Stranger Things

This TV show is all about a cool idea stretched thin so much most of the cast kids are now legal adults.

You could literally see the "wrap this fucking shit up" on David Harbor's face. He went gray during the course of the show.

I started (and finished) Dark after reading through this thread and don't want to necro bump that thread.

Halfway through season two I was getting tired of Jonas silently looking at things with a shocked expression on his face but it was nice watching something as complex as Dark that doesn't shit itself in the final stretch. It's crazy that we get a competent ending to a story with such infrequency that it really stands out when we do get one.

I still rank GoT as worse. GoT had been such a strong well written show in the early seasons . . . before running out of material from GRRM then the production needed to write it themselves. So many ideas just got shat onm ruining the legacy that the show had built.

Agree a decent show going out bad isn't the same thing as the level of complete character assassination we saw in GoT.

Characters weren't these amazing works of art in Stranger Things. Even if characters were assassinated in the Stranger Things finale GoT style-- the characters in Stranger Things aren't GoT level, so the offense can't be worse.

While the final season and overall ending of Stranger Things isn't without its (glaring) flaws, and even though it's probably a good excuse I suppose, I think it kind of works well with the 80's vibe, entertainment in the 80's often had abrupt endings where everything worked out even though it really made no sense if you scratched the paint a bit. They wrote the end to be mostly a happy ending for everyone even though realistically most of the characters should have taken a trip to prison for several decades but who wants to see that?

I wonder how intended some of the parallels with Stephen King's IT were : the first season gives huge IT : Part 1 vibes with all those young kids going around against a monster and the adults being mostly useless of course, but the last season having the grown kids going against a cosmic spider monster was another huge parallel to me, and it was quite satisfying to see for that reason alone (even with the kids teleporting up the cliff).

One thing's for sure, even with a flawed ending, Stranger Things' ending felt a LOT more satisfying than Game of Thrones' ending. Game of Thrones not only managed to create a terrible ending with a really bad last season, it also somehow managed to turn Game of Thrones from "that thing every single person is talking about at the water cooler" to "that thing no one will ever mention again". Have you heard anyone saying they're rewatching Game of Thrones?

I'd even argue that the show ended so badly that it killed a LOT of potential interest in the books, something not even Wheel of Time's adaptation or Rings of Power managed to do.

At two different gyms over the last 5 years I've overheard low-mid 20's zoomers discussing their fresh GoT watch. I think there isn't a lot of standout fantasy series and GoT still rises to the top and gets recommends somehow. Likely off the popularity of Outlander which launched period series into many new households. Outlander sort of makes people continue to seek period fantasy drama. I'm guessing that is part of what drives whatever GoT recommends are occuring. I doubt it's the LOTR Amazon series, but that could also be driving recommends as people compare it to GoT and mention GoT was better. It had been 2-3 years before I heard of anyone watching GoT, until most recently some kid was talking about how he finished watching it to another guy and Bran on throne result etc. I wanted to ask who he thought should have been on the throne, but they moved off the subject quick. There was no shade thrown or negativity in these watercooler conversations. The other kids back in 2020 just liked how "savage" Eddard Stark was.

I'll never forget the defenders of Lost's ending.

I don't think anyone defended GOT or ST endings.

We can probably summon one of them to this thread. Here, I'll get it started: In the final episode of Lost they confirm that they were actually in purgatory all along.

Game of thrones is on my girlfriends heavy rotation along with Last Kingdom and Spartacus.

I think she just likes seeing Utrecht and Jon Snow and all the dudes in Spartacus naked.

Stranger things won't have that kind of staying power.

The worst ending of any show ever is the finale for Enterprise.
