For the PS3? Of course there is. They wanted to keep the consoles pricing lower, and they can't really emulate PS3. It needs a whole set of hardware, and adding that to the console is $$ (similar to how early PS3's had hardware for disk versions of PS1 and 2 games which was eliminated in later versions).

Meanwhile, that cost still existed when the PS3 and Xbox 360 both shipped with Backwards compatibility active. And while the PS3 was a much higher price point, it also had Blu-ray and a new cell CPU structure. The 360 still shipped at normal launch price levels.

It isn't hard to do. They just see a market for it. And with more digital games/streaming available, much more so than in 2005, charging 9 bucks for a game makes sense - Christ, look at Nintendo.

Stood outside yesterday in line at BB, in 22 degree weather with sweatpants and a jacket (was just going to recon the store at 7:15 - nope had to jump out of the car and run to the line), and nearly froze to death / peed my pants, but got one of 45 PS4's they had in stock! Out of the nearly 50 people in line, only 2-3 were waiting for the Xbone. Having both the Xbone and the PS4, I can already see that it is going to be the opposite of last gen for me - PS4 for ALL cross platforms, Xbone for exclusives. Dat 1080p. Already not missing the kinect. The PS4 UI / PS Store may not have bells and whistles, but it justworks. So glad I got it.

What makes sense is selling the PS3 at $99-$150 + games for the next 5 yrs.

This - for what they would have to add to the price of the PS4 I would think it makes more sense to go the route they did. And while there is a market for backwards compatibility (I'd love it) - I doubt it's a profitable market.

I just wanted to quote this so we can reflect upon it when Ut posts, "LOL JUST TROLLIN' GUYZ!@#!" in a few pages.

I don't think you understand how experienced and educated utnayan is. He is friends with all mmo developers, and knows the ins and outs of making an mmo and what goes wrong during the process that 100s of actual developers cant figure out. He's a master economist who can accurately predict console trends, advise everyone how bad it will be at launch, but then reverse it and buy one himself. And he's also a hardware specialist, with complete understanding of costs and the manufacturing process. Also he has amazing eyesight to tell the difference in graphics on grainy 360p YouTube videos.

Yeah and they had to sell both consoles at a huge loss because of it. One of Sony's goals this generation was to make a more affordable console - for the consumer and themselves. Sony is not in the greatest financial health and Microsoft's gaming division has never made money.

/\ Because of bloat and cost structure. What did Microsoft waste on trying to R&D a new controller? $100 million?

They still have to keep manufacturing ramped, parts in stock, manage that inventory to efficiency levels, and grow their PS4 player base. It makes way more sense for them to pull that into a software model, virtualize and emulate those titles on the shop, and sell them at a hugely discounted rate while growing the install without a customer buying two devices.

Yet, aside from possibly the Wii U, Nintendo consoles have had backwards compatibility with GameCube and Wii, and now Wii U and the Wii channel. Completely different systems between the generation, and they were (Wii and Gamecube were) selling for profits off the get go.

This isn't hard folks. I have no idea why you would think otherwise. It's a matter of convenience and marketing.

Comparing the current Nintendo consoles to the PS4 and Xbone is absurd. The PS4 and XBone are an order of magnitude more powerful. Ill settle for no backwards compatibility for cur-gen tech.

Utnayan, since emulation/porting is so easy you should write a PS3 emulator instead of talking out your ass all day.

I am comparing the two simply because cost was not a problem for backwards compatibility since the Gamecube. Obviously next gen is more powerful now. But exponentially it's the same as the technology grew anyway. I'm just debating the point that people think this is a cost issue. It's a marketability issue.

I think I just got trolled.

By the way, what I have been saying is exactly what Sony is doing.

The PS4 isn't back compatible with PlayStation3 games, nor will digital purchases made for the PS3 be available on PS4 consoles at launch.Sony's cloud gaming service Gaikai will allow gamers to stream PS3 titles from the cloud next year.

If you aren't willing to admit that adding backwards compatibility to the PS4 would cost money, then you aren't debating anything. You are simply trolling.

It only takes very basic knowledge of programming to understand that emulation takes much greater hardware than the hardware it is emulating. The PS3 especially would be a huge mess to emulate. What about this do you not understand?

Yet this guy does it as a side project without any resources.

REDACTED VIRUS SITE

If they wanted to, they could easily do it. Since they have a streaming service that will be a separate subscription fee, it will hurt sales of Galkai. What about this doyounot understand? Quit trying to pigeon hole an argument here by scapegoating cost. It's never been about cost. It's been about internal opportunity cost comparable to competing internal offerings. The streaming service aims to be a big portion of revenue for Sony. But to think it's because it's going to be a pain in the ass is hilariously wrong. One solution makes them more money. One doesn't. Pretty fucking easy to understand.
