I really do not understand the people saying all the Xbox 360 people are going to buy the Xbone sight unseen just because it has Xbox labeled on it. Over the generations brand loyalty has meant nothing because these companies end up fucking up like MS is doing right now. Sony fucked up this genre with their $600 console, Nintendo made their fuck ups with the N64 and Gamecube, Sega fucked up, etc... The entire life of the console industry in the US is littered with these companies fucking up when it comes to moving to the next gen. Right now you are seeing MS blow it big time.

Maybe the reason Sony has been publically courting all the independent developers with "great deals" regarding patching and fees (ie: Mojang, Telltale, Double-Fine, etc) is that they are being pressured by the bigger publishers, and Sony's response is cede a percentage of the dudebro market (exclusivity deals) with it's slimmer profit margins in exchange for more lucrative deals (30% take) on self-published games like minecraft. It's not like Activision or EA is going to cease porting Madden or Battlefield 2992 with the similar architecture, but Sony may end up making more money in the long-run if they stop catering to the larger publisher's desires for exclusivity deals. It's not like The Walking Dead video game is going to sell consoles on it's own... but if one console has games like The Walking Dead, Minecraft, and Massive Chalice, and the other console gets me a golden colored gun in a game that I wouldn't even buy, you know which console I'd be going for.

the one's drm was PLANNED FROM THE START by microsoft- they went to the publishers, not the other way around. and it is worse than we know right now.

currently there is NO way for Videogame Rentals to be done on the One.


to me right now the One is not a Video Game Console,, it is a media computer that plays video games.

Stage 2 of discussing the DRM strategy will be discussed at Gamescom. Rental strategy is a lie. No plan for support; just want to keep quiet. Stage 1 was last Thursday's total clusterfuck.

The "cloud" is totally just a ploy for DRM. It's MS that approached third-parties, not the other way around. EA/Ubisoft support it a lot, but surprisingly not Activision.

One of the DRM plans is worse than you imagine. Can't get enough evidence to say more; people are scared for their jobs.

Even this week's 8-4 podcast had a mention of "Crazy Buttocks said it, I assume it is true".

I can't quite decipher that Sony line though. It seems like "No paywall for online play, but not confirmed", but could also be "Despite rumors, no solid information either way".

Note: I coulda sworn the same "Yeah, our game is cross-platform, we just aren't going to mention that" has gone on for years.

Neogaf is in hyper attack mode right now, any mention of anything related to MS is burried in rage. They aren't wrong for doing it, but appears to be going a bit overboard.

MS really does seem to be doing everything wrong with the Xbone though. They want a digital distribution box and are still trying to remain in the retail space.

I have a feeling the vast majority of Xbone games are going to require a connection regardless of single or multiplayer, at least the ones from the major publishers. While the PS4 may not require a connection, I bet most AAA games will. Tomorrow should be interesting.

The difference is steam actually offers monetary compensation for the loss of certain ownership freedoms. And they can do that because Steam's profit comes from being a "marketplace", rather than a "gatekeeper". "Marketplace" publishing is the future, it's a completely different kind of profit motivation. And no, It's not about "freedom"--as you can see from Apple, Marketplace distribution can still be draconian. However, it is about treating distribution as more of a consignment service, rather than a transfer of ownership. It's a subtle difference, but it's there. And one of the benefits it's more flexibility in pricing, and steam passed those savings onto the customer--it paid the customers to make up for the deficiencies (Lack of ownership) in the new market.

MS isn't doing that. It's asking for a large initial investment from the customer before getting any relevant products. So it's tying the customer to it's distribution BEFORE the customer can even see how it's going to handle distribution pricing. It's not the same as Steam at all. Unlike steam which is only interested in the skim from a bigger market, MS is still looking to make money from ownership (By bilking publishers/studios) and controlling distribution.

The rumor a few pages back is that MS is paying companies to not show or talk about their PS4 version of multiplatform games at E3. Seems like they're trying to make it look like the Xbone will have a much wider selection of games compared to the PS4 since it'll look like no third party has much going on for the PS4.

I still think MS is going for the straight up "AAA or bust" market. They know how much they make from XBL, and decided to cater to that market, and that market only from day one. Looking at it, the Xbone is designed to appeal to the big publishers and with all of the entertainment stuff built in they can expand to that market too. It appears that they could care less about trying to please everyone. From a business standpoint it's probably not a bad move, but it sucks for people that want a game console.

Sony is building a gaming console first, I just hope there are enough gamers to support the insane costs of the market. I think the rising indie market will really help though, they just keep getting better and better.

This is the big thing. The slow death of publishers being the control between capital and studios is giving rise to a lot of smaller studios. If MS is looking to profit from the old model, where publishers bought distribution rights, and controlled the actual product, I think they are going to lose out--because the whole industry seems to be moving away from that. Hopefully Sony does move in that direction and continues to make it economically feasible to skip the publisher middleman and have capital given directly to studios and studios selling directly to customers through marketplaces like whatever Sony might make.

The thing i'm pissed off about is bringing some chick home to watch a movie i've purchased and not being able to play it because her face isn't authorized to be in the room with me when i'm watching said movie, "opps, ive already reached my limit of 5 people that can watch the Avengers 2 with me, it's 2 bucks extra if you wanna be in the room babe". All sony has to do is unplug and kick their dual camera thing across the stage halfway through the presentation and show that the system still does everything without it plugged in and they'll win my money this generation.

Microsoft can try to deflect by saying "it's the movie studio's option" all day, doesn't mean shit. Of course the movie studio is gonna fuck us every way they can, they're pigs, it's in their pig-nature. Microsoft campaigning to be pig-rape-enablers is just as bad as being pigs themselves, they will pay a price for it.

and I don't even care about not being able to rent/trade games >;p
