Sounds like it might be worth waiting to start playing this until the next patch is out. This popped up on YouTube this morning, community post from the guy (Pastaphobik) who makes a ton of builds for the game and I guess also works with the devs on testing their changes:
Normally I'd agree but this game is just so broken when it comes to balance that it becomes boring even in act 1. I can't even imagine what it's like with the DLC items.
yeah. its so easy, that toning back player power is probably the right move. dark fantasy. should be at least a little bit scary and challenging.
as a mage, pretty sure there were only two things remotely a threat. wyrd knight first time. and galahad. and really both were more just hp sponges then real threats. every other npc including bosses I was goofing around and trying things. not fighting for real.
I don't remember what setting I started. probably normal. I think higher difficultly is just hp sponge, more hp. Which IDK. one shotting enemies by the end of act 1 was the norm. so more hp would help.. a bit.. but honestly, the difficulty issue is more then that. enemies are slow, don't have complex attacks etc. can easily dance around them, stay out of melee, even if I wasn't using summons..
double checking a new game. yeah.
pretty sure I did adventure mode. veteran says enemies hit harder, and have more hp.
that would not matter much for mage. maybe matter some for melee. and cost rangers more arrows..
there is also the "survival mode". Which says, "can only save at bonfires". not sure if food or anything else is a factor here.
if its just "can only save at bonfires" eh.. thats, not a huge deal. you can create bonfires outside at any time, anywhere. so trivial. in dungeons. theres only like 1 mega dungeon in the game. the rest are honestly pretty small caves. you can't create bonfires in the dungeons/caves. so this is a small challenge, but not really anything major.
I was basically vanilla game (with DLC) , I did DL a mod to allow the console (thinking in case of bugs since all the jank) but never wound up needing it.
I’m turning off game updates. I’m enjoying the game a ton right now as is. I don’t want my mage nerfed. Maybe I’ll change my mind once I get super OP, but I’m taking my sweet time with this one so far and am 38 hours in and still in act 1.
balance changes,
new enemies, new content in act 3.
audio improvements.
many qol improvments. item favorites. seaside mansion editing.
console improvements.
Hey everyone! It took us a bit longer than expected, but here we are – Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon version 1.20 is now live! And yes, this update is BIG (you’ll see that in a minute), so we believe the direct jump to v1.20 is justified :D As per usual, we’ll get to the full patch notes in...
That’s actually a really nice patch. Any nerfs appear to be mostly optional with original items being retained while the new update versions being added to your inventory. You can also toggle the new stat softcaps. I wasn’t going to download it fearing it would gut my build, but now that it’s mostly optional with some nice updates and QoL changes, I’m updating to 1.20 once it hits consoles.
Rest assured I'll be reviewing it with great scrutiny myself and seeing what other kinds of games you fellas said were "fine". I do, sincerely not snidely, appreciate the outreach and suggestion.
I might give a pass on BG3 reviews.... mmmmmebbe.
It's fine to call me crazy. It's also fine for me to say I told ya so one day. We'll see.

Yeah pardon the disclaimer I have some supremely retarded and disingenuous "gotcha" type idiots to contend with around here. They happen to be given power in this realm. Is what it is.
So I finally finished the game tonight at Level 75, completed the so called secret ending as a mage, what an incredible game. I don't have any compunction about just stopping a game if I am not having fun, but I played this one all the way through and then some. I, too, was worried about the nerf patch, and that slowed me down somewhat (I also had a bugged quest at the end of Sargas lock me out of an item that would have made my crit dmg equal my sneak dmg, and I was huffy, then I took a few days off because of work, then I was mad about the nerf patch, then I hit the quest at the end of Act with Beor's heart that essentially I thought enforced gay marriage, no I am not gay marrying you Beor so your dad/bro will go looking for the Holy Grail. Then I looked at some guides and found a way around it.
I wish I had known about the softcap toggle.
This isn't terribly or directly "I see dead people" spoilerish; more commenting on the nature of the story but tagging it just to make sure I am in the clear so folks won't be upset either way.
This would have been just as compelling a title without the King Arthur mythos laid over the top of it; it bore little actual resemblance to anything actually Arthurian, other than some vague handwaving about the disorder in the realm and Arthur's return to restore it but even that is twisted to serve this game's purpose. I think I would have preferred them just to have alluded to the Arthurian mythos without actually using it. It's actually a really great story underneath that actually has little bearing other than some truly BROAD brush strokes.
All in all, both narratively (turns out to be a really good story waiting to unfold) and gameplay wise, I greatly enjoyed this game. Another fantastic Polish studio even if they did take a loooong time to remove(ish) all (kinda) the jank (sorta), was well worth the time and money. Sure, you can get overpowered but there was a long time were I wasn't, and was scraping by to survive; this made those victories over WyrdKnights and even the Bounties in Act 1, feel super gratifying. I really felt powerful in the end, and wasn't bored but commensurate with my station as who you are in the game.
8.5/10 would buy again, I got 142 hours out of it so far with just the one build, you can't ask more than that out of any game.
Where was the soft cap toggle? I finished the game a few days ago and never did find it in the settings.
edit: game was good. Enjoyed it a lot especially act 1 when I was weak. I got super OP without even really upgrading my armor very much and didn’t go hunting for the optimal armor setup. 2000% spell power and high crit made the entire game trivial. Solid 8/10 for me, and if it were more challenging I’d bump that up another half point.
