It's fucking horseshit that you can't play most PS3 games on the new console. I understand that the systems use different architecture, but why not make all ps3 games available for download? Naughty Dog's releasing the DLC for The Last of Us on ps4 doesn't make sense under those circumstances.
It would be a massive undertaking to make all PS3 games available for download. That shit just isn't going to happen, there's way too much work involved. You might see more "Definitive Editions" (the new HD Remasters) re-released on the PS4 though on a case by case basis.

And uh, I don't see anything about that TLoU DLC being released on the PS4 besides some people speculating crap.

Well games on PC would be significantly easier to move to PS4. However, PS3 exclusives, would be difficult and likely not worth the effort.

Tomb raider was good. Don't think I'd play it again though.

Oblivion was also excellent, minus the leveling SNAFU. Fortunately there were mods that fixed that or you could just take all secondary skills as primary and be a walking god. Either way, without modification, that was the dumbest leveling system of any ES game.

It can't be that hard for them to whip up some software emulator into the OS to make systems backwards compatible. If PC's can do it so easily, there's no fucking reason consoles can't.

PCs can't do it "so easily." Do you see arealworking PS3 emulator anywhere? No, you don't.

Yeah, anything with a PC build is super easy to port. It took people a matter of weeks, not even a month, to get PS4 versions up and running on most of the multiplatform games that have been released. So like I said, we might see a lot of "Definitive Editions" coming to the PS4 and Xbone.

We're probably not going to see many, if any, PS3 only games ported though. Definitely not all the little JRPGs and such because those developers just don't have the resources to do it. Wemightsee some of the Sony First Party games ported at some point, but right now all of their teams are working on new games and they likely do not want to spin anyone off to do "HD Remasters" right now. That shit is going to require way the hell more work than multiplatform games and full teams to make it happen if it's a game like The Last of Us or Uncharted.

I really do hope that we see Rockstar do a "Definitive Edition" of Red Dead Redemption though, since I still haven't played it!

unfortunately one of the RDR devs posted a while back on reddit and said the game code and assets are a total mess and almost nobody who worked on it still works there, which is why it'll never get ported to PC. It'll be easier for them to just make a sequel from scratch, which is a bummer because I never played it either and don't have a 360 or ps3 anymore. at least with gaiki i can play it, TLOU, and any other ps3 games i missed.

I'm not usually one to buy into the re-release cash grab.... but I will admit I would love to play a HD Gow3 at 60fps. I actually might have considered getting a PS4 if a HD GoW bundle pack was part of the starting lineup....

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. (I said that outloud and held down the A key until I stopped, that was seriously my reaction.)

Hopefully Rockstar does make another RDR game then.

I'm reading that they're implementing a streaming service so maybe most games will become available. Still, backwards compatibility should be a standard feature these days.

If not for how utterly retardedly specialized the PS3 was constructed it probably would be. It really cannot be understated just how insane that crap was to work on for people. If you listen to Cerny talk about the PS3's development it's just some nutty shit. The engineers went and made the fucking thing in a bubble with no input from the Software guys what so ever and some seriously fucked up shit went on. To get anything running on it at all to begin with pretty much gave the OS guys nightmares.

Technical issues aside, probably won't be most PS3 games because Sony will probably have to negotiate redistribution for all of them. Another reason we'll end up paying per title once Gaikai is available IMO, even if we have the disc in our hand.

It is actually quite difficult. N64, which was not a particularly complicated piece of hardware, had odd pause bugs in many games in different emulators for a couple of years after stability was otherwise achieved. Emulation isn't easy. The PS3's architecture would be extremely difficult to emulate. It'll probably be at least six years before we get an emulator for PS3, if ever, that'll play games. A lot of the people who code emulators looked at the architecture and went on to do something else, like PSP emulation.

Actually given the PS4 is using x86 architecture, there is a very real possibility there will be a PS4 emulator before there is a PS3 one.

Gaikai will theoretically be doing this down the line once it's active.

(And on a side note - due to the PS3 > PS4 conversion I did on AC4 bugging out at one point since my cat decided to disconnect the router mid-download on the "upgrade file" I did get to see that even when it can't identify a disc it still knows it's a PS3 disc from reading the headers I guess [Gave me a "This PS3 Cannot CURRENTLY be run" message on it] - I'm getting the feeling Gaikai will allow streaming of games they have up on it AFTER A DISC CHECK as one of the options - not just PSN owned copies like I'd have assumed most likely before the bug)

Maybe a few dollars, as stated with my AC4 router crashing mid DL bug it has a function to ID the headers as a PS3 disc - so they definitely want it to be able to ID if it's a PS3 disc for some reason - seems useless to not just have it look for just the specific 6-7 headers for the PS3 -> PS4 titles and then label them as "PS3 Headers" instead of generic ones if they're just doing it for the PS3 > PS4 program.

Because there is a nostalgia market they want to cash in on.

You do realize that downloading the game to your PS4 would not make them play right? They have to be completely recoded.
Oh bullshit. It's emulation and always has been. And it's easy to do. But why offer that for free when you have a streaming service you can charge for.

PS2 games are $9.99 on PSN, and those are just 1-time downloads you don't cost Sony money to play by using their bandwidth every time you want to fire them up. I wouldn't be surprised if Gaikai'd PS3 games are $10-15, collections for $20+, and they don't offer discounts/free games by owning the discs so that you're paying Sony instead of Gamestop to add to your PS4 library.

Dunno, they were REALLY buddy buddy with Gamestop over guaranteeing used games continue. They might want those dollars but Gamestop continuing to promote them and such probably outweighs the extra handful of licensing dollars.

Regardless the functionality clearly is there IF THEY WANT TO use it.

And PS+ is clearly going to be mandatory for Gaikai, so it's not like you're paying them for the bandwidth vs. PSN titles.
