It fit this version of the character. Jean and her sister get abandoned by their family, have to live in the streets and fend for themselves, sister gets captured/tortured/killed, and she is being hunted by shitty people. Seems like she acted fine lol.

Since she was already in New York I was surprised they didnt have her going upstate to the Xavier school or getting some kind of contract from Xaiver inviting her to the school as an end credit teaser.

The actress/casting didn't add anything positive to the story. Her writing and power level was absurd at the end.

The thing is Jean has always been absurdly powerful. You just haven't seen it in the movies. Like she can do all the shit Xavier can, like read millions of minds across the planet, but without Cerebro. Her telekinesis is strong enough to hold off Gladiator. This is base Jean Grey as well, without the Phoenix Force.

Calling Jean in this overpowered sounds like someone that never read the comics

power creep and retcons.

originally jean was mostly team mom. weak. only had telekinesis. no Telepathy.
telepathy then retconned in.
did little fighting. mostly talked, and supported.

jean being the kind hearted, and relatively weak power level, is why the Dark Phoenix saga works.
Her power level sky rockets, and she starts acting off. And this Jean would then actually regret what she has done, and kill herself to stop it.

at some point, its retconned that Xavier was using a mind block to keep her weaker. the powercreep did start in the 90's. although even the telepathy was back in the 70's.

this is one of those things, if you only have read comics from the last 20 years, yeah, you might say that. look at what they've done to supergirl, or Ms. Marvel in the last 20 years.

modern comics, Jean grey mind raped Angel. and mind raped iceman to make him gay.

I mean, dumb powercreep is just a universal thing in comics now .. from Superman being a guy that can jump a bit to whatever abomination he became in the last 20-30 years. Batman being a smart, masked detective to the literal meme of how comic-power-level just make absolutely no fucking sense. Etc..
