They released remasters of TOS a few years back and thats what I am watching, its not too bad. Obviously lots of goofy shit but they changed as much of the VFX as they could, still looks like 60s but what you imagine, not what it originally was

not much different but good enough. I'm watching 1 episode a week basically and really enjoying it, especially since the other show i'm rewatching is TNG. Its great to watch before you watch SNW and/or Lower Decks since the last two make a lot of TOS/TNG references.

whats really hilarious is to see how radical the show was for its time when it comes to women/non whites, but also how hilariously backwards it will appear to young people today

Growing up raised by humans he became a total weeb (for Klingon stuff). His idealism runs head first in to the reality of the Klingon Empire on numerous occasions across both TNG and DS9 adding depth to the character and conflict for the writers to explore. Hell, towards the end of DS9 he challenges the fucking emperor to a duel to the death and in victory drags the empire on his own closer to what he believes it should be.

I love the part where Frakes describes the most expensive sets ever and high-list guest stars for the first episodes of an unproven show, created as the last hurrah by the guy getting kicked out of franchise/studio. What do you mean the numbers don't look good? Why do fans previous viewers that enjoyed prior series despise this so much?

The initial backlash against TNG was pretty severe but I guess back then you didn't have your instagram filling up with everyone calling you shit.

Season 1 was pretty fucking bad for the most part. At the time there was almost no scifi on the air, though, and when you are dying of thirst even brackish water tastes wonderful. And they did kill off Tasha.

I could never get into it. Mostly because of Whoopie and Wesley.

The nerds of the day wanted Kirk and Spock back on TV and were not quiet about it. Once the show hit it's stride everyone just pretended that never happened.

edit - just to expand on this a little

The TOS films were successful and there were plans for a relaunch. Instead of that happening you get season one TNG.

Ya, it is easy to forget, but TOS fans initially did not like TNG at all. Then when DS9 rolled around, TNG fans didn't think it was "real Trek".

Yeah the TOS holdovers were so strong - that - that was the entire point of "Generations"

The plot of generations is so stupid.

Its so stupid the Kirk part is not even the bad part...its the entire premise...

Bro could have just gotten a shuttle and driven into the ribbon ANYTIME HE WANTED TO

That movie does not make sense as presented. You can go anywhere at any time and you pick a couple hours before what's his face blowing up a star and annihilating the Enterprise. That also means before you even choose a time and place you've got infinite time to plan and this was the best you could do? The fan theory that Picard hallucinated the whole thing while dying from heat stroke on that barren rock fits better.

There a bunch of Shatnerverse novels that take place after Generations where Kirk is brought back to life and goes on adventures.

I'm kinda interested in seeing what this first one is like. I assume it's crap but it might be interesting crap.

Yeah… there are just too many stupid stupidness even following their own “rules and reasons” for 90% of generations to make any coherence

TNG is okay for the "good" episodes but there are some absolute stinkers in there too.

TOS might be too cheesy to watch anymore. I remember trying to watch a bit of it like 10-12 years ago and noped out after about 10 minutes.

There are some cheesy episodes and some outright bad ones, but a lot of the OG Trek was build on solid sci-fi ideas that let the viewer think without slamming them over the head with imposed morality. Special Effects have not held up (the remastered versions help a bit here) but the core stories and character interactions are the best in all of Trek, until DS9 came along.

Some specific Episodes that are top tier Trek-
City on the Edge of Forever- First time the emotional toll of time travel and really toxic empathy were tackled in sci-fi. Some great acting too.
Let this be Our Last Battlefield- Probably one of the best commentaries on racism ever done in any story genre.
Balance of Terror- Run Silent, Run Deep in space and pretty much defined how combat worked in Trek.
Trouble with the Tribbles- Iconic character comedy in sci-fi setting. Still genuinely funny. DS9 "sequel" was equally good.
Devil in the Dark- Yeah the creature looks silly, but its a good combination of story telling, tension, and plot pivots.
Omega Glory- Interesting premise and good commentary on the concept of the Prime Directive.
Journey to Babel- Lots of moving parts to this one and the first time you get to really see the internal politics of the Federation.
The Enterprise Incident- Great Espionage episode that fleshes out the Romulans quite a bit.
Day of the Dove- Fleshed out the Klingons a bit more as something other than just cartoon villains. Lots of great character scenes.
Taste of Armageddon- The idea of a push button war run by computers is eerily prescient these days and this episode has actually improved with age.
