So do you actually get to own the Xbone by the way, or is that a license too?
Well, they can turn it into a giant paper weight any time they feel like it so I'd say yes, it's a license. At some point they WILL shut down the server functionality for the XBone at which point the box and everything you ever bought for it will become completely worthless. Maybe it will be 10 or 20 or 30 years from now but it will happen.

Regarding Plex and Roku, anyone actually use that? Im working on outting together an HTPC right now and was wondering if it worked well.
Works like a champ, pop on over into the Technology sub section of the forum and I can help you out with whatever you need. You can even make a "steam box" fairly easy so you don't need to fight in the console wars of 2013.

Plex is awesome, and if you're going to get a roku, spend the the extra $50 and get the $100 one with the USB drive and motion remote. My complaint with Roku is the limited formats it will let you play, cant remember why they did it but I thought it was licensing or would jack up the prices of the units? Maybe they are just assholes in that area

I actually like windows phone and Win 8 /shrug but I think a lot of what I love about windows phone is mainly because of Nokias software. Kind of hard to bash WP when it typically has the highest rating out of its users
Yeah, WP being awesome is entirely due to Nokia. Their phone hardware and software is amazing. WP itself isn't all that hot.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/1...nline_pass.php

Gamasutra was able to speak to Scott Rohde, software product development head for Sony Worldwide Studios America to gain further clarity on the matter:

We've already come right out and said we're not going to allow online pass. And the word "allow" is key there. Specifically with online, with PS+ requiring a charge to play online, we would not want any publisher [to charge.]

In general, we're all businesses. Sony or Microsoft is never going to be able to tell EA or Activision exactly what they can do. What we like to say at PlayStation is that we set the precedent. The way we are approaching this is that we want this to be extremely consumer-friendly, extremely retailer-friendly, and extremely publisher-friendly. My personal opinion is that it's hard for me to believe that any major publisher is going to put an extra set of used DRM onto game titles because that wouldn't put them in a good spot, right?

What is the difference between the launch edition and the standard?
There isn't any difference. The "Launch" SKU is just for people who pre-ordered right away and are guaranteed a unit on release day. If you didn't pre-order fast enough you are stuck with the "standard" SKU and are not guaranteed a unit and will be at the mercy of supply & demand and when they get stock in.

Meh WP8 OS as far as performace and the kernel is great. Seen so many android devices get sluggish over time ect and not the case with WP. I still dont own a WP but always fuck around with them. If it wasnt for nokia with the camera, music, offline mapping, city lens and all the BS it definitely wouldnt be half as appealing but the OS is still great

About the TV functionality of XBone - they're using the same terrible design which has been tried and failed due to usability issues over and over again. Here's an article explaining why it sucks:http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/21/43...from-google-tv

Until they're building tuners and full dvr functionality into the box it's going to be a subpar experience.
Right now, AT&T uVerse allows you to use a 360 as a cable box, including DVR features. Last time I checked, they even had it where you could still access DVR recordings on televisions that weren't otherwise activated for cable. So, given that it was possible with the 360, the Xbox One may very well have similar features at some point.

However, it does get back to them having to go through the cable providers. The 360 doing this with uVerse is sort of an added bonus. With the Xbox One being so focused on being integrated with televisions, I have to wonder if they'll allow such inconsistencies of what features it will have depending on which cable providers are in your area.

So has any other console generation been so one sided at its unveiling? PS1 and PS2 seemed a little dominant post-release but I don't remember them being 90%+ favored at being unveiled.

OK, since you're all here and such I'll roll out this question.

Background : We have a Wii which has been gathering dust for years, an xbox 360 which has been pretty played off and on, DirectTV for Sat TV with a DVR, A BluRay player, and a Roku box for the following :
Netflix
Hulu
Amazon Prime (Wife buys enough that this is worth is in shipping, Video is gravy)
Crunchyroll (Wife has a serious Anime habit...)

Desired device : Will do gaming plus everything listed above except the DTV/DVR portion...
Heroic mode : Would also replace the DTV DVR box....

Can either do all of desired? Is there any hope for one unified box any time soon that could also handle up on DVR duties?
