roughly every five years to retain the rights.
So the reason this movie exists may simply be that Constantin needed to keep the franchise active and hired one of the most sought after horror directors in Hollywood right now.
Cregger may genuinely love the games, but this likely started with the studio needing another Resident Evil film.

Has my interest for sure. I liked everything except for perhaps the "it's raining zombies" portion. Everything else seemed standard zombie fun.
