The space squid things did sort of look like the Farpoint alien on a bigger budget. Honestly, if you removed the Shrike and serialized elements from that episode, it would have been a regular TNG episode: ship is stuck, crew eventually figures out how to escape after talking, they make a nice discovery as their reward

yeah it felt like mostly a regular TNG episode although the crew was a bit dumber / childish (how many shots of people just standing around doing fuck all do we need lol) and I didn't like how Picard didn't pull in anyone from the actual work crew when they hatched their escape plan.

I did dig the whole "lemme chop my hand off to talk to my boss" bit, fucking WEIRD and i don't really get whats going on there. She's not a changling, but maybe part of one is living on her like a parasite or Voldomort in Harry Potter 1? Don't love the (sub)-villain but at least she is hamming it up and fun to watch. Also love how much "ship porn" there has been this season, lots and lots of cool shots of the ships inside and out.

In DS9, they did establish parts of a changling separated from the individual could exist as non-sentient but shapeshifted objects.

That is all I can figure the deal with the hand was. The changling goo didn’t do anything until the machine was activated

I'm enjoying this, but Riker came across as fucking psycho for an episode and a half because they needed a temporary antagonist I guess.

About the nebula:

with so many callbacks throughout the episode, I was kinda hoping this was a Crystalline Entity being born or something.

I was kind of expecting

Species 8472 to come through since someone mentioned it and the face in the hand was kind of wonky.

looked like baby things from TNG episode 1, Encounter at Farpoint, and I think Bev or Picard even said that at some point

Mostly enjoyed this. Even had a sand in the eye moment at one point. The villain is badly written though, good actress but very comic-book overly dramatic delivery.

Yes,

Again, a throwback to another villain. He was better at the Over-dramatic.

Captain Shaw has definitely been the highlight and best thing in the season, he needs his own spinoff show where he just eats dinner alone, gets drunk, and starts yelling at everyone about how Locutus is an asshole

then he goes to the holodeck and bangs the borg queen

The first season of DS9 isn't all that amazing but the pilot where Sisko confronts Picard over Wolf 359 and comes to a kind of resolution with the Prophets over the death of his wife is good stuff. With Shaw I like the use of a subdued sounds of combat and the voice of Locutus rather than showing something from that episode of TNG or cheating with CGI.

On the other side of that

gonna be awkward when Shaw has to host a Borg because they're good guys now after that two minute conversation the Borg queen had with the boyfriend murderer.

I loled at "life deck"; "independent holodeck power source to relieve stress in a crisis"; "Diana hates me because I didn't say the universe is mysterious enough"; life support is cut and they instantly suffocate.

not sure what the spoiler rules are here
Apparently newton's laws are also out the window when it's tractor beam time. No hypospray Seven? That changeling is strangely suicidal, even while the disembodied floating liquid head boss wants 'the asset'. Just go to engineering or bridge with a phaser dialed to explode if you're kamikaze. (or murder Jack?) Hopefully the show explains why the Shrike had no interest in saving the changeling when they could have easily done so and taken Jack but just decided to sinisterly slow kill them like a Bond villain allowing them to escape.

This season dialed the woke garbage way down and tries to be more like Trek but the quality level just isn't near 90s level.

I wasn’t expecting Ro to show up. Sucks she died same episode, but at least they finally created closure on that storyline

Altered changlings is interesting as well and explains why they want to avoid transporters. Beverly mentioned they don’t have DNA, so presumably a transporter would detect that. But they can more effectively mimic life signs of solid life forms, which would presumably be why ship sensors get fooled

Pretty sure it was Ro's choice to avoid the transporter for reasons, but just really to set up her death.

really enjoying this season, prob best trek since Ds9. Ds9 still slaps so hard. Really like the current show runner Terry Matalas, he is super active on twitter talking to the fans, so hopefully we see more trek from him. he just gets it.
