Stop being fucking dense. What the fuck do you think this means?

Sony is also walking the inventory tightrope, trying to make sure that there is enough product in stores for walk-ins throughout the season, but not so much that it creates a perception problem.

It means you can't hype a product as popular if a shit load of them are sitting on shelves. That's why he said perception.
That's the article author summarizing what he thinks House is trying to say in the next paragraph. I disagree with their summary, it seems like he is saying that they want to have consoles in a large number of regions, while not having any severe shortages in those regions.

Well the IGN video that was linked earlier in the thread showed anything but that it's getting better. Was still like 30-40% failure rate, which is about 10times more than what I'd consider acceptable. And he was in a small room alone without apparently no other noise.
He was also using non-release software iirc.

Seems like the author injecting his own thoughts, no?

The public overestimates production management's desire to slightly understock systems to generate hype and vastly understimates how much effort they put in trying to pump out as many consoles as possible in a limited timeframe while not drastically overstocking a certain area.

They've broken the record for consoles selling in a day (right? 1 million is the new record? I don't know), the public doesn't need to see 'PS4 Sold out!' to know it's a hot item.

He was using what they gave him, if they can't provide a working version of one of their main software to "journalists" for testing purposes a week before, I don't think they'll have working ones for release. Yeah yeah maybe it won't be a piece of shit in 2years, doesn't mean shit though because it could still very well be, who knows. But regardless I'm not arguing about the console being worth it or not, however that feature looked like shit and will probably be shit for a while, if not forever(until the xbox zero or whatever other fucking stupid name they come up with).

Yeah, with the Xbone coming this Friday, you can be assured that Sony is doing everything they can to keep supply in-stock.

Especially in a context where the XB1 has supposedly problems to manufacture consoles in big quantities. Sony will try to get as many sells as possible on the back of an XB1 shortage.

The author is pretty much spot on. Perception is everything with these things. People will be able to get them, but they wont ship so many out right away so then can't say "SOLD OUT". It's just basic marketing and I don't blame them for it. To say that they don't take advantage of temp shortages is pretty unrealistic.

"We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they've been loyal to brand for so long," House said. "On the other hand, we're not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we'll be in good supply."

Uh, you quoted the article author, not the guy. The guy didn't say perception.

Edit: Slow response on my part, guess I didn't refresh.

Anyway, House's response sounds much more to me like "We want to make sure all regions have adequate supply" so as not to, for example, push 100% of consoles to North America right this minute simply because it released here first. He specifically says they do NOT want to engender frustration by having a shortage of supply.

Has anyone traded in an old Xbox or PS3 for the $100.00 gift card Best Buy is doing right now? Where do you bring the console? Their customer service counter?
i traded my launch 360 in last sunday. You take it to the customer service counter, which was next to the geek squad and online pickup desks. They hook up the console to a TV and scan the barcode on the back (so make sure its scannable), and require a working controller (wired or wireless) and hard drive in the system. It has to boot, they didn't test a game or anything on mine but just made sure it got to dashboard. Mine hadn't been turned on in 4+ years. Also got 100% bonus on all the games I traded in, really really really old shit like madden 2008, Halo4, Bioshock 2, etc but still got like $40 for 20+ games that I was gonna just donate.

you may have a chance with a completely broken 360/ps3, by doing shit like some random towel trick (?) or maybe getting a chick customer service rep who doesn't give a shit and will just process it. But since the trade in period is almost over you will probably need a working console with power, hdd, working drive, and controller. Some people have said they also check to make sure the warranty seal isnt broken (I guess people who install mod hacks?) but mine didnt, mine was clean anyways.

apparently microsoft and sony are taking back all the old systems and recycling the parts, smart of them to get rid of working old consoles so people have an incentive to buy ps4/xbone. I guess my old xbox was one of the models that woulda been easy to hack and turn into a pirate xbox, but I'd rather have an easy $100 than try to craigslist and meet up with some shady person.

@Abefroman: Isn't he saying the opposite of what you were saying he was saying... or am I confused by this whole topic?

Anyway, as mentioned earlier, every single media outlet in the known universe relaying the fact they sold more than a million units in 24 hours in north america should take care of the 'perception of success' aspect.

They have a short term shortage which is good for them but they will make sure they fill the demand by christmas. Companies do this shit all the time. Don't even understand why it's being debated. Don't be surprised if PS4's show up this Friday.

Hilarious. So if the idea for XB1 having any sort of hardware/software problem is because it was 'rushed too quickly', what the excuse for all the PS4 problems? Not rushed enough? Started development so far ago that power buttons were new technology and hdmi ports weren't standard for TV's?

So far I'm assessing the situation, from what we know as:

PS4: Great hardware, if it works. Fuck your social shit.
XB1: Lesser hardware, but works! Social shit you may or may not like.

I'm not seeing this 3:1 power play bullshit happening.

Friday's a great day for them to load up the shelves with a 100 dollar cheaper console than the console launching that day.

Also a great day to have a big refill for Amazon's warehouses.

Probably not explaining myself well. They could have shipped more but sold out looks really good. They will have enough supply by xmas so they don't lose sales to the bone. All that free press they got with "sold out", idiots paying 1k on ebay and "hot xmas item stories is priceless. Anyway derailed this shit long enough. I want a fucking working PS4.

What problems? My PS4 and all of its features are working perfectly, especially "Social Shit" like Twitch Streaming (which the Xbone won't have until sometime in 2014). There's no hardware issue, a few defective units popped up per normal shit and have been pretty much forgotten, because it wasn't widespread.

No, they could have shipped more, but it would have cut into Europe's supply. They'll ship more to the US when they have a high enough allocated amount manufactured for shipping. They're not going to ship 50k or 100k here or there, they do it in large batches due to the logistics of it all which is some pretty huge shit with the volume they deal with.

According to Pachter and others, they probably manufacture about a million per month. They'll have maybe 7 million made by March 31st, but only a bit over 6 million will make it into stores. Shit does not move just instantly.
