So a longtime player of mine started to DM for a new group and invited me to play. The rest of the players are all pretty brand new to ttrpg and my old man era is beginning because the entitlement of these people who are my age but new to to ttrpgs kills me. We made characters and two of the guys just assumed you could roll for stats and did so away from the table.... of course their lowest stat was a 12 and they both somehow had double 18s...

How do people not understand the game is only fun if failure is an actual option.. also rolling an 18 with 4d6 drop the lowest is like a 2% chance... cheat better lol

Oh man we made chars one time back in 3.5. We watched as my friend rolled 3 18s. we were all like omfg. And he was a paladin.

They seem to be entirely up to the gm how they go out, or if they are in the game at all. My setting is lousy with rituals in the game im running. They have like five at level 2 heh. Most are home brewed

I've been out of the loop but do people now want to roll characters? How many dice per stat? My first DnD characters were made using 4d6 roll six times place in order. By the time I had moved on to 3.0 the DMs I knew were up to 5d6 roll six times place them anywhere. The point-buy in 4th edition has problems but I was pretty sick of rolling by then. What do the roll and point by systems look like now?

I fucking love rolling, that's why I do it. My last DM let us do 4 dice, drop the lowest and no stats could be under 10, I think. I actually didn't know about the no stats under 10 part so I had a couple of low ones until deep into the campaign. I once had someone who wanted me to do a point buy after I had rolled the character because he thought I cheated. So I rolled again in front of him and got better stats. I also roll for HP when I level. I have a whole ritual with practice rolls where I weed out the dice that are rolling like shit, then get a feel for a pattern and go "OK this one's for real". Doing all that I get the same rolls as anyone else, but I got to roll my dice like 100 times and think i get better results.

With that said, I started reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl books and they just started a kickstarter for their RPG, which will be supported by a couple of the VTTs...I just don't think it's going to be released by the time we finish DotMM. I'd love to run that, though.

I was going to suggest the DCC stuff. It should be out in a few days shouldn't it? The backer kit campaign is about to end. I bought in on the backerkit and I want to play it but as I understand, you don't get to roll as much so I might not like it. There was an unofficial version out for a while they were playing on discord and I'm assuming it's the same game.

Here's a google doc with the unofficial version rules.
