I wish I knew more about the financial side of the business, it would be pretty easy to figure out the ultimate goal if we knew the numbers. How much do console makers actually make from the licensing? Is the majority of their revenue from console sales or game sales? I think MS is going to try get as much content on XBL as possible and really push the subscription model. If they don't make much on hardware sales or the standard licensing formula of last gen, then why try to sustain that model. The Xbox One isn't a video game console, it's a Xbox Live device... With current policies they can assume every box sold will have a paying subscription along with it.

If you look at the numbers for the last generation consoles, they sold very similar amounts. But if you look at the financials, MS made some very nice profits while Sony struggled. XBL sub revenue could very well have been why.

So let me get this straight. You just pretty much said always on DRM is inevitable so we may aswell cop it on the chin. Then in the next sentence you implied there's a chance the ONLY core competitor to Microsoft may not be using always on DRM... And yet it is so inevitable we should all suck it up?

Big companies love guys like you. I'm a massive Microsoft fan and love my Xbox. All you need to do is go back 10 pages and you will see I was imploring everyone to wait for the facts before getting on the MS hate wagon. Now the facts are out if Sony do what's right I'll DEFINITELY be buying a PS4.

I'm rather worried about how tight lipped Sony is being about this whole thing. It's like they're afraid to open their mouth because they've got something similar up their sleeve so they can't use this as ammunition against the Xbox without making themselves look bad in the process.

They already made a nothing by default with it being up to the publishers statement in the initial announcement. So probably some developers even at worst won't do it on PS4 - assuming it's even remotely bad.

Or wait for the perfect moment. E3. While Xbox is trying to impress everyone with their gaming line up. Remind everyone all the things that MS is doing wrong and all the things you are doing right. Can you imagine how much Sony will own MS in coverage if they come out and do pretty much the opposite of what MS has done?

I honestly think they would CRUSH MS if they did. I actually like what MS are trying to do with TV etc but the core audience is gamers for both platforms and if Sony take this momentum and run with it they will have convinced most core gamers. Where as Microsoft will still be trying to convince non-gamers they need an Xbox not the mention trying to win back gamers.

Every day they keep their mouth shut about any specifics of the PS4 is a day they get free marketing as the "nice coold dude". Why would they mess that up? Even if they have some retared features they will get a royal pardon for just about anything by now.

latest DRM rumor rumor update by a few reliable posters has a live subscription being mandatory. no subscription= no games playable.

not sure if this means silver or gold, but the posters seemed to imply silver is going dodo, gold only, which,,,costs what 10 a month?

being online i can see the live requirement for the cloud stuff(ie silver required to play single player games, but if you have to pay a monthly fee on top of that? wtf is microsoft doing?

half of microsoft's 360 install base has NEVER gone online with the system. they don't even have silver.

Well if it needs to be online, then you will obviously need a Live account. I don't believe for one second, even with all the crazy shit going on, that you will need a Gold membership to play any game at all.

true, only time will tell but CBOAT said the DRM is worse than we thought, requiring gold to play,,,would be worse than we thought.

like i said before the One is not a game console, its a media computer that can play games, exactly like a pc can do-and MS seems to be treating it like that the way the DRM is falling out.

i am pretty sure there was a law passed that specifically defined what a console game was vs computer software, and the way MS is doing it with the One, buying a game for the One is buying computer Software NOT a console game.

Gold to play at all is pretty much the best thing to happen.

It is the first thing I'm hearing that will actually keep xbros from buying the xbone. Everything else so far will just anger a minority and even of those some will buy it anyways for exclusive titles.

I'm guessing the "DRM is worse than we thought" may apply to the Cloud stuff. They can basically force a game to be Always Online, 24/7, regardless of game type, if they slap a Cloud requirement on the back of the box.

What is the point in trying to put all this DRM on a console anyways? Some modder will just come out with a way to hack through it anyways to mod the XB!. Sure it may keep people from playing some online games but at this point id rather by a modded XB1 than a normal XB1, maybe then i can disconnect the kinect!

The point is to kill/curb the Rental and Used Games market, nothing more.

Also, good luck to anyone trying to mod out the Cloud DRM, that's pretty much never going to happen. I'd imagine that the game software itself will have a lot of built-in DRM code that modder/hackers can't get around very easily. There's no point anyways, since almost every single Xbone game will also be on the PC and/or PS4 too. Most of the "exclusives" will also be on the X360/PC as well, not just the Xbone, like Titanfall.
