Yep, I am super super excited. I cannot fucking wait to sail around and do Pirate Shit.
Same here. Hopefully they've found a way to make the excellent platform of ship fighting gameplay have more depth and to add more gameplay impacting ways to spend money. The AC games in general and AC3 specifically suffer from giving you everything you need to beat the game and making the money only useful to buy money generators. You were constantly needing more money to buy assets and once you buy them all (Or get tired of buying them) you instantly had more money than you needed.

Frankly I hope they don't even have money generating assets to purchase and force you to do fun things to generate money. I've always been advocating a return to roots for the AC franchise. Any time in AC4 I'm not: assasinating something, climbing something, watching a cutscene or sailing is wasted time.

It's hard to tell from the uneven recordings we have of BF4, but so far the evidence is pointed to the difference not being massive.
Higher Resolution, more stable framerate, and some extra effects (Ambient Occlusion here) is "massive" to me personally. Though "significant" is probably a lot better word to use here than massive.

That's really probably going to be the norm. 900-1080p (1080p will probably be the average), more stable framerate, and some extra sparkles Vs 720-900p. I don't think anyone expects anything really spectacular out of this hardware and generally stuff will look about like "high" PC settings. None of this should be surprising since we really have known all of the system specs and it's pretty easy to get a vague idea based off the rudimentary aspects of the systems.

Maybe once they get more familiar with the hardware and can get deeper into it PS4 games may look closer to "Ultra" on certain games, but that'll probably be uncommon unless it's super easy to optimize an engine for the PS4's extra stuff. It's really hard to say just how big GPGPU compute will be with game devs and how much they'll use it. Maybe if AMD's stuff takes it'll be huge, but who knows.

I did not see anything about buying stuff that generates money in the previews and videos. The only thing I've seen on regards to that is taking over ships and adding them to your fleet and sending them off to do trade routes to sell goods and make money (that replaces sending assassins off to do missions).

Also I'm pretty sure that money is really important and you need lots of it to upgrade your ship and there's a ton of upgrades.

Video capture problems explained and some other stuff:Editor's blog: Battlefield 4 Face-off Preview Q Eurogamer.net

Wow, it's certainly been a wild and crazy day, with all manner of questions and even accusations floating about concerning our Battlefield 4 coverage. Time to take stock and comprehensively address the queries surrounding our article:

The big question - did Digital Foundry botch its Battlefield 4 captures?

We've now examined Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game and UI/dashboard elements and have concluded that the equipment did exactly what was asked of it - it acquired digital video in a mathematically lossless format at 1080p60, in the full range RGB (0-255) colourspace. Dashboards and control panels were all set accordingly to match the requirements of the equipment. We're now satisfied that the captures on PS4 and PC are exactly as they should be - digitally lossless transmissions of what came out of the hardware.

So what's going on with Xbox One?

Xbox One was also acquired at full range 0-255 RGB with the dash set accordingly, in line with the other versions - exactly how we approach every Face-Off. We have now had informal confirmation from a very good source that current Xbox One hardware has issues with full-range RGB output that are not present on either PC or PS4. We asked DICE for comment and were told that they are "investigating the video output range and settings for Xbox One".

Is this the result of you processing the footage to make it look better compared to PlayStation 4?

Um, you don't make a game look better by crushing subtle detail. The lowering of dynamic range like this physically can't make a game look better - it can only look worse. The only regret here is that the drive for the best possible assets has resulted in captures that do not fully represent how DICE wants the game to be played.

Why isn't anyone else's footage from the same event showing the crushed blacks?

EA provided Elgato Game Capture HD consumer-level devices at the Stockholm event. They're great little units but they are unsuitable for DF work because they cannot acquire 1080p at 60 frames per second and they do not provide lossless video. The reason they do not show crushed blacks on Xbox One is because they operate at limited range RGB (16-235) and the XO dashes were set accordingly. We are told that the current Xbox One appears to be fine operating in limited range RGB, so this is a good match for the unit. We also know that both PS4 and XO hardware at the EA event was set by default to limited range RGB, so other attendees were good to go straight off the bat while we had to make changes to suit our more specialised equipment.

Does the Xbox One issue change any of your observations about Battlefield 4?

No, though we would like to see how the apparent sharpening of detail looks in the proper colourspace. The only change - which we have made already - is the comment from DICE's Johan Andersson that ambient occlusion (missing in the XO review build we tested) will be present in the game you play at launch, using the same algorithm as the PS4 and PC versions.

Did a Digital Foundry employee admit that you botched the captures?

New freelancer John Linneman made comments online suggesting that the workflow was in error and that there wasn't time to correct it. We love John, but he wasn't privy to the workflow of last week's events, nor involved in any of the internal discussions we had. While his heart was in the right place, his post doesn't accurately reflect the facts as they stand and they are certainly not official comment from Digital Foundry.

If you are sitting on 3TB of 1080p60 video, will we see any of it?

Yes.
Basically, the color ranges didn't play nice with DF's personal equipment since currently the Xbone hardware has problems with Full Range 0-255 RGB, but they have a bunch of high quality 1080p60 video that they're sitting on and going to release. Most videos from people from other stuff I've read are 720p30 (maybe 720p60) and the reason it's harder to see the differences.

Yeah sending assassins around got old really fast since it was just clicking shit in a user interface instead of playing a game. Hopefully that tedium only takes a few seconds between missions.

There's footage of it in the GT review, there's some turn-based combat for the ships you send on routes.

Yeah a large map turn based strategy where you get moves between missions / events sounds good if they implement it well and have actual gameplay with a chance of failure.

Can someone give me the tl;dr version of which console I should be looking at given that I'm only a casual game player at this point, and really want a next gen system as a media server and so forth? I run Plex right now, and I don't think either of them is going to be a good substitute for that, but I'm about to need a replacement for my streaming laptop soon anyway.

I'm not sure anyone knows at this point. Neither company is rushing to tell you how awesome their boxes will be at playing your pirated movies, for obvious reasons. For legal content, both consoles will probably run Netflix (they did last gen) and similar apps. I doubt any of the platforms will run iTunes. Both consoles have Bluray.

Xbox was arguably best for pirated content last gen due to XBMC, but PS3 worked fine and dandy as well, just didn't have the same handy UI. For legal content it was probably in PS3's advantage, due to not requiring a Live subscription to use Netflix, as well as Bluray.

Considering the XBOne has been marketed heavily on its TV interaction, I'd probably say that's your best bet if you're buying one now. If I were you I'd just wait and see a few months, though. One system may emerge as the clear winner in that category.

If you have friends getting either system, get that one.

Other than that it comes down to exclusives and Kinect. Kinect gets a lot of abuse, but it's still fun at parties and stuff in the same way the Wii was.

As far as Battlefield 4 footage goes, you really should check out JackFrag's footage; it's superior than anyone else's I've seen, and the PS4 version actually looks really good.

for instance.

1440p for a PS4 video? For shame, should have done it for PC.

Hmm Killzone, knack and BF4 or Assassin's creed. If Amazon doesn't match I may need to cancel my games order through them. Still it looks like some games are going to be released friday so by waiting till friday I may not be able to get killzone, knack and one of the other two.

Apparently Titanfall isn't coming to PS4, ever. Xbox/PC only.
Good. Maybe that will help keep the XBro COD/HALO troglodytes away from the PS4 online community.

Who the hell would play Titanfall on a console anyway? That's like getting to fuck the prom queen and you refusing her when she asks for anal.

Also... Didn't EA say that about Mass Effect? Do they think we're retarded?
