Is there anything other than "paying for MP?" I agree that it's obviously worse than getting MP free. At the same time, it's not entirely unexpected, given how well it's worked for Microsoft.

I do wonder what's up with things like "Public Events" in the destiny demo. If they do things like random matchmaking for certain battles, I think that could be cool. If they offer dedicated servers (as opposed to player hosting) for multiplayer, then that'd justify the cost even more.

It doesn't look like they'll offer pay-per-view events without a monthly subscription, which is a bit of a shame. I'd not mind at all paying a couple bucks to see a particular game.

In any case, it looks like I'd subscribe to PS+ for the features other than multiplayer, so I don't mind that you need a subscription for it. Given discounted $40/yr cards (here), it's not much of a price to pay. I'm sure I can find a game a month that I'd spend $3 on.
Sony is the obvious choice for the pure gaming console. I'm just surprised that a very cynical and suspicious gaming audience is defending everything that Sony is doing. Especially since they ripped MS for doing some of the same shit.

MS didn't learn from history and looks to be in a worse situation then the PS3 was in.

In case you're still ignorant of facts "PS4 will not REQUIRE AN INTERNET CONNECTION" was an absolute quote - if it's required to actually play games that was a bald-faced lie that realistically wouldn't happen. The only time you'll see the requirement is on MMO titles.

Every single one of those PC titles you reference if you're buying them physically state on the box "Internet Connection Required" for a fucking reason.
Do you know if we'll be able to play Diablo 3 on the PS4 without being online? Or are you considering Diablo 3 an MMO?

Sure Sony doesn't require an internet connection, but game publishers could make it required to play their game. There are plenty of games in this current generation that require an internet connection to play, while technically the system as a whole never mentions that an internet connection is required when you purchase it.

It's all up to the game developer/publisher. Sony isn't making you log onto the PS network everyday, but a publisher could absolutely not let a game finish installing without an internet connection during setup. All they have to do is list "internet connection required" on the back of the game box.

Right and MS is being reviled for it and Sony applauded ....
MS is being reviled for the absolute dog shit way in which they've handled the message related to DRM. If they wanted to play Good Guy MS it takes two seconds to release a statement that reads, "No MS 1st part games will require 24hr check in, we are leaving that in the hands of developers." And you've solved 90% of the problems and are in line with Sony. Instead they sit on their thumbs and allow internet warriors to carry the pitchforks and propagate the feature and how it works, while seemingly continuing to enforce 24 hr heartbeats to all games, singleplayer / multiplayer / 1st part / 3rd party of their own volition and putting none of the onus on the developers for being the bad guys.

Screw it dude. There is no such thing as being a moderate in the console wars.

You are either with the Gods in the Sony world or you are Hitler playing the XBONE, we might as well drop it. This is a Sony only forum from now on.

There is a huge difference between a system that has built-in tools for mandatory DRM and a system where DRM is possible. I seriously doubt all the publishers will hold hands together and decide to all use draconian DRM on the PS4. The thing is anything short of that means anyone implementing draconian DRM on PS4 is being a jackass and pushing customers to his competitors on the platform.

Right, that's the point it will be disclosed EVERY TIME - you'll know that risk with any purchase - just like today.

I wholeheartedly agree that not all publishers will use crazy DRM on the PS4. But do you really believe a company like EA won't? They do anything and everything they can to screw every last penny out of consumers. I think you'll see it on most western-developed AAA titles from the likes of EA and Ubisoft(they already do it on PC, by choice). And as EA and other publishing giants gobble up more and more small developers all the time, the amount of games that don't use DRM will probably lessen year by year.

From my understanding both the Xbone and Ps4 are basically pc's. Why don't the release a plug in card or something like the 3d0 blaster? Seems like that could be a cheaper option with bigger mark up then selling an entire console.

Rather than speculate, we went directly to Sony to find out what's going on. Turns out, it's a very similar system to what's in place on the PS3 now. According to Dan Race, Senior Director, Corporate Communications for Sony, Tretton's statements were referring specifically to playing used games online. He told me,

"The Online Pass program for PlayStation first-party games will not continue on PlayStation 4. Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever."

This is good news for gamers, indeed. In a nutshell, you can buy a used single-player game for the PS4 and play it all you want. If you want to go online with it, you may have to deal with some sort of publisher-determined DRM, be it an Online Pass or whatever.

I never had a problem with online passes, to be honest, so I'm ok with this.

If you can't tell the difference between MS adding its own DRM to EVERY game vs Sony possibly allowing some games to have their own DRM, then you are not being a moderate. You are being an idiot. You seriously can't be this dumb.

After watching many of the E3 trailers, I have to say that "The Division" looks to be amazing. Will buy.

It wasn't just a DRM issue for me that's making me embrace PS4 over XBone, but the idea of a REQUIRED always attached Kinect. What the fuck is up with that? We all know what it's likely for, such as monitoring mostly gaming / entertainment trends, but still, who the fuck wants to buy something that is REQUIRED and you know it'll be monitoring you?

The difference is that Microsoft is willing to take the blame and be the bad guy for enforcing all games to adhere to a DRM where as Sony is making the 3rd party publisher choose whether to be the bad guy. I expect after the first year most 3rd party will encourage you to buy the Xbox version because they can have their DRM and blame Microsoft for having it. They get to keep looking good to their customers while avoiding the hate.

I did call that Sony will allow game trading because it's a great marketing tool to sell on since most people that buy consoles in the first six months of release is core gamers. It's what happens after those months that I'm concerned of.

Just my opinion.

Haha I tried out one of those 3D0 cards back in the day. We sold them at my store, so I took one home for a week to try it out so we could be more informed about selling them to customers. My god, what a nightmare that was. Of course this was back in the day of Windows 95, so driver conflicts were crazy. Sometimes I could get sound, sometimes not. Sometimes the controller worked, sometimes not.

I did like the general idea of the thing though, but if I remember correctly it wasn't much cheaper than just buying the 3d0 system itself. The 3D0 was around $599 or so, and I think this card was like $499.

I don't think I ever sold one in the maybe 6 months that we carried them. In that same era, I did sell two CD-Is though, and I tried to talk the people out of buying it. Felt so bad selling that POS.

It's been accepted on PC for over a decade now - even online passes weren't entirely accepted yet for consoles - there's a world of difference between the two.

I really think you guys are vilifying publishers way, way too much. EA may try some shady shit, but I doubt anyone else will fuck with the status quo.

Especially not the asian publishers - that to date I can't recall a single one doing anything DRM wise to date (besides MMO ones for practical reasons)

and it'll probably be completely accepted on consoles within the next 5 years. 100% of PS4 games may not do it this year, at launch, but you better believe they all will by the time the end of this new generation comes around. Hell, by that point I hope we aren't even dealing with physical media anymore. Buying a box + a disk and waiting for a slowass optical drive to install the game is just dumb in this day and age.
