A “Spaceballs” sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to star, and will produce alongside Mel Brooks.

Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad, while Kevin Salter will executive produce. The project is in early stages, and plot details are being kept under wraps. Amazon declined to comment.

Writing duo Samit and Hernandez are best known for their work as screenwriters for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” “Addams Family 2,” and the upcoming Disney+/Lucasfilm special “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy.”

At this point, I honestly enjoy Spaceballs more than all the Star Wars movies other than Empire and the original.

Even I didn't bother with the animated series.

Considering how unloved modern Star Wars is vs the original trilogy, this seems like a hard sell, though it is nice they are giving 97 year old Mel Brooks one more thing to do in life.

Not sure how to feel about this. Haven't seen any of the works mentioned for the writers. The dude starring looks familiar in a side kick on some comedy movie way. And get the feeling brooks is just mentioned to get the name involved. Has he done anything in the last decade? Looking at imdb, looks almost all voice for so long.

This is something that is going to have to be handled with a lot of respect of the source material and to the fanbase. Even with the title, people will expect "The Search for More Money" and without the title, it will get panned right out of the gate. I do think Gad is a fanboy of the 80's in watching his COVD YouTube series where he did the reunions but if he doesn't lean heavily on fan service and locks into the Mel Brooks humor, it will flop. Spaceballs doesn't deserve a souless sequel.

I think this is the perfect era to release it if they do it right. Don’t water it down, lean into it heavily instead, and the current antiwoke political environment the crowds could eat it up. Word of mouth and trying to send a message could make it be big.
