I think the very first rule of being "that girl" is that you don't need to point out or try to convince people that you're "that girl".

I get not wanting to just retread old ground, but making some of the most wholesome superheroes ever into pathetic cucks (Superman) and drunken messes (Supergirl) is not going to win you any new fans, and will certainly alienate a lot of old fans.

Supergirl always had her issues, that's true, and you could argue that Tony Stark being a drunken mess (in the comics) was a vital part of his backstory, but this is just Gunn being stupid and thinking he's edgy. Even if Supergirl somehow works through her issues in the movie, I doubt most people will care.

There is definitely a place for flawed heroes to overcome their demons or adversity or whatever, and often that makes for a much better character. But Superman is literally the bastion of hope in comics, and seeing him get shit on all throughout his movie was extremely disheartening. Now we see 90% of the Supergirl trailer having her being a drunken mess throughout, so I am not very optimistic that it will somehow make me all warm and fuzzy about her character by the end.

Kara's issue is that she remembers what was lost, whereas Clark has no memories of Krypton. She's also older than Clark, while at the same time being younger (space travel bs, don't ask) and less mature/experienced because by the time she gets to Earth, Clark is already grown and lived a life with his down-to-earth parents. Clark is literally the most important thing in the world to her, while also being a harsh reminder of everything she lost. Sure, in the real world that could drive someone to drink, but this is fucking Supergirl and Superman. They should NOT be depicted the way Gunn is doing so. You can make them vulnerable and uncertain, but they always, ALWAYS come out with their priorities straight in the end. Watering them down and making them "less" is honestly a disservice to the characters, and I hate it. Yeah, we all get bored with the Big Blue Boyscout, but we also know that's how he is, and to change that is wrong.

The best version of Kara is the animated movie, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. You can see within the first 5 seconds of this clip that Clark is like a big brother to her, not a fucking doormat/dog watcher like Gunn has him. Kara would do anything to defend Clark, and vice versa. Did anyone get the impression that FetalAlcoholGirl would lift a finger for Superman in the last movie? I doubt she'd even sober up for him.

I'm sure I am missing context but is there a reason why Superman got dispatched in all of 5 seconds while Supergirl is going toe to toe with Darkseid for the rest of the clip?

Supergirl tends to seem stronger than Supes, only because she didn't grow up being soft and doesn't restrain herself. So she goes all out almost all the time.

guess depends on the writer/backstory, but many have her a stronger and better fighter. she has either been trained by krytonians or wonder woman. she has grown up in heavy gravity and absorbed more solar radiation in her travel to earth so can absorb yellow sun radiation better.

Superman also isn't a trained fighter - he has raw strength, but he isn't a warrior

They make this point a few times in the comics , usually when he's sparring with Wonder Woman and she hands him his ass repeatedly because she was raised for combat and comes from a straight up warrior society, and has near equivalent tier strength to him apparently.

As for this movie, it will once again probably show the kinds of characters and driven pieces Gunn can do well, probably a lot better than Superman did. But I still think it will struggle because the core audience of Superman fans are for the most part still seemingly pissed at how he handled that movie, and he needs those people to show up. Because the Peacekeeper/Suicide Squad/GOTG crowd probably isn't.

Ugh, more shitty girl boss movies as if we didn't have enough of this shit in the last decade. Chicks dont care about superwhatever Marvel/DC and guys def dont care about superbossgirl. They are squandering millions on this shit as if the last decade of failed boss chick movies didnt kinda prove that no one gives a shit about this crap. Its like the WNBA in movie format.

Yeah, dudes on FOH are super-studs who routinely refer to 8's as 2's, and so forth.

For clarity, my issues with this movie aren't about the "woman is super stronk" thing above, that was just a tangent. Kara-El is super stronk, yes. My only issue with it is glamorizing being a drunken mess. Maybe it'll be a good movie where the "drunken mess" aspect is treated as a problem to be overcome rather than "cool", IDK. Just lame to see it glamorized when we as a society are moving away from drunken debauchery and that sort of stupid behavior now.

I'm pretty sure (could be wrong obviously) that drunken mess Kara will be for part of the movie until she has whatever awakening she needs to to get her shit together, like Stark did in Iron Man.

Or, she could be a drunken mess girl boss, hard to tell for now, but I imagin they are using it as a starting point to show what will be her character growth.

Whoever said she wasn't this in the comics though, is not 100% correct. In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow she was a mess due to the traumas she had been dealing with due to Krypton's destruction. I think this is going to lean heavily into that at first, or that's my hope anyway. Or, maybe shes a teen who drinks and doesn't take shit seriously instead? Not far off from most teens/early 20's kida either.
