Take all of the movies released in a given year from 1970 to 1999. Tally up all the good ones, then tally up all the bad ones, and see what kind of score you come up with. You might have a year with some really great movies released, but a few stinkbombs drags it down perhaps.

For me, it's 1994, no question.

The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Dumb and Dumber
Clerks
Forrest Gump

1994 is the 1927 Yankees of movie years, change my mind!

EDIT:

Edited the thread to include more years. Thought about going to 2005 or so, but eh 1999 is good enough. Sticking with the 94 claim though.

Come at me

1994 is undoubtedly the only answer. That was a fucking epic year for good movies across all genres. No other year in that decade can compete.

You missed The Lion King, Natural Born Killers, Wyatt Earp, Ace Ventura, Speed, True Lies, Motherfucking Stargate and Leon!

1999 MIGHT come close, but even it can't compete.

I was burying the lede by not mentioning 1999 as the obvious competitor, but I was thinking it was at least a close call.

Hmmm, maybe I should edit this thread to include more years than just the 90s if this isn't even a close call.

I was going to say 1999. The Green Mile, The Boondocks Saints, The Matrix, Fight Club, Any Given Sunday, Sixth Sense, Being John Malkovich, Office Space, Dogma, South Park, American Beauty...

I'm a bit younger than most of you guys, and 1999 is about when I really started "getting into" movies, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but there sure are a lot of classics from that year.

1990

Goodfellas
Total Recall
Hunt for Red October
Miller's Crossing
Pretty Woman (to show you are a sensitive man)
Die Hard 2
Tremors
It (Tim Curry version)
Nikita
Young Guns 2
Another 48 Hours
Jacob's Ladder
Hard to Kill, (skinny) Steven Seagal's masterpiece
Duck Tales the movie
Predator 2
Darkman staring Liam Neesons
Wild at Heart
Robocop 2
House Party aka "that kid'n'play movie"
The Adventures of Ford Forlaine
Ghost "Not Much Raping" Dad
Troll 2

If you include other decades then 1987 wins hands down with Predator, Lethal Weapon, Good Morning Vietnam, Princess Bride, Robocop, Full Metal Jacket, Planes Trains and Automobiles, etc

If Star Wars had actually been good, I think '99 would have won but I'm going to have to agree with '94. Overall, it had a better variety of really good movies. Early 90s were stuck with sequelitis, and the entire decade had some really slow quarters where a great year either peters out or started slow.

1999 was the best fucking year. More than just movies, but that'll always be the fondest year I look back on.

This is a sneaky way to get people to reveal their ages.

It's obviously 1982 though.

Blade Runner. ET. Conan the Barbarian. TRON. The Dark Crystal.

Ah, fuck it, editing the thread to include more years, because what the hell

Still 1994.

Slightly younger generation will go with 1999(my second place pick) and the slightly older crowd will go with something like 1982 (my third place [Khorum left off The Thing, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, 48 Hours, Star Trek II, Poltergeist, First Blood, The Last Unicorn]) or 1977.

Pretentious film school kids will say 1939 to look cool.

I was born in 86 but I remember all of the movies from 87 very well after looking at a list. I think I've watched the majority just because they'd be on TV about the age where I actually began to remember stuff. This year has to be tough to beat. The Running Man is my favorite easily.

Agreed!

I'm still waiting for people to hit others with the absolutely shit movies from those years to disprove their claims.

Finished high school during the late 90s so 1999 for me. Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty.

Not unquestionably the best year but 1997 had Boogie Nights, Good Will Hunting, Jackie Brown, Donnie Brasco, Austin Powers, The Fifth Element, Starship Troopers.

1998 w/ Dark City, Rushmore, Saving Private Ryan, Bulworth, Fear and Loathing, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Big Lebowski.

'95 is another solid year.

Billy Madison
Toy Story
Die Hard 3
GoldenEye (game released in 97)
In the Mouth of Madness if you're into Lovecraft
Get Shorty
The Usual Suspects
Mallrats
Apollo 13
Leaving Las Vegas
Casino
12 Monkeys
Braveheart
Seven

Of course 95 also gave us Batman Forever and Waterworld so there's that.

As a 90s teen I'm partial both musically and film/tv wise. That decade had a fuck ton of good movies.
