I think the 'meh' factor comes from the fact that Bethesda are no longer pioneers when it comes to visual fidelity/technology. Morrowind and Oblivion had bleeding edge graphics and massive open worlds that blew you away when you first saw them. Now almost every game has amazing graphics and giant open worlds.

I do have some realistic predictions, though

1) Planets will have the NMS effect: there will be slight variations, but after a bit you’ll notice a lot of sameness. I suspect you’ll have like maybe 10-12 biome types. Alien combos will be mix and match. PoI will pull from a pool, with some more rare than others. A future DLC will add more.

2) poi on rando planets will be mostly cut&paste, kind of like in ES or FO reused certain interiors. So I expect a lot of piratebase1, piratebase2, etc

3) I suspect in terms of more handcrafted stuff, you’ll probably see something on the scale of FO76…maybe slightly more

That's kind of how NMS is. World feels super lonely. Only place that's really lively is the Anomaly, and that'll be like Alpha Centauri or whatever it was they said was there main city place.

Except in NMS you do occasionally run into other player's stuff. Especially when they release a new expedition and then you find planets with tons of others around. This won't have that.

Im just kind of hoping for Skyrim in space. FO new Vegas was an incredible game as well, if they can recapture some of the things that made those games successful I think it could be a great game.

I wonder if it will be better than Mass effect.

As in actually developed by Bethesda, rather than published? Looks like Fallout 76, with Fallout 4 being their last typical 'Bethesda Game'-style release.

The good:
-I do like the stated "NASApunk" art design direction that they went in. For me, as soon as they mentioned that a lot of the instrument panels in the ships and spacesuits were supposed to rip off of the Apollo program (and the game was meant to kind of evoke the awe people had in the early days of the space race), what they were trying to do clicked for me.
-A lot of those environments are gorgeous. I really love the particle effects on the planetary rings.
-While the gameplay looks derivative, it looks like they've paid attention and tried to copy the best parts of their competition.

The bad:
-Characters are still kind of uncanny valley (although they are not at the deepest nadir), and the animations look kind of janky even though they allegedly did a rewrite of the animation engine.
-Concur with other people that in traditional Beth style, probably going to take at least a year for the modders to wring out the most glaring bugs unless Microsoft really cracked the whip at Todd and Co to make sure QA was good out of the gate.
-The gameplay looks derivative.

lol. yeah. that 1000yard star, odd head bob, and mouth moving out of sinc with the head. I almost have to think it was intentional to remind every one this is TES people.

All this NMS comparisons seems weak to me. NMS is pretty empty. I expect TES npc interactions. like fallout and skyrim.

Empyrion is a pretty solid base/ship building survival co-op game btw..

I must not fear the hundred-year wait of Starfield,
For it has sown seeds of anticipation in devoted hearts.
Fear is the mind-killer that shatters dreams,
The little-death that brings disappointment to eager souls.
I must not fear the hundred-year wait of Starfield,
For it has sown seeds of anticipation in devoted hearts.
Fear is the mind-killer that shatters dreams,
The little-death that brings disappointment to eager souls.

I will face my underwhelming reveal.
I will permit it to wash over me and through me.
And when the initial excitement has faded,
I will turn to faith and devotion, unwavering.

Where the gameplay faltered, hope shall find its way.
Where patience wears thin, faith shall be my shield.
I will not succumb to doubts and despair,
For I am bound by my love for the unknown, yet unexplored.

I will embrace the glitches and unfinished quests,
For they are the challenges that shape a world in progress.
I will not dwell on what could have been,
But instead, cherish the promise of cosmic exploration.

My faith in Bethesda shall remain unbroken,
For they have crafted legends that endure through time.
Though the first gameplay reveal may have faltered,
I will hold steadfast in my dedication and trust.

Through delays and missed expectations,
I will persevere, undeterred in my adoration.
For the stars beckon with their infinite wonder,
And in the anticipation, I find my strength.

The disappointment may linger, but my resolve will not waver.
For in faith and perseverance, I shall find solace.
The universe of Starfield may yet unfold,
A tapestry of possibilities and dreams realized.

I will not fear the empty void of underwhelming reveals,
But instead, I shall embrace it as a stepping stone.
For in the depths of disappointment lies growth,
And through dedication, the stars shall align.

I will not fear the hundred-year wait of Starfield,
For in my unwavering devotion,
I shall find the universe I've yearned to explore.
And in that cosmic odyssey, I shall discover my true self.

The more they show, the less impressed I am. Still hoping for the best though.
Ok, I watched the full 45 minute presentation. The game does look good and has a lot more features and going on than that 2 minute trailer implied. Gives me some hope that it is not a typical Bethesda/Xbox shit show.

It was from the Summer Games show. Here is the deep dive

This looked good to me. I never played no man's sky though,so no way to compare. I probably wouldn't care anyway, as long as a game is fun.

Will wait and see.
