MS needs to be upfront about this shit. It's just hurting them in the long run, especially if they plan to make a BIG announcement at E3 this year while leading all these other thoughts/comments run rampant.
1) MS hired the guys they usually go through to produce an announcement event for them in April, later delayed to May. (That delay may not be due to any difficulties with the product, but venue availability in April, etc.) So they aren't planning on sitting until E3.

2) Those bad news details are generally the things you don't find out about until near launch, if not at. Think about how many Wii U issues weren't known until the thing was out in the wild.

As for Orth, he was probably fired for revealing bits about the project before its announcement (go back and hear the verbal gymnastics people had to go through at GDC, as they couldn't publicly admit the system exists), not his attitude. (Though comments amounting to "Why would anyone live in your shithole" rarely turn out well.)

Edit: If you skip MS, you only miss Halo, Fable, Forza, and Alan Wake for traditional games.

For XBLA-type projects, which I again repeat will take up more and more of your gaming diet, you miss a whole lot more, AND MS has a history of moneyhatting exclusivity periods. The biggest battleground this time around will be in behind the scenes negotiations via Pub Funds, Exclusivity Windows, etc. in the downloadable space.

yeah could have been let go for either breaking NDA by implying a "feature". Or, I'm sure there was a "conduct befitting the company" in social media, etc clause. Doing something that reflects negatively on the company, especially while representing the company is grounds for dismissal in most larger companies.

As stupid as his words, I admit, a bit disappointed if he did lose his job over it.

Agree with everything you said. I do think Alan Wake was eventually release on PC so that list is 1/4 smaller

I've skipped Arcade entirely except for Bastion. Cute but I have a hard time finding things i like on arcade.

The fact that this chimp had a job (even if it was customer service stooge) says all I need to know. Clear that they don't respect their customer,
I think its funny you think this is specific to one corporation. Should of stuck with the first reason, at least that makes sense.

1) Always-on connectivity is indeed part of the next Xbox, and it was interesting to see this guy confirm that unofficially.

2) He could have been more tactful, but let?s face it, people are way too sensitive online.

3) The biggest issue here, frankly, was the cyberbullying that occurred in the wake of Orth?s comments. Those sensitive people aren?t so sensitive when it comes to other people, that?s for sure. In fact, that?s my exact definition of a bully.
4) Microsoft is only upset about the way this feature was communicated, because it likes to present this kind of thing has a positive, not a negative.
More to the point, I think that an always-on Xbox is directly in keeping with Microsoft?s strategy for all next-generation platforms, including Windows Phone (all versions) and Windows 8/RT, which are designed to work as if you are simply connected all the time. Yes, they do work offline, of course. But the apps platform on these systems?which will be replicated on the Windows 8-based next Xbox?assumes a connection. Microsoft?s new platforms are integrated conduits for online services.
Let?s see what Microsoft has to say about the next Xbox, first in a late May launch event, and then later at both E3 and BUILD 2013, before we make up our minds. Let?s not let one ill-conceived comment ruin what?s going to be an awesome year for Xbox. And yes, it really is going to be awesome.
Paul Thurrott knows his shit when it comes to MS stuff.

If I pick up a console this upcoming generation it will only be a PS4. Haven't purchased a Sony product since the PS2.

Most likely will go PC only gaming from here on out though.

That Paul guy can go ahead and fuck right off whining about the "cyberbullying" of Orth. That twat got exactly what his comments deserved.

While I think his way of handling it was completely wrong, I do not agree with all the vile and outrage directed at him. Too many people on the Internet just want to pile on the hate and rage at whatever target they don't agree with. It is getting out of hand.

If the online functionality of the next Xbox brings some cool new stuff to the table, awesome. If it ends up just shitting all over us with no benefits that outweigh the negatives, then fuck it I won't buy it. But nerd raging about it is just wrong. They have a vision of what they want to do. If that vision doesn't fit your needs, don't buy the damn thing. No matter what people think, they aren't doing it just to screw you.

Having product requirements to support a set of online features is one thing and while it's kinect-level useless to me I don't really care. If I just have to deal with the 'you're not connected, would you like to not give a fuck?' dialog isn't a big deal to me. Whether it's that or simcity/diablo3 style probably won't be known until announcement.

Oh please, their only "vision" is to fuck the consumer over. There is absolutely nothing that Always Online does for the consumer and it is purely a corporate greed thing. It's draconian DRM that won't give us any benefit what so ever, only inconvenience us, while giving them some idiotically perceived sense of security and control to combat piracy and track consumer habits for targeted advertising.

Fuck you for apologizing for them. There is absolutelynothingwrong with the internet getting pissed off about the very notion that they would put this in and every single person saying that this is a deal breaker in buying an X720 has the right to tell them to fuck off and that they won't get their money.

Pretty much this. I sat out for the 360/PS3 generation, but I am planning on buying a console this time around. It won't be the Xbox if the always-online thing stands.

I don't buy PC games that require a constant internet connection (barring games where it's necessary like MMOs), and I sure as hell won't buy a console that requires it for every single game.

Of course every company has idiot douchenozzles - but this one happened to be highly visible, and highly desperate for attention. I don't see anyone from Sony doing this - hence why its a big deal. It's definitely a defensible reason to not by a product. If I as a business owner went to a lunch meeting, expo, etc and encountered someone like that - I'd politely pick up the tab and never do business with that company again. You're only as strong in business as your most visible employees - which is why you never put someone like that in a position of attention - why I am ALWAYs the one to attend the expos, lunches, etc. I don't trust anyone else to put off a great face, something necessary in business.

That's the only logical conclusion one can draw from "Always Online" based on what it does for the consumer Vs. what it does for the company.

Plus, fuck "visions." Anyone who has ever pulled out that word in the history of gaming has been completely full of shit. It was even included in the recent SimCity debacle. Sure, MS themselves haven't used it here (yet), but that asshole defending them that I responded to did.
