Hey everyone. I searched a few times for a Tempest Rising post and didn't see anything populate.

Has anyone tried this? I used to love WC 2-3 and SC 1-2. I never played C&C, I always see comparisons to C&C but it's lost on me. How is this game compared to StarCraft, for example? I've played Company of Heroes 2, Sudden Strike 4, Man of War, etc, but I didnt like those nearly as much as the SC and WC method of base building and attacking that way. Just micromanaging troops wasn't very fun w/ Company of Heroes, for example.

I played it and liked it a lot, very much feels like a modern Command and Conquer, only thing missing was live action cutscenes. Also has a great soundtrack.

i played thorugh the two campaigns and i really like it.

I saw you didn't play cnc, but I have told everyone so far that it's like cnc's setting, with some cold war style geopolitical overtones like red alert thrown in.

it has bases like cnc 2 / red alert 2. and units like C&C generals.

to a non C&C player i would say that base defense is pretty good and you generally want to do it. much like C&C you're protecting a harvester who gathers resources as your only means of making money. it gathers the tempest (horrible vines terraforming the world) outside your base and vehicles who move thorugh it take damage so you can't really box in the tempest like you could a mineral patch in starcraft.

The units have WAY LESS clickies you MUST use than wc3 and i guess sc 2. some do, but it's more used for like deploying their version of a seige tank, or putting a special unit in stealth or something.

The mechanics of it were very CnC, so infantry will die very fast to things that kill infantry and aircraft will die very fast to aircrat killers, but you can make a sufficient swarm to just eat losses and push.

I found myself really enjoying it, but i'm more of a campaign/skirmish/generals challenge enjoyer than competitive.

one of the youtubers i follow who did a deep review of it. he pointed out that the engine seems to have some sort of hard cap on units out that means that super massive battles may not be possible. so you could do like 2x2 but maybe 4x4 would shit itself.

Thanks! It sounds like something I'd like to do. I don't have any interest in playing multiplayer anymore, tbh. I used to play a LOT of SC 1 + 2 multiplayer and I just don't want to get sucked back into that love/hate habit. With SC2, there were some updates around 2018 or 2019 that made the micro management clicks WAY WORSE (if you can imagine). It just got to be too much for me. it wasn't fun anymore because it was so intense.

Also, I noticed the portia spider in your thumbnail. Did you ever read Children of Time (2018) by Adrian Tchaicovsky? It's a scifi love letter to the Portia spider.

no, i'm not familiar with the portia spider. I just like closeups of spiders. they look pretty dope zoomed in. all shiny with big eyes.

Sounds good, company of heroes 2 absolutely broke me with how much micro there was and haven’t really touched one since.

yea i hate micro in RTS. i was furious when i realized WC3 heroes were an integral part of the skirmish play. i basically stopped after the campaign for that reason. I don't want to be telling my hero to use whirlywhirl attack, or my archers to use bonus arrow button.

My favorate RTS is either supreme commander 1 or C&C generals for that reason. C&C generals has the olde c&C style, but the units would get upgrades from research or salvage. then if they got bonus missiles the unit would kind of just do it on it's own internal cooldown without you being involved.

So in tempest rising you may have a unit that has like "deploy mines" or "set up to scan for nearby units" and those are situational.

the engineers everyone uses just actively repairs nearby vehicles. the GDF engineer can deploy a guard tower (like a starcraft bunker), and the dynasty engineer can put out mines. you don't have to click a heal manually so once your deathball gets going, if you have an engineer in the vehicle mass, it will help keep them topped off.

Oh, one thing i just remembered. it seems like tempest has less of C&C's "units can attack while moving" than C&C. so like a fast tank doesn't do as good a job of manoevering while shooting as like NOD light tanks, or those hover things in SC2. it
's most obvious on the planes and choppers IMO. you can't really do bombing runs like you could in C&C2/3 RA 2/3. you'll send the plane/chopper thing out and it'll zoom right to the target. then slow/stop, do it's attacks, then you mash a button to send it back to the helipad. it's not like the afforementioned C&C games where the jets move so fast they bomb, then run home before being in a ton of danger. kind of a minor annoyance from a long time C&C player. heh

Yeah, I got some friends that will do a gaming night maybe once a month, and they always want to play it that game, and I'm just horrible at it. That's the last RTS I ever bought as well.

Whats this now, another game to add to the list of shame!?

The Steam trailers look damn close to CnC but I see others have said that as well. Might need to purchase this one...

I have it, it's pretty but haven't played it a lot. If they don't increase multiplayer beyond 2v2 it'll be really disappointing. Want to see at least 4v4 so my group can get in some comp stomps once it's on a decent sale. Otherwise most of them aren't going to touch it, especially at $40

COHO is more my group's style of game, we hit that and Age of Empires IV for our RTS fix for the most part. 3 has gotten a lot better, closer to the feel of 2 compared to how 3 was at launch. Not sure what all they changed but it's so much better now - but again, we just comp stomp.

yea it's basically all the good thematic, mechanic, and stylistic mechanics from C&C 1/2 and red alert 1/2, and C&C generals.

its QoL is much more modern than any of hte olde c&C games which run like buttholes by today's standards

Man this does look cool but just makes me pine for c&c style alternate history with an interesting geopolitical story and JK Simons leading the way in the cutscenes.
