I didn't like Weapons and I haven't seen any of Zach's other films.

There were some excellently crafted scenes utilizing top notch shot composition and camera work in this but the story is that of a farce/comedy. When it's doing something serious I was enjoying it and when it was being a comedy I loathed it. I expect to be in the minority on this one like I was with Weapons.

I am confused why the winter themed horror movie is not coming out during the winter nor Halloween either and instead partway through September.
I know Weapons apparently is a mixed bag, but honestly really enjoyed it. I am also happy to hear that this seems like it's much better than everybody is expecting.

Felt like critics wanted to give him a lot more of his just due on Barbarian-- and delivered the rest of his praise when Weapons was a hit. I think if he came out with Weapons first, the acclaim would have been more tempered.

The scope of the plot is very focused which I assume is why it works in a larger more complicated game series story.

here's az's take.

"not Resident evil"
"decent stand alone horror movie"
"overall just ehhhh.."
"should do very well at box office"
"normies will probably like it." "normies being those not invested in the IP. ' and with limited overall movie, experiance, etc.

seems to say it starts well, then gets weaker oveer time.

So general horror audiences will like it. And its good but grifter needs rage clicks, I am understanding the assignment.

Damn what a ding against the movie. Honestly I think Resident Evil lore is retarded, but I like the creatures, so i guess this will be a great watch for me this afternoon.

The only thing that I didn't like in this movie
CGI was iffy at times. If this was practical I'd have shit myself

so you didn't listen to the vid at all, and just called him a grifter. are you retarded?

Grifting at what? when you stay stupid shit like that, what do you think they are scamming over? you think big Nintendo is paying him to shit on Resident evil movies for some reason? if he likes something, you don't think he has any financial reason to just say so?

"Grifting" has got to be the most brain dead retarded accusation for anything.

lets take Disparu. Now, his videos are intentionally comedy. he only makes videos on things he can make fun of. he's not really a reviewer in that sense. But its also not grifting. as, again, he only makes videos for things he can mock. if its good, he just doesn't make a vid on it.

I don't have a lot of experience with the Resident Evil franchise (played 1 and 2, saw all the previous movies, straight to DVD stuff and animated ones) but I thought there was quite a lot of Resident Evil coded stuff in this. The first half not so much but once we're at Raccoon City we've got zombies, mutants, run and gun action, super science, etc. It closes on

a helicopter about to machine gun a tyrant looking thing.

The tone is off for Resident Evil with all the humor but given where that movie franchise ended up you should probably be happy with what you got with this one.

Dude, grifters are easy to figure out

He has 18.... EIGHTEEN videos about Super Girl in 4 months. All with crappy AI thumbnails.

Why do I need to listen to a retard like that? No I don't think Super Girl will be very good as I haven't even seen it. But holy shit there is neary a movie in existence that is interesting enough to make that many videos about it. SO what's he talking about? Culture war? Pass. Not interested in his takes at that point.

az does talk the comedy. its his main issue.
he says its "what if we took The Thing, and the blob, and turned it into a comedy" "for the most part, when the film is trying to be horror, the performances are very good", "the film devolves into a comedy"
"every bit of tension, horror is lost"

he even mentions test audiences responded poorly to the comedy, and this version is actually even cut down.

Resident evil is actually hard to make an adaptation with honestly. The GAMES tone are all over the place.
look at the most recent game which itself tried to blend the two major massively conflicting tones. with Leon chainsaw fighting on the back of a motorcycle with rocket launchers... and Grace actually playing a survival horror.

I sure has hell wouldn't want to try and capture Resident evil in movie form. its all over the place. Silent hill is way more coherent on that front. odd that one was also adapted so poorly recently.

Efap starting up talking about this. And immediately they bring up something often over looked.

Zach Creggar's name might be over everything... but the movie is co-written..

Shay Hatten.

famed writer of..
John wick 3, Army of the dead, Army of Theives, John wick 4, Rebel moon part 1, rebel moon part 2, Ballerina...

edit: yeah, they are also hammering on the "its a comedy". as their main point of contention. its a comedy, and its not funny.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, was a lot more of an exercise in showing someone basically playing through a zombie survival game than I expected. It wasn't very scary but with numerous jump scares. Caught an earlier showing to go w/ a friend and weren't many there. Might go again just to enjoy it with a larger crowd because that's part of what's fun w/ these types of movies for me, that collective experience, the 2-3 people/groups that are clearly having harder time than the rest with the jump scares, etc. Just like a good comedy.

listening to Efap talk about the movie, it REALLY sounds like this was originally a "Shawn of the dead" style parody of Resident evil, left 4 dead, and other zombie video games, and that they actually managed to get the IP license, so went back and added some easter eggs. but really the whole thing is just a parody of RE, ld4, etc. "just like a video game!" is just more of the parody.

He said his issue is the tonal change into a comedy in the second half and I disagree. It's not a shift, it's always had comedy elements. Zach's whole style is not taking the genre seriously a la Cabin in the Woods.

He also is suprirised how silly the final act is which is odd considering he said he liked weapons.

He can't seem to connect the established style of the directors past movies with this one.

Oh well I guess

People are aware they actually took a bunch of jokes out of the final cut, right?

It seems clear that a major inspiration for Cregger was trying to recreate the _feeling_ of playing through RE 1 and 2, and since those have translations so terrible everyone assumes they were jokes, he tried to emulate that as well with comedy bits - but the comedy in the earlier parts was far easier to edit out.

To be clear, I am not sure anyone is seriously arguing this isn't the best Resident Evil movie - I think people were just hoping for more given his recent productions.

As to the timing, maybe they just agreed to space out things between this, Other Mommy, and Clayface, so everyone had a couple of horror weekends to themselves, and/or they wanted a couple weeks separation from Street Fighter for the same "let's not split the returns" reasoning.
