Lot of people hyping up SteamOS here to be something it's not.

You can use 100% of what SteamOS does right now just by installing Arch Linux and using the same Wayland compositor they use for the Big Picture mode or whatever it's called these days.

Under the hood it's like 95% just Arch Linux with a few custom packages installed and the root file system being immutable. The desktop mode for SteamOS just installs Plasma with a few stylistic changes to make it look Steam-ey.

The real selling point of SteamOS has always been Proton, which is freely and fully accessible on basically any Linux distro now. And it's definitely great - you can basically any game you want on Linux these days outside a few online-only outliers due to their anti-cheat garbage (league of legends, Apex, that kind of stuff). If you really wanted to bail on Microsoft it's entirely possible to do now (unless you wanna play League of Legends for some reason). I haven't run Windows since like....2021? I've yet to encounter a game on Steam that doesn't function 'out of the box'.

Going to ask a a couple stupid questions. Are you saying as a daily driving PC you are strictly running Linux? How do you handle basic things like email, "Teams" like meetings etc, or anything that needs Windows interactions? I REALLY just want to ditch Windows.

Steam OS will be what makes me swap to Linux for one good reason. Familiarity.

Dual boot pc with a minimal Windows partition. Load into Windows only when you need to use Teams. Alternately, get a cheapo used NUC or minipc and a 13" monitor. Use an a/b switch for your kb and mouse.

I use a work computer for work lol.

You can use that kind of stuff in browsers if you really had to, but I draw a pretty lard line between my computer and my work computer.

Why do you need Teams on your personal computer? My main PC is Linux, no issues with anything. SteamOS making things just functional without me having to tinker with Linux is going to be great. I want to retire my 17 year old tower.

Steam computer is something I'd never ever buy, but I can see how it makes sense in appealing to normies and console type gamers. I think it will be a pretty good hit, and over time will get better as it offers a unified platform for devs/modders to optimize for.

Email and Teams are browser based apps. Teams also has a standalone app for Linux.

Daily driving, I use Fedora on a laptop. It has several GUI options, and one is nearly the same as Windows.

In terms of Teams, it is going to be a hot pile of dog shit no matter what OS is runs on. It is the worst peace of shit software known to mankind.

Windows 11 is a hot pile of dog guano, but can be made much less so with toolkits and scripts that remove all the trash. I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 11. God damn, the OOB experience is worse than taking a cheese greater to the testicles. Overtly bad and annoying on every level. After about 2 hours of fiddling, I did get to the point to where I could nuke all that dog shit. It is fine now, but man....hair pulling experience.

SteamOS is going to be a gaming OS, not a replacement for Windows and all its apps.

If you want to get your dick wet on Linux, grab a used Thinkpad from Ebay. Less than $500 gets you a good one. Thinkpads generally have decent Linux support. Download Fedora to a thumb drive and blast it to the laptop when you get it. 10-15 minutes later and you have a fully operational and functional OS without having to cheese grater your testicles. No account with MS needed, no account with anyone needed.

I have Linux for various reasons, and one of them is that it will be the only functioning OS on the planet after WWIII kicks off.

Oh yeah, you won't be playing anything other than pixel games on these old Thinkpads unless you like gaming at 4 FPS.
