He happened to describe exactly what happens if you take current Xbox Live digital content to someone's house like a game or Rock Band DLC actually, did that a few times this gen. Since you're not on the console that owns the content, the user who purchased it has to be signed in.
Yeah, I wasn't talking about bringing games to a friends house I was talking about leaving games there for a few days.
I stopped doing that shortly after high school cause I got tired of giving away all my games.

Yeah now but think about the kids.

My kids are 12 and they all get together when new games come out and plan their purchases with week long trades in mind.

the used game thing is huge imo , gamestop's stock dropped 8% most of that drop occuring just AFTER the used game thing was announced.

if the ps4 follows the xbox ones install/used game fee/activation gamestop is in a world of hurt profitablity wise for the next couple of years and may die.

PS4's advantage is significantly faster IO between the CPU and RAM
I have not really kept up with the specs, but I assume that the CPU and GPU will be sharing memory on both consoles. And if that is the case it seems likely that the biggest gain for the PS4 from extra memory bandwidth will graphics performance.

Meanwhile for all we know the PS4's BC could simply be re-buying titles you stream from PSN, have similar used game restrictions, and their version of kinect ends up being required and is always on?

Personally I like the idea of not having to put a disc in the drive, wish it happened years ago with physical purchases. The ability to give the disc to a friend for them to purchase the game to play with me is pretty cool, as is the ability to delete an installed retail game and just redownload it if my license is still active. My concerns lie more with the horsepower differences between the consoles. As long as that doesn't end up actually being a huge deal before launch and whatever the DRM shakes out to be isn't super obtrusive (online checkins, whatever) they had me at HDMI passthrough. Secondary to that, the features and price of the subscriptions both consoles offer will factor in.
Not buying the PS4 either. I just upgraded my PC, happy with steam etc. Same deal, I just dont believe in spending money on games I have already bought, or keeping two different devices that really do the same thing. Not to mention I already have a PS3 which is mainly (only) being used as a BluRay player currently. If I had hair, it would have not been blown back by the "next gen" consoles. Probably just sticking with the PC, maybe I will catch on the next next gen wave when my son is around 11/12 and wants one.

The more information that comes out, the more I think I will just stick with PC. I might get that OUYA though.

I also think you guys are focusing on the wrong shit when it comes to the must authenticate once in 24 hours stuff. The big news is how much they kept saying " CLOUD" during that presentation. Sounds like developers can make the games they make online only simply because they need to be able to connect to the cloud to run. Or whatever bullshit they will tell us.

Get used to it, hipster faggots. Digital is the way of the future. Physical media is dying.
Problem is they don't handle the digital like they should. IE steam for example. I would not mind completely forgoing my physical media if it meant I could download the digital copies to the next gen consoles.

I worked for Gamestop for 8 years, much of that in management, and still have a lot of friends there. District managers, store managers, etc. They are all jumping ship ASAP. Some already saw the writing on the wall when these rumours started circulating in the last couple years, and almost all of them are actively interviewing for other jobs as of this moment. Gamestop is going under FAST if both systems end up restricting used games. Used games are the only reason they are in business. They make next to nothing off of hardware and new games, not enough to stay afloat. When I worked for Gamestop(Software Etc/Babbages days) we almost went bankrupt selling just computer software and new games/consoles. Gamestop didn't start being hugely successful until they started focusing on used games. I haven't worked there in almost a decade now, but when I left(PS2/original xbox era) used games accounted for roughly 80% of our profits. Can't imagine that has changed a lot.

I did not use Gamestop as much as I used Gamefly. Gamefly was perfect because the additional (bonus) content was still available when you ordered their used games.

I never went through games fast enough to justify Gamefly, but I have tried Redbox games a few times this year (even kept one... $60... guess im an ideal customer for this MS scheme?). Nothing I'd particularly miss (if anything will prop up the importance for effective demos if not make full game trials more common) but can certainly see the usefulness of both services.

In the end, a lot of us putting as much hope behind the potential as many are putting outrage behind the principle. One has to overcome the other to be successful or determine failure. Hoping things pan out - for both systems.

You never had to be a member to buy used games, just needed to create an account.

I currently use my 360 as a media hub in my living room. I dont play games like i used to, and maybe buy 5-6 new games a year along with a few used games and games that go on sale online or through XBL. After the wife and kids go to bed, i may sit up and game for a few hours, or just randomly browse shit on XBL or whatever. I have no issues paying for XBL, it honestly has some cool stuff on it. I hear that a lot of it isnt available outside of the US so i guess that could be a problem for the overseas market. I also have a PS3 that i use as a bluray player and to play GT5 on, and a gaming PC that rarely gets used.

I guess i am the target audience of the XB1 because i thought it looked pretty cool. The multitasking and quick switching and snap ins looked really sweet. I honestly like the fact that they are going in a different directing and trying to balance the gaming performance with a new approach to entertainment. I am cautiously excited to see how it all comes together and see exactly what they can pull off with all the services and such.

All of the used games/DRM stuff is concerning though, i am just going to approach it with a wait and see attitude and if turns out to be too draconian and hard to live with then i simply wont buy it. I do see why they are going this way though, and i'm sure that it is going to be a sore point for a lot of people. Steam ended up working out ok on the PC side, i just hope this ends up the same.

Now the PS4... I really don't know where i stand on this. I love the fact that it more powerful, but im really curious how that will play out in the real world. I really dislike the interface/UI design on my PS3, and it seems like every time i turn it on i have to patch something. I hear that is not going to be an issue with the PS4. Sony seems to be focusing on the games and sharing/streaming/facebook integration. I guess im old because the idea of sharing or streaming gameplay videos does not interest me in the least. So that just leaves it to the games. Are the games going to be dramatically better than they are on the XB1? If they are, that may interest me but at the same time i think that the PC is going to look even better so i dont know. I guess it will depend on if there are any PS4 exclusives that i really want to play. With GT6 coming on the PS3 it may be a while before i feel like picking one up. Unless the multiplats really are THAT much better on the PS4.

Ok, im done rambling. I wonder which strategy is going to pay off in the end? games/multimedia/entertainment with a focus on multitasking and UI/Kinect integration, or better looking games and sharing/social media?

I am thinking the North American focused media box that plays games may be a more profitable approach in the end.

i think people are disappointed by the lack of hardware demonstrations and video game content. they made the multipurpose functionality and call of dusty the focus of the presentation and it came across as old-hat. again, who gives a flying fuck if you can watch tv on it? the xbox 360 can do that.

So far my $500-600 console budget is going towards updating my PC. We'll see what they keep saying about the xbox as news apparently seems to continue to trickle out like urine through an erection.

speed wise, just by going what i read one vs ps4 on anandtech

both have 8gig ram
one devs have access to only 5gig, ps4 7 gig.
mem type, one 2133mhz ddr3 ps4 5500mhz gddr5
cpu is a wash-they are reportedly using the same cpu's at reportedly the same speed- both are x86 based chips.
gpu wise - peak performance 1.23tflops for the one 1.84tflops for the ps4

system mem bandwidth is where the differences really come into play

one- 68.3gig per second, ps4 176gig per second- memory bandwidth wise the ps4 is almost 3x faster.
