It's far too early for people to make these types of assessments. Microsoft's current prices are unreasonable, but that doesn't spell doom for the console. Neither console has an impressive library at the moment and the Xbox's games will look better in the near future. Everyone needs to calm down.

Ya, ps3 proves that you can recover from a horrible start.

Honestly though having just sony and Nintendo wouldn't be the end of the world. There is enough competition for gamers outside of the console arena that I'm not worried about them getting a monopoly.

Yeah, it's not like consoles are in their own little bubble anymore. There's Steam, potentially Amazon, etc.

Microsoft needs to cut their prices immediately if they have any hope of doing "well" and that cut needs to be under the PS4's price. If Sony sells every single unit again this month and Microsoft barely moves any stock they are going to have a massive pile (upwards of 2 million) of Xbones just sitting around and that is not good. You have retailers refusing to buy more from them while desperately trying to move the overstock that they have. Meanwhile they likely have a production contract with the factories of them producing a million a month for 9-12 months out. It's a really bad situation for them - especially if you have a lot of investors wanting to dump the division.

Something needs to happen for Microsoftnow, not a year or two out.

If Feb / March NPDs are as bad as assumed for MS, they'll likely stop shipments in mid-April, and restart them with a Kinect-less, cheaper SKU announced at E3 and available in stores that week.

And I've been saying for months, E3 2014 will be the mother of all moneyhats for MS. Shadow Complex, Trials, Spelunky, etc. etc. etc., they will checkbook +1 installments only for the Xbone.

If you take anything Sean says as reality MS wouldn't haven't even launched an Xbox one, and is now in the dog grooming business.

Any word on the numbers so far?
PS4 is 5.3 million sold as of February 8th.

Xbone we don't know theexactnumbers on, but it's estimated to be around 3.3m sold. They announced 3 million sold at the end of December (and 3.9 million shipped) and they sold 140k in NA in January per the NPD. They likely sold a similar number in the rest of the world outside of NA.

Is this the kind of journalism we are resorting to now? From a Link Baiting website...

Well at least while reading that, I also found out that Amazon.com will die soon, and that I shouldn't be worried about getting a new phone because soon we will talk to each other through telepathy.

Pretty Sure Xbox since launch has offered bundle deals from all vendors. Right now if you go to the MS store they will give you 10% off, and they have changed that deal to different things once a month.
End of the world guys Walmart offers a free game with an Xbox one! They must be failing haha

Only 4 days removed from hisMicrosoft Corporation's Xbox One Looks Like a Total Failurearticle. Wait, I think I've heard this tune before.

There are valid points to be made as a result of the post-holiday sales figures, but this is a marathon, not a sprint, and even if MS doesn't win it (and nobody in their right mind at this point should predict that they are) we are all better off if they complete the race - which they will.

I relocated the Xbone to the media room the past few days to play Titanfall in surround-sound but I did so without moving the Kinect. Know what happened as a result? Nothing. Well other than the Xbone being annoyed that "Kinnect is disconnected!" there was no net loss of functionality save having to choose my profile to login rather than having it cheerily greet me when I walked in. Oh and I didn't feel like a tool asking for the Xbox to turn on like 6 times before it actually worked... I just hit the power button on the controller.

Microsoft needs to face the reality that despite all the cool things they envisioned the Kinect doing and therefore the necessity of having it as part of the base system it just does not work and they need to abandon this notion. I don't think any fault lies in the makers of the Kinect hardware as we see videos and projects of people all over making use of the hardware to do some amazing things. I think the blame lies squarely in the software development side of things and if I had to guess with specifications that demanded a far too small memory / CPU footprint for the Kinect interface.

If Nintendo released a real console and not some gimmicky box, like they used to, they would blow everyone away. For some reason they think people want to wave around sticks and have some giant wiiu controller instead though.

There is no game I see coming I would even think of buying an xbone, even with a kinectless version and deeply discounted price.

Dunno - as a media control center thing I personally could give it a ton of slack on games once the price is right, personally.

Maybe I'm crazy but they could walk a fine line between having their own hardware offerings and delivering their software to the masses by just embracing PCs. They can develop whatever peripherals they want, it's an open market with a large install base and their games would sell like hot cakes. They could still make decent $$ from selling their own hardware for PCs, never having to take a loss to move console units and get to compete graphically with high end consoles. It's Win/Win in my eyes.

I guess, my media machine is already a PC so I only need gaming, and they are failing since its coming to PC anyway if its supposedly exclusive so far.

True - still not done a HTPC here yet - tune might change once that happens (I've got to repair this machine - when I get around to bothering with the repair, I'll likely do a full rebuild and the spare parts + a few parts make my first HTPC though).

You'd be crazy to think that gaming PC's have such a large install base like they used to though. Selling a cheap console is the way to go, but they just obfuscate everything with their stupid wands and attachments.

They could just become a game studio pumping out AAA quality titles like they normally do but instead putting them on other systems, Xbox, PC, Sony, Steambox (PC) etc. Then they offer up gameboy connectivity to any system that will have it. Sony might balk but not for long. I'd bet MS would jump on it so fast they might just start throwing money at Nintendo for the chance of exclusivity.

MS + Gameboy
Sony + Vita + PS Now
PC + Steambox + Gameboy

It would be the greatest competitive generation of gaming for all gamers of all systems everywhere.

Wii U seems to be moving away from the "gimmicks" that plagued the wii. I know the new DK game that comes out tomorrow doesnt utilize the gamepad at all and the 3d mario did less times than I could count on both hands.

I skipped the wii and have not owned a Nintendo product since early Gamecube. For me the wii u is awesome even if only for backlogged wii games I missed out on (not to take away from the few solid wii u titles available). That goes double when they start adding DS games to the virtual console.

One thing I do enjoy about Nintendo is there propensity to deliver full games. No DLC bullshit, no buggy content or fps drops. Their studios take the time to release games the way they should be. Having played PS3 primarily as my console of choice last gen, I really appreciate that quality in Nintendo's products. Unfortunately therein may lie the problem for most core gamers. Without 3rd party support, these games are too few and far between. As someone who seems to be finding less and less time to get immersed in the AAA titles releasing on other systems, wii u's simplicity has been refreshing for me and I certainly see it's potential place amongst the console market.
