The US's involvement in Vietnam was a long chain of events (escalations) starting with Truman and his backing of France's imperialism instead of keeping promises of independence made during WW2, to the Vietnamese. If it wasn't for De Gaulle using the threat of the commies taking over France (without his great and wise leadership), due to losing elections if they had to give up the prestige of holding southeast Asia, Vietnam would have most likely become a democracy after WW2.
Could JFK have stopped the slide into what would eventually cost thousands of American lives in Southeast Asia and thousands more ruined by the trauma of those that came home? Sure, but for the 50s, 60s, and 70s the US political establishment was subsumed by the Domino Theory of how Communism was going to take over the world. On the US side, the single biggest villain in the Vietnam War was probable McNamara.
The first American serviceman killed in the Vietnam conflict was in 1954.
