Starfield is definitely a game I want to like, but it just ends up disappointing me every time I've given it another chance. Especially Shattered Space. Should have been a cool bit of handcrafted content, but it ended up being the most "Skyrim in space" part of the game by far. I'll never understand why they insisted on putting so much space magic into the game instead of just going with standard sci-fi. They never even got something as simple as spacesuits right, from a realism standpoint.

I'll probably still fire it up one last time when Free Lanes/Terran Armada launches though. Mostly because Bethesda finally did one thing right and added the paid part of the update to the existing Premium edition. I do want to check out the updates to ship building though. Last time I played it (Shattered Space launch) barely anything had changed and there was basically only one "best" ship you could build, and you still had to deal with all the bullshit with ladder/door placement. I'm curious to see if adding stairs and whatever new habs/components come with the Terran ships will actually change anything.

Definitely going to setup a savegame for it using console scripts though. I will never not hate how they make you lose a companion in NG no matter what you do, and since I already know how the whole story goes, playing NG+ from the start is the only option imo. It seems like Free Lanes will make anything beyond NG+1 unimportant (especially since the starborn ship and armor are far less desirable when you'll be able to take some stuff with you from one NG to the next) if you don't care about seeing the 'weird' universe variants--which pretty much all suck and will just make you want to finish that cycle as fast as possible anyway.
I had a handful of mods installed that really made ship building a lot more fun. A couple were just other parts and stuff and I didn't use many of them but you might find a module here and there that was useful, but there was a small one that let you add a 1x1 staircase that you could stack up to like four or five times. Gives you a lot more flexibility in what stuff you want to make.

There's also another free one on the creations deal that expands Walter's ship brand, and the redone habs for those are pretty cool. There's even a storefront in New Atlantis right by the spaceport, just don't run the mod that makes the Viewport hotel a thing, they'll conflict because they're basically in the same space, but the Stroud ship deal is pretty good.

My problem is I always just gravitate towards making the same sort few types of ships. I always end up going and getting the Mantis ship and then I rebuild it, and then I make a heavier cruiser type thing with the bridge that has the staircase. My last playthrough though I kind of stayed in my little mantis frigate, but then I added my bigger cruiser to the fleet with auto turrets and stuff, and anytime I got jumped by the watchtower faction, it would warp in with a couple of other ships to help in the fight. Also having a few other ships with you for the crimson fleet storyline was pretty fun.

I tried a couple of other storyline mods that people made, but they'll screw with the game specifically for the main story because of companion issues. Watchtower I think was one of the problems even though it's really good but you need to get to the halfway point within the game before you really sort of engage that deal, but maybe there's some sort of work around.
