It's not a worry of mine personally (nor am I fond of Cheeto's - I'm a pretzel man myself) - but lots of people are very privacy worried in the US - in case you're low on friends and have never noticed that as a result.
And on "smartphones doing it" - I'm not up on iPhones but I've reviewed a large portion of Androids with the bro-in-law and I've yet to see one that has an always on camera and/or microphone. The GS4 ads do make it sound like something that may have bucked that trend on the camera side at least - but he's the one reviewing the GS4 at the moment.

And you don't honestly think that there's enough "fucking lunatics" out there to impact sales and make it so that the X-1 doesn't go the way of the Dreamcast from lack of adoption from people that are afraid of being spied upon? Honestly?
Even assuming this was the best console in the world (which it's clearly not going to be, by a long shot) - if there's a low adoption rate game production is going to go off a cliff very quickly as publishers stop bothering to produce games for it.
Which would leave it as a $X/mo voice automated channel switching doodad for hundreds of dollars that does the process worse (thanks to needing an IR blaster for most setups - aren't IR blasters so awesome and effective?) than a $50-70 Harmony remote.
Feature after feature seems to be designed to drive a demographic off - the privacy paranoid with this most recent revelation - but if you think there's going to be a mass adoption of the system with all the bombshells just in the day and a half or so that we've had so far.... you're out of your mind.
And without mass adoption game developers move on to other pastures to sell their wares - see Dreamcast.

I'm not impressed with either to be honest. Slightly leaning towards the PS4, I just find the paranoia about the kinect to be bizarre considering that the majority of people paranoid are probably using facebook and smartphones while they complain about it.
I personally do not give a fuck about any "security" issues the Kinect shit might have, however being forced to hook up an accessory that is 100% completely unnecessary is pretty damned obnoxious and stupid. There is not a single legitimate argument to be made for that being required and it's a big fat eyesore that would have to be stashedsomewherearound my entertainment center taking up space and being obtrusive. The thing is pretty clearly for marketing data collection.

I wouldn't be so sure. Especially with how it's been documented that PS4 is easy as fuck to program for and the Xbox One is going to take more effort to get what you want out of it. Basically a role reversal from last gen, except this time, the PS4 is more powerful in practice, not just in theory like the PS3 was.
Remember the backlash toward Bayonetta on the PS3? This might end up being like that, except for most multiplats on the Xbox One.

Xbone is a perfect storm. The stupid COD dog was just the icing on the cake for the name.
i'm not keen on the always on aspect . if i got an x-one i'll just get a decorative box that is large enough for the kinect sensor system and alot of soundproofing padding, drill a hole large enough for the cord - wrap it up in padding put in box, close box. or if i want to use the voice activated aspect, i'd just put in backwards on my tv stand against the wall.
The system and its stupid name shall be mocked and ridiculed as the Xbone for the the entirety of its life and then some.

So I've only been glancing at this thread but the Kinect must always be on, is always listening for voice commands and old headsets won't work nor are new hestsets included?
