I agree. Phones are a commodity now, no real reason to get the latest and greatest. I still buy one generation old pixel phones just out of habit, but my Mom and brother both use $200 motorolas and looking at them it's honestly hard to make a case for why I'm paying $400 for a Pixel. The $1200 Iphone is completely indefensible aside from being a status symbol.

My last few phones were Samsung , used to get the Note line for the screen size , have a S22 Ultra now (for the camera). Any Android will have bloatware anymore , even the google pixel line. I prefer/am used to Samsung's UI but it can be considered bloat as well.

I'm old enough to remember when phones were exciting. People thought I was lying when I told them I had a phone with a camera. Then OMG 4G, now pfffft. it's all AI bullshit that I turn off. I see zero reason to upgrade.

Wife and I are currently rolling Samsung S20 FEs. I've had to have one cracked glass replaced (random drop which landed flat on the one pebble in a parking lot...) and while they did it I had the replace the battery. Both are still doing everything we could need our phones to do, and I honestly kinda like it being old enough that neither Samsung nor Google are pushing unwanted AI bullshit down onto them.

I just liked that phone because a part of me still longs for a tiny physical keyboard, because I'm old like that.

I wasn't wild about digital keyboards either, still hate typing on them. I got my MIL a S22FE and I was PISSED when I saw it had the exact same cameras as mine just slower with less powerful software. I knew the 30 - 100X zooms were digital but damn. Mine also has a stylus that I use once in a blue moon. I do like being able to use it to remote click the camera shutter but past that it's useless.

But really FUCK AI

My wife uses a phone for 5+ years. So last year she finally wanted to upgrade. I got a new Pixel and I got her the Samsung Z Fold. It's fucking awesome. My next phone will probably be one of these fold phones. I don't upgrade very often either though. So it will be a few years.

I fucking hate the fold phones. Lol
Just shows how tastes differ. I’d love a phone with a decent camera, web browser, and only Apps (like Discord, Map, etc.) that I install. No other bloat, like ad pushing, information collection (like from the map), etc.

We’ll never see that, though.

I haven't tried the folding phones, and for $1800 I probably won't anytime soon. They look neat though.

I've used a Galaxy flip for over a year now and I'm pretty happy with it. The main thing is it's much easier to carry and functions basically the same as other phones. Half the time i don't even bother to open it when checking messages or answering calls. One thing to be aware of is they absolutely require a good case. Any grit in the hinge is super annoying.

I didn't think I would either but having the option for essentially a normal sized phone and a tablet in device is fucking great. It's fantastic for playing games.

I've played around with a friends' Samsung fold and while it's nice, it did solidify my thoughts on folding phones. I don't want a normal phone that folds into a tablet, I want a normal phone that folds into something smaller. The Z Flip and Moto Razr fit the bill (though I'd rather not have an exterior screen), I just want a Pixel version.

For me, an small outer screen is made redundant by my watch. I'd much rather have it fold up into something where there is no screen facing outward.

ikr, if i was "forced" to only use the phone by flipping it open, id get it in a heartbeat, but you have a fully functioning front screen that does 99.9% of everything, and you only unfold to multitask or youtube.
