This game is kicking my butt lately and I only even play on strive to survive. I have failed 3 or 4 runs now right around the time i'm getting to assault rifles, one or two of them even before that. I don't hard-cheese keeping my wealth down while researching my way to godly pawns vs raid values but I might have to at least start doing it some. Most recent run I had a colonist get incapped by a mad swan while wearing full flak etc., didn't even get a hit off on the swan, and then immediately got hit by a raid where 4 of my other 7 colonists got downed on the first volley and it was only like 5 raiders with mediocre guns, nothing crazy...

Did they change gun balance or something that youd want to use ARs? Early guns were wildly in favor of heavy SMG primarily because they were a lot easier for low shooting skill pawns to get hits at optimal range.

I play rimworld backwards. i stat with a few brute melee guys and plate+uranium mace them up. then beat down invaders and steal their guns. my tech level on guns is roughly equal to the guys who have attacked me recently.
i JUST researched assault rifles (my guys were getting too skilled to be using busted up SMG's).
this game i tried out hunter drones, and hunter packs. and they are pretty good! you can toss the hunter pack a crazy distance away and explode a crowd of savages.
my ship is almost "done"

actually i kinda want to sperg out about my army. the dye ran out so they arn't the right color anymore:
So these dudes are melee weapons. they wear plate, marine or locust armor. always shields. normally they have plate plate because i overuse melee and their armor gets beaten up a lot:
My boy ash is a child who grew up. he's a dirt mole and has no skills but ++ melee ++ ranged and ++ mining. so i replaced both his hands with power claws and he uses a legendary chain shotgun and carries a hunter pack and uses phoenix armor so he's just a brick:
psyker highmate. so she just buffs and hauls people away mid battle to patch them up:
the purple guys use flame throwers and shields. they make a wall of fire when the savages come. sapphire is ++ mining so she has two drills for arms. folks qualify for purple squad if they have shitty shooting skills and meh melee skills. they get a cybernetic weapon and a flame thrower:
Saucy teal fellows are high skill shooters. 2 are hussars. they use beam repeaters (stolen from...some where). and hunter packs:
rangers just have at least some interest in shooting and arn't horrible. they mostly have SMG's but some have glitter weapons or assault rifles if skilled. red is a genie so he stays way back. they all have foam poppers so that my wall of t hugs don't run around scared of being on fire.
non combatants. they just have dusters and nice clothes, foam poppers. any of them who can fight, carry a hellcat rifle so they can shoot fire and run if cornered. all the children have shields (stolen from pig men):

I don't understand what that room is supposed to be. It has 3 heaters, a geyser, and 12 AC units (coolers) blowing hot air into the room; it should be close to cooking people alive. Also, if one of the coolers is not working, I don't see which one.

So i wanted to do some science. i took this quest where i pr otect a dude, and in like 20 days a doom squad of meks comes to stomp on me. i flew to a tiny asteroid, put down an anchor, built a bit, then flew off. i thought maybe if i lured the meks to where my ship is i would then jet away and go back to the moon base and develop it...
what act ually happened is i landed on the ground, got the message. no meks. they all went to the space rock and then fought nobody. just hid in a nook. i'm not sure what to think about that. will the meks...always go to that rock now? is it because i was on the rock when the event decided it would occur soon? i may need to do more science.

Whats a good way to find the certs for research? Just go visit the merchant tribes? Trying to unlock cataphract armor but only have 1/2 certs.
Once I beat the Mech Hive I think I want to try a normal run and get the Gravship for raiding etc.
The mechs dont chase you then I assume if you do the other starting scenarios?

i want to say cataphract in particular, but also certs in general are more common from space trading exotic traders, or imperial traders. imperials will only trade with you or allow you in tehir towns if you have a knight + ranked person.
for clarity, you cannot go to an imperial town to trade unless you send your muffalo caravan there with the knight IN the caravan
