but it's silly b/c you have to apply so much thumb pressure, whereas the pliers can use actual leverage

Thanks. That'll be really useful when it's time to hang cameras. Keystone jacks are what really get me. I haven't been able to get the "toolless" ones to work. The only type that I've been able to successfully use are https://amzn.asia/d/00ktl0B2. The main problem with them however is if you don't trim the wires just right, the connection becomes spotty.

is ai tracking free or subscription? i am looking into cams with ai, but i hate subscriptions and cloud

Access control may be a fun tinker project down the road. I'll have ethernet there with the doorbell...

Also considering running some drops to to windows along with a low voltage run. We don't have any plans to do automatic shades right now but I can think of a couple of spots where it may be nice to have in the future.

I think both Reolink and Unifi include tracking without a subscription now.

I think for Unifi you have to buy an local AI key, but there is no subscription.

I decided to checkout my Internet plan after a few years. I had comcasts 1gig internet from sometime early COVID and paid some fee to have no data caps..

Then I see they now offer 2gig internet in my area and data caps are a legacy feature they got rid of with the new plans. Nice to know I've been paying to remove the cap for 6 years now. Fucking shithole company. Also this plan somehow costs less than the plan I was on... Saved money upgrading

Got a new modem to support 2.5Gbps internet, a UCG-Fiber router (up to 10gig support) and looking at either a ubiquiti managed switch or just some tp link unmanaged 2.5GB switches (I have the same 1GB switches now and they work great).

I already have unifi APs in the house, so going to a full unifi setup ecosystem kind of intrigues me, though I don't REALLY need a managed switch.

Good excuse to clean up the rats nest of cables I've created over the years at least.

Depending on how many ports you need the 2.5g flex is a great option. It can run on Poe if you have it. One less power cable to deal with.

Thanks I actually just saw that today and think it might be what I go with. I think I actually complicated my network way more before and now I'm going to cut down on the wires with this.

My provider (Frontier) doesn't force the use of their modem so I turned their EERO wireless router into an AP wireless device and my router provides all the connection, security, etc. It's pretty damn nice. The extra ports allow me to control internet access based on the port through OPNSense without needing a managed switch.

I did the same, saved 70 bucks a month. I had to create a second account and “move“ into my same address to get it. Was a nightmare where I was getting double billed for for months, but they finally refunded all the charges to the account that "moved out". They don't charge a lease fee anymore, so, I just ended up going with their modem, it's been just fine - you just have to be sure to turn off the xfinity wifi crap when you're setting it up.

Good to know though I still prefer my own modem. I don't trust them lol.

Got everything setup and it's so nice having unifi control everything. Before this I had a tp link router with broken wireless, unifi APs connected to it, to link 1gig switches all over my house..

Now just the ucg-fiber going to a couple APs and the one mini switch (also unifi). They make their UI so easy to use.

Best I can get since no fiber. Can't complain I suppose

Unifi is really great.

And its scale is always increasing.

What you have at home is what you would have at "work" - Learning unifi in a home lab can be like 500$ and you can learn almost every part of it in the same manner as the enterprise.

SMB? Unifi no question. in 2026, Enterprise? Yes, depending on some use cases, but when your "Enterprise" that is always the case - just because in 1997 some nerd core cisco guy built your core network and you never have changed anything from it and now in 2026 your like "Unifi sucks because it does not do this random old nonsense that we still have, no one knows what it is for, or what to do with it, or what is the modern equivalent, CISCO 4WIN!"

But like every product, there are places it fails and places is excels.

First day back only 1/4 the kids... Wed will be fun :) Not "Enterprise" in complexity, but we often are 1800-2000 clients daily.. so there is "Enterprise" in number. We are running a 5gig dedicated fiber, 2gig backup +5G backup. 85 APs 52 Switches etc.

Their OON implementation is also a delight to use. I went from not knowing anything to being able to add mildly complex rule sets in almost no time.

Lightning storm fried my modem and took out my router. Fried the WAN port, LAN still working, WiFi cooked. Needed a new one anyway.

Thinking Dream Router to replace it. Possibly Cloud Gateway Fiber, but Dream Router is in stock and driveable tomorrow.
