This is a grown up thing, right? I don't consider it sports enough to put it in the sports forum.

I'm hitting up Lake Erie this afternoon to see if the perch are biting.

Few weeks ago we did alright (50 limit per person).

I love the fishing.

I sure wouldn't want to filet all those little perches, though. I rarely keep fish, not because I'm a Catch and Release nut, I just don't like cleaning them.

Haven't been out very much this summer because of health bullshit, but I love fishing farm ponds and streams.

Yeah, it took a bit of time for little chicken nugget sized pieces. I think we ended up with about 3.5 lbs of edible fishy.

But it's worth it when you slather it in a fish crisp mixture and deep fry the shit out of it.

This is what's gonna happen today:

Perch is tasty, just a lot of work to process.

My dads side of the family all live on a big lake in central MO(and my dad has a lakehouse down there) We do mostly bass/crappie fishing. I prefer the taste of crappie, it is just about my favorite fish to eat, but bass are a lot more fun to catch, they put up a lot more fight. But we definitely don't turn away any perch or bluegill that we catch in the process.

They do have a large 5-ish acre pond on their land as well that is stocked with bass and catfish. Catfishing is a somewhat boring endeavor though, but it's great for sitting around camping/drinking and catching a fish or 2 per hour while you wait. Those things are a hell of a fight to bring in, but I don't particularly like eating them, the smaller fish are a lot better, IMHO. I just don't like the extra fishy-flavor of catfish, those bottom-dweller fish tend to end up tasting denser/murkier or something, it's hard to describe.

I need a recommendation for pier fishing in SoCal.

I have a lot of time off and want to go throw a line off the docks and pull some fish up.

I guess I need advice on pole, lures, live bait, hooks, etc..

Do you need a permit to do that in California? That's the one thing that keeps me from traveling with my fishing pole, I don't know what the laws & regulations are in each state. I don't need some crappy $250 fine for throwing my line in a random lake in another state.

Perch are the candy of fresh water fish, fuck they are good.

I lost all my fishing equipment in my car fire....still trying to get the insurance company to replace it.

Growing up, my family owned a bait shot and we were fairly well known in the Mid Michigan area. All I did growing up was fishing or we would go up into the U.P. to dip our own minnows for the shop. I remember waking up in the morning to my dad getting home when it was time for me to get ready for school to find a bath tub full of fish on ice that he was going to clean when he got up from sleeping and resting from fishing all night. lol

Fishing is the biz man.

For my bachelor party we rented a big charter boat on Lake Ontario and fished Salmon all morning while drinking heavily and eating breakfast foodstuffs. It was a great wholesome bachelor party...

...until we went to the casino and strip clubs later that day. Possibly still smelling like fish.

ITS A CELEBRATION, BITCHES.

I caught a yellow perch the other day for the first time and found cleaning it a total bitch. What's the recommended procedure for that? I tried scaling it and then fileting it but the friggin scales were hard as shit to scrape off.

Pic: Staying at Flathead Lake for the summer and am catching the shit out of these northern pikeminnows. Good, flaky, white meat, but tons of tiny pin bones.

Is that a rattletrap lure?

I can say I've never even heard of a pikeminnow before. Do they fight?

And 'Bisi, that's a nice BIG perch.

We use pike minnows as bait for other larger fish generally. That seems larger than what I know a Pike Minnow to be though so maybe it's a regional thing.

I grew up fishing for bass and catfish, but in college, I learned to fly fish and my interests turned to trout.

Now, I really don't care about trout fishing, but I still use the fly fishing rig for largemouth and smallmouth. The limber action of the rod produces fewer big fish (for me, anyway), but I love the action and fight, especially with the smallies. And bluegill are fun as hell with a flyrod.

Ya they put up a helluva fight, it's fun. According to Wiki they can get up to 24" and 8 lbs. There's a bounty program in parts of the Columbia River for em because apparently they are voracious predators on salmon smelt, anywhere from $4-$8 per fish caught over 9". One guy last year made $54k catching them over summer. Was thinking about making a weekend of it sometime soon.

I'm on the east coast but I'd imagine you'd need a license. Can always ask the local tackle shop. Id buy a cheap surf/reel combo to start. Shakespeare makes a few decent ones for under 60 and normally come with 20lb test. Should be fine but again, I don't live there so not sure what's in season. If it were me and I had to start somewhere I would start with that combo and a 2oz dipsie with probably a 2/0 hook and some squid.

Pretty sure most people know the pikeminnow as squawfish. I grew up with a lot of fishermen type and have never heard of eating them.

I partially paid my way thru college fishing bass tournaments. In East Texas it's a huge business and at the time I lived less than an hour or two from some of the best lakes in the country. I lived right on Sam Ruburn, a short time from Toledo, Fork, Murval (the previous TX record holder before Fork), Caddo etc...My roomate was more serious than i was and I eventually got burned out on it. 20 years later and he still fishes competitively. A few spring semesters I had class on Monday, Tuesday, and finished up at noon on Wed. so I had lots of time to pre-fish the tournaments. Over the 5 years I fished competively getting my BS and MS I cleared about $10k a year after exenses which wasn't bad considering the Sons of the Republic (of TX) paid my tuition and I lived rent free. My room mate taught me a lot about bass fishing and he loved it that I could use the company credit card to fill the boat and truck up each outing.

Now I mainly just fish saltwater here along the coast in Louisiana, much less competitive and more relaxing.

Lake Erie was flat tonight. Caught three nice sized walleye and some silver bass using leadcore.

Thanks for all the advice. I think the license for a year here is like $35 and might be cheaper for veterans.
