Sony kills concept approval, makes moves to get indies onto PS4:http://gamasutra.com/view/news/18927...s_onto_PS4.php

GDC Wrap-up: Indie Developers Choose PS4, PS3, PS Vita:http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/...4-ps3-ps-vita/

http://www.edge-online.com/news/why-...-to-ps4-first/

"I've had a bad time working with Microsoft in the past," he continued. "Maybe not super bad, but a moderately bad time in terms of business relationships. Other developers who are friends of mine have had a horrible time, so the idea of signing up again with Microsoft isn't something I'd have ruled out, but there's a certain amount of dread I have about doing that again. I don't have that with Sony. Who knows, maybe it'll turn out to be just as bad at the end! But I don't think so. The people we're talking to on a daily basis there are just really good people, and we're happy to work with them. We'll see how it goes."
And there's always been the horror stories of Microsoft's approval process and how much they charge just to patch games - $40,000.

On another front: Nintendo has been getting a ton of praise from Indie devs too.

A console monopoly for a generation is less problematic because of competition from smartphones and PCs, but it's way too earlier to be saying that xbox720 is dead on arrival.
yeah. Nintendo had a monopoly on handheld gaming for basically forever.
That didn't exactly create a bad situation for gamers.

They did it by being better and cheaper. (Gameboy itself was weak tech in terms of graphics, for a long time. 4 greens vs gamegear. lol. but completely trumped in batterylife. Which the public deemed more desirable.)
Then Advance, and ds, DSi, came around.

Also, a lot of games will still let you load them even if you are offline. There are a few that won't, but the majority of them can be launched from their own icon without the steam client in the event of an outage.

The way microsoft is doing things, that won't even be an *option*. Hell, even Origin has retarded issues - not online? It can't tell if you actually have DLC for specific games and thus, you can't play the DLC while offline.

I'd really like that to NOT be the majority of games.
I just really hope there is some sort of offline functionality. I'm all for online integration and everything, but if is just a brick if its not connected then I sure wont be buying one. I really can't see this happening, but you never know... I'll get the ranch dressing out if I have to eat up a heaping dish of crow...

A lot of people are misunderstanding Microsoft's intentions here. They are banking on non-gamers to buy the console as a non-game media consumption device. Basically the device isn't focused on just selling games it is focused also on selling music, movies, and TV. In that light the always on DRM and locked down nature of the console makes sense since the media companies love DRM because it gives them control.

Is this a smart strategy? I don't think so personally. I like Sony's much better since it is focusing on the games and developers which means the media consumption apps will come regardless. Plus games are becoming the entertainment form of choice for a huge swath of the developed world so it isn't a niche market but a big and growing one. Thus based on what information we have so far I think Sony has the better long term vision.

A $400 (or whatever) media consumption device aka a 'music, tv, movie and internet selection device that can also play AAA games' that people don't want to use to play AAA games seems like a dumb idea.

I agree. I don't see a way to market a 500 dollar "Living Room Entertainment Device That Also Plays Games" in the age of $99.99 Roku/Apple TV's and Ipads/Tablets. I still think we are missing something huge with all the rumors going around. Because right now, if we go strictly on rumors it sounds like a device destined to fail. Not everyone likes/agrees with Microsoft, but you cant say they are a dumb company.

And you know all that media crap that Microsoft does? Sony doesevery single bit of it too. Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, whatever your streaming media poison is, they have it too (and their apps for them are usuallybetter). Plus, unlike Microsoft, they don't charge you to use it. The PS3 also works as a great media server and the PS4 is going to have that amazing Game Streaming service built right into it which is a pretty huge thing. Easily streaming the games you play and being able to easily capture your own gameplay footage is going to be awesome.
Only a Sony Homer would say this. For one, PS3 doesn't have it too, there is no HBOGo app, no ESPN360, no Vevo(you probably haven't tried this, but seeded music video playlists are awesome). For two, the 360s UI experience is far superior.

Non-gamers don't need to spend $500 on a media device, especially when much cheaper devices (hell, if rumors are to be believed, including a $99 version of the 360) will do the same.

MS intends on putting out a new machine and not eating a large percentage of the cost doing so. Both MS and Sony have albatrosses around their neck (Kinect2 and GDDR5, respectively) that will want them to put new systems out for more than consumers would like. There's no conspiracy or market confusion here, just consumers too naive about how much systems not sold at a deep loss will cost.

I think budgets are going to belessof an issue this next generation.
The development costs for the raw coding itself will drop/stay much the same, but the cost of graphics and so on are going to be through the roof. Two or three years post-launch, expect to see awholebunch of publishers & developers that aren't EA/Activision go bust and/or justgive upon console games (and I'm not exactly sure about EA, for that matter).

Hope you like Call of Duty!

The gaming development community should embrace open-source art and just reuse and contribute assets like programmers do, lol.

These are the biggest reasons I'd stick with Microsoft regardless of always online requirements, which really don't bother me as much as they seem to be bothering almost everyone else in this thread.

Plus, they're reportedly having much more closed off hardware access that's very API restricted that's likely to cause at least a bit of performance loss in multiplatform games (especially with a less powerful GPU).
To be honest, I think microsoft has the right idea here - not all that surprising given they have many years of experience with what giving developers low level hardware access leads to. Sure it can get better performance, but it also opens up the doors for devs to fuck up and totally crash the entire pc/device, which makes the device maker look incompetent, not the developer.

Is it possible that the Xbox 720 launches like a tablet does, and has Wifi/network connections, but also a 4G/3G service? That would tie it into a subscription service just like a cell phone, allowing them to actually market a ~$600 piece of hardware and get it in consumers hands for $199 or less. I know there has been a lot of talk about a "subscription" discounted XBOX this time around, why couldn't that include a data plan? That would be the end of people complaining about "always on". When was the last time you were in someones home or a hotel room or whatever that didn't have Wifi or a 3G/4G signal?
Let me tell you about wireless data in Canada...

More rumors and speculation on Xbox 720's always on internet connection required. Will be interesting to see, but at this point with all the sources saying the same thing and fairly close to announcement, it looks to be true.

I will not be purchasing the device. It really has come full circle at this point, unless there is just a * MUST HAVE * exclusive. I will be leaning more toward a PS4 this time around if I buy a console at all. I am leaning more towards getting rid of consoles entirely in my house with this next gen and just upgrading my PC for Steam games, which all work just as well with a controller anyhow.

Really the only thing differentiating my consoles and PC at this point is the friends list. That can easily be transferred to my Steam friends.

were there details released for the cert/appectance/patching/restrictions/etc for the ps4 for indie games? or is this just people complaining how bad ms is.
my guess is that with windowsblue/sp update/8.1/blahblah apps will become cross platform (phone/pc/xbox); eventually those games will end up on there too unless they can afford not to out of principle.
i'm actually suprized that ms/sony didn't both vow/collude to only have onlineallthetime to thwart piracy and to appeal to game companies. maybe it'll have an offline mode like steam and this is all being overplayed.
so far i'm not hearing any specifics and hyper reactions.
