Cracked - '5 things game company gets wrong about gamers'

Good article.

Guardian - 'Xbox One and Microsoft's shocking discovery: gamers aren't data'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...e-microsoft-e3

Another good article.

So what has been the thinking behind this controversial proposition, and why is Microsoft so keen to highlight the wider entertainment functionality of its system? "Microsoft has a corporate desire to own the living room, first identified in the mid-90s: it is not addressing consumers' needs but Microsoft's desires," says analyst and author Nicholas Lovell. "Unfortunately, leaving aside the PR difficulties here, the fundamental strategy is flawed. When the original Xbox was launched, there were three contenders to control the media experience: set-top-box, PC, console. Now there are two more - smartphone and tablet - and I believe they have already won."

Lovell's argument, which matches much of the strategic thinking coming out of this sector, is that screened entertainment is evolving into a "second screen" model. Every one has a primary screen - a tablet or a smartphone - which is personal to them, but each household also has a single shared screen - the TV. "In time, the first screen will control the shared screen with no need for a separate box," says Lovell. He sees a near future in which elements such as access to video-on-demand and live television services are rendered through personal subscriptions on the primary screens, so we won't need fixed set-top boxes sitting beneath our televisions. And there's no space for Xbox One in this scenario.
I whole-heartedly agree with this guy.

"in a broader set community, people don't pay attention to the details" So... they can trick those people into buying their system?
This is what is equally ridiculous. In a broader set community, people pay attention to Twitter, Facebook, even fucking CNN that is running these stories. MS seems to think that E3 is some isolated community with no contact to the outside world.

Uh. My 11 year old cousin and his little buddies have already latched on to PS4 and he knows fuckall about E3. I'm posting these articles to my fb and most of my family and tech illiterate "madden only please" friends have already picked up on it. The technophiles were already screaming "steambox". MS has created a perfect shitstorm tha eradicated the goodwill from a beloved console in the 360. It had been my favorite since the SNES

Yeah I think MS is sorta oblivious to how far this bad press is spreading, hell even one of our major newspapers are running a "Dont have internet? Buy an Xbox 360" with snarky and sarcastic quotes from their forums. Even the non-gamers will see the bad press and fast.

That cracked article was really, really interesting - the 100m people in the US with the connection that MS suggests for the XB1 is pretty staggering. As well as the console prices adjusted for inflation link they provided:

http://www.gamesetwatch.com/console-...e-relative.png

To big to link inline so gotta follow it - but in short PS3's launch and XB1 with inflation are damn close - without the extra nickel and diming that XBox is known for factored in yet. And PS4 is damn cheap historically speaking.

And as we're seeing, other smart phone companies caught on and are making a better product and people are actually buying them. The difference here is Apple had the market cornered with its product, MS assumed it did.

If Microsoft honestly assumed that, then they are the dumbest people on Earth. Windows phone is a relative flop, Surface tablets are a relative flop, what new hardware have they released in recent years that has been even remotely successful, much less dominant in its market, that made them think that people would just buy anything with the Microsoft name on it?

I'm rather enjoying this thread:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=586406

Summary: If you purchase an Xbone outside of the 21 countries listed, it won't work. You cannot authenticate games because there is an IP lock.

Kinda amusing that Poland is not on the list of countries, but they are making such a big deal over the Witcher 3, which is being made by a Polish company.

Most of the graphical upgrades for this generation of gaming are going to be things like better lighting and physics. There's only so much you can do with polygons and textures that makes a visible difference when you are limited to a 1080p resolution on TVs.
You're so so very wrong. We're going to see huge jumps in visual quality this generation texture wise because most current console games use dogshit, terrible textures that are forced through 512mb of ram and almost no games actually run at 1080p. Almost all of them are weird variants between 540p and 720p and there's been dick all that's truly been HD. Even the few games that do really render at 1080p use pretty shitty textures too though since there's only so much you can do with the current systems.

Just look at any game that gets a real High Resolution Texture Pack on the PC - the difference is *astounding*. This is going to greatly benefit PCs as well because now everything will be made with high resolution textures and you won't have to pray for the company to release a texture pack or hope someone mods the fuck out of it.

Sure, a high-rez texture pack makes a huge difference when I'm playing Skyrim at 1080P on a 27" monitor sitting 2 feet in front of it. Not so much on a 50" TV 10 feet away. It might help a little bit, but it won't be some night and day difference that most people will notice while playing on their living room TV at a normal viewing distance. The problem is, 1080p on 40+ inch devices just isn't that great, there's a lot of blurring there at such a low PPI(especially when compared to gaming on a PC)

If you're 10 feet away from a 50" TV you're a few feet too far away, fyi. And regardless, it will make a difference dude. It really is night and day.

I saw the GDDR3 the xbone has is tech from 2004.

Thats some ancient shit back there.

I know making a console takes a lot of time, but 9 year old hardware?

"future proof" for sure. If you're living in '95.

We'll have to agree to disagree. As a primarily PC gamer, 1080p TVs look like crap to me, no amount of higher resolution textures are going to change that. My 720p/1080i HDTV looked awesome back in 2001 when I first bought one, compared to the 1024x768 computer monitors that were pretty standard at that time. 1080p is showing it's age over a decade later now, and there's really nothing these consoles can do about that. Of course, your average person that only games on a console is blissfully unaware and perfectly happy with it. Hell, nowadays 1080p looks pretty bad on a PC on anything over 24" or so, much less a 50+ inch TV.

So because you think 1080p looks like crap, you can't tell the difference between something even worse? WTF kind of logic is that?

Yeah, 1080p isn't going to look as good as shit on your PC, but it sure as shit is going to look alot better than the stuff going out to your console now. We are comparing previous-gen to next-gen consoles, not fucking best PC graphics.

How good resolutions look is 100% a factor of how close you are to the screens showing them. No fucking duh your 27" monitor pushing 2560x1440 is going to look great at 18 inches away.
