I watched Grimm then went to start Supernatural based on recommendations. I liked Grimm, couldn't get through the first season of Supernatural. It was just too "try hard" while also being goofy.

Think I had the same experience. Grimm was campy and fun. Supernatural was campy and just weird to me.

Maybe its something about the order you watched them in. Wasnt supernatural first by a long time?

Supernatural was great in early seasons, mid to later seasons got stupid.

Grimm was ok but always seemed like kind of a cheesy intentionally silly take on the genre.

Supernatural is all angels vs demons but really has some great characters. It starts picking up around s3. Late seasons are hit or miss but the monster of the week episodes are usually good.

The first 5 seasons of Supernatural were planned out and well executed. It builds and gets better each season and has a phenomenal payoff. Seasons 6-15 had some good parts and some not so good parts, but overall it was better than average TV.

The show had enough of a following for the renewals to keep happening, they do have good moments in later seasons but the demon and myth lore goes crazy places and loops a few times.

Worth watching?
Kinda like has been said. The original series was just going to be 5 seasons. And the first five built up and pay off well. Admittedly S1 is a little slow getting it's footing. Seasons 6-12 or so was because the CW backed up a dump truck of money because at the end of season 5 Supernatural was very probably the biggest thing that network had going. They're OK, as mentioned, they shine when they do isolated stories, but the "big story arcs" started getting strained. I enjoyed up to this point, a lot of it was because they also had Ben Edlund on the writing team and I love his work (creator of The Tick) and he writes great dialogue, and they did cast a great actor as the "Demon of the crossroads" who became a recurring character.
After S12, IMHO, it started to wear out badly. My wife and I made it through the next to last season, then something like one episode into the last season where even the level of "pot committed" (to borrow a poker term) could keep us wanting to watch. This I think gets thoroughly covered in the Supernatural thread on here.
Should also be noted that Eric Kripke was the show runner for Supernatural, and also the guy who decided to push to make The Boys. He has a set of actors he really liked from Supernatural so now you see them showing up in the Boys.

I mean, after watching the bloopers and outtakes Jensen Ackles just seems like a fun guy in general.

Back on jenson, the guy has been awesome for years. He's been a hidden treasure for years it's feel like. There is multiple videos of stuff talking about what what he wouldn't do on camera.

Essentially the guys from supernatural agree that it was best to stay with easy paychecks and deal with there family Jensen being the one that held the show. Supernatural probably wouldn't have lasted without out him
