Shocked no thread, it's been talked about enough.

I figure by now costs and advancements ought to be where I can get something I'd like. Would like to avoid any high dollar service/subscriptions. On other hand it would be ideal to be able to get some kind of phone alert for specific area's of the view and/or be able to live view from my 2nd monitor when I'm home.

Biggest thing I've waited to avoid, I'm lothe to spend a fortune on an installer and I don't really have skills to be running wires through walls. Only really looking for exterior pointed at my gated driveway, possible another out towards my pool/animals. Mounting locations are my house, but I think I'd like at least one on the overhang of my big pole barn/shop would be idea for a straight on view of the driveway to catch plates hopefully. Wifi signal does come from far side of house, but I could possible put an extender on that side of the house or not sure if something running off cell signal or enough of a base station with it's own wifi network would be a thing.

Motivation is we've had the gate once in a rare while unchained or chained funny which we largely put down to ourselves, but todays odd chaining I'm nearly certain I did the usual way. Maybe amazon new driver started to open it to deliver to door and heard the 6 dogs inside going banana's and wimped out would be the simplest explanation, but I almost kinda suspect the 180lb retard kid down the street of coming over to the pool or petting animals, he had his Lenny moment months ago when we've never spoken to me before asking if his guest friend could pet the donkeys which seemed odd if he hadn't done such a thing before.

My current strategy on the camera front is that I have an existing camera set up (from a company called HiseeU, or something) with wifi enabled cameras that can also be PoE hard wired. I don't like the interface/DVR so I was looking for alternatives.

I have discovered, and am working on deploying, an open source package called Frigate. This runs in a docker container, acts as a DVR, and can access cameras through a few different protocols so long as they're network attached. In my case I'm going to start with RTSP. I found out there was a simple format to access the camera. SO I just have to plug those addresses into it and it can access the cameras. I used my home gateway/router to lock all the cameras into fixed IPs on the home network.

The thing that this opened by eyes to is that it's also an open protocol, and not authentication protected. So now I am looking into RTSP scanners I can put on a linux laptop to go check all the local wifi networks to see if there are any open cameras around. heh

But to your use case....

If the camera is house mounted is it a place where you could just easily run the power/network cord through the attic? Is not, is it on a side of your house where it gets sun? There are options for solar panels with battery backs which can power many cameras. SO then you get a wifi camera, and a solar panel/battery combo.

Example battery pack :

I'm about to test that one for my camera on my back fence watching the alley behind my house because I don't have power back there, but I know the cameras Wifi can reach so long as it gets power. (tested with an extension cord)

Wyze is cheap, and can do 24/7 if you add a microsd card to each camera. They sell an indoor window mount, so the only thing you need to do is plug it in. Easy setup, but likely sub-optimal positioning. For outside, they sell a lamp socket adapter, so just keep the porch light switch on (add these for either toggle or decora to prevent accidentally turning the light off), and from there they have many camera options, including a pan-and-scan option. I see now that they have a bulb camera. Solar and battery powered options too, and doorbell. You will need a subscription for 24/7 recording to local microSD and other features; $99 billed yearly for 99 cameras, or per camera, etc. They do have a limited desktop webview, but it isn't great. Their AI features (like pet/package/face recognition will lag behind Google Nest and Amazon Ring).

I have one pure Wyze setup and another with an 8-ch Reolink NVR and Ring doorbells. The NVR is simply better, but we did have to run the cat5e.

I also did Wyze. I have 5 on my house and 1 wireless (battery) one on my MIL's garage that covers her front yard and garage. They also sell a solar panel kit that can charge the battery. I didn't do that and we usually have to recharge it about once every other month ( I actually have 2 batteries and we swap them out). Wyze is cheap, you can use their monitoring if you just like to spend money or add a microSD card. The Southern Nevada Desert heat has not killed any of them and I've had these 5-6 years.

yea i do wyze as well, like other have said, it's a mixture of running cable, solar and lightbulb power, the cams are cheap
i'm exploring other cams that do free ai tracing, currently it's 10bucks/mo for ai for wyze
tapo seems to be the leader

also these cams are old, 1080p for like 200ish bucks i can replace the outer perimeter w/ 2k cams and comes w/ ai tracking

it's also a dual cam, 1 fixed wideangle and a robo pan/tilt telephoto, for 50bucks looks like a steal

tapo is tp-link so it's not a no brand, all my light switches are kasa (phased out tp-link but still works w/ the new tapo app)

I forgot to mention solar ideal, or can split a love from an outlet. I don't have good attic access nor do I really want to run anything up thru. Lord of rodents and recluses
