Figure it wouldn't hurt to have a thread where we can post favorite horror movies or heads up on new ones worth watching.

Grave Encounters was kind of a decent horror movie. After sifting through so many creepy hospital/asylum movies on Netflix that turned out being people dealing with inner demons rather than actual demons or ghosts it was a nice change to see the environment devolve into just a mess of weird supernatural stuff. Some cliche themes and overused after effects fx but it seemed to work in this case.

If anyone hasn't seen cabin in the woods, you are missing out.
Fun as hell movie.

The horror genre has seem to found itself in a rut lately, it's either all found footage stuff, or saw type torture porn.
While they can both be enjoyable, we need more.

While I have hope for the evil dead remake, I'm not sure how much I'm willing to hold my breath.

I dug Absentia on netflix instant.

Wake wood was good.

Also, honestly went through a bunch of Vincent Price movies on there, was great.

I enjoyed Cabin In the Woods as the clever send-up (with a twist) that it was... and have also enjoyed relatively recent fare such asThe GrudgeandThe Ring. I thought the originalSawwas freakin' wonderful... But for me the two greatest movies in this genre are Robert Wise'sThe Haunting(1963) and Jack Clayton'sThe Innocents(1961). Julie Harris in the former and Deborah Kerr in the latter both give the performances of their careers (and Claire Bloom inThe Hauntingis extra delicious.) Both films are superbly directed by men who knew how to manipulate your emotions through their editing, sound and camera work (Wise started out as an editor -- seeCitizen Kane-- and directed such diverse gems asThe Day The Earth Stood Still,Run Silent Run Deep,The Sound of MusicandThe Andromeda Strain. Oh, andStar Trek: The Motion Picture, but that was the writer's fault

.)

BothThe HauntingandThe Innocentsare examples of writers/directors/actors scaring the shit out of you without the audience ever seeing anything really scary/gory/freaky. Call them psychological ghost stories rather than horror, but both are classic examples of brilliant film making. Just make sure you watch them in their original CinemaScope formats.

(EDIT: I thoughtThe Others(2001) did a real nice job of this as well.)

On the same topic has anyone seen The Collection? I really enjoyed the Collector and am wondering if this is as good.

For a few of my favorite horror films. I am a big werewolf fan even though they are not all that scary generally.

Werewolf movies - American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Silver bullet.
Cabin in the Woods.
The Exorcist.
Trick 'R Treat. I really enjoyed Sam and the Ladies.
Sci fi Horror - Alien, The Thing, Event Horizon.
I also enjoyed In The Mouth of Madness.

It's the Holidays!!

Silent Night, Deadly Night.

The remake that came out this year wasn't too bad either. For only being in theaters 3 days.

Gremlins is the all time best Christmas Horror.

There is also Black Christmas but its been so long since I saw it I make no claims as to it being good or bad.

Stake Landwas pretty good, the end felt kind of botched but it didn't really take too much away from how good the rest of it was.
The Holeis a pretty good re-imagining of a few different big name horror movies by Joe Dante, 80's/90's cheesy horror style.
Strigoiwas a really fun zombie movie and does a good job at creating a kind of claustrophobic atmosphere within an eastern european redneck Lovecraftian conspiracy setting.
Lovely Mollywas fucking creepy and got cringe worthy gory and uncomfortable at times but not in a torture porn way since the rough scenes really helped the movie along; it was kind of predictable but the main girl did a great job of slowly falling apart throughout.
Yellow Brick Roadcould have been incredible and ruined itself by going up it's own ass with pretension, some people might like the documentarian nature of it and about 60% or the movie is really good so I'll throw it on here.
Exit Humanityis one that I've recommended to a lot of people and nobody has liked it so far. It's kind of like Stake Land but zombies instead of vampires and set after the civil war. Borrows some from more popular movies but I liked seeing them take a shot at trying something different with the genre.
The Possession of David O'Reillygot a bit hectic with the camera work and lighting sometimes but had really good creature design and did a really good job making you see things as if it were just out of the corner of the character's eyes. Some really creepy scenes and the directors did a great job at playing with the pacing at the appropriate times plus the main dude kind of looks like the guy from Coldplay so the movie is basically Chris Martin getting mentally tortured and chased by demons.
Pontypoolis probably one of my favorite horror movies from recent years. It completely does something different with the zombie genre and also centralizes all of the story and character development within one set. Set in a radio station and very dialogue driven, it's like Mamet made a zombie film.
Recently watched a movie from the Philippines calledThe Roadthat was pretty good, three intertwining stories set over the course of 20ish years. Has a cool Psycho set in the jungle vibe.

yeah, Yellow brick road starts off interesting, and completely shits itself.

They took the white noise premise, and went stupid with it. While conversely, pontypool does it well. Or the likes of Fallout3 and that one vault.

Does Cube count as Horror? I'd recommend Cube and Cube 3. Cube 2 is a guilty pleasure, but not that good. I used Cube 2 to fall asleep to a lot because I enjoyed the cinematography.

The Changeling with George C. Scott is horrendously underrated, but well worth the watch.

not a big horror movie fan but I watched "Sinister" last night and enjoyed it and was mildly creeped out. The Super 8 footage was only the parts of the film that got me though, the rest was your standard 2000+ tricks of making kids look creepy (yawn) and stupid scenes where the 'monster' appears to break 4th wall. The soundtrack really helps set the tone too

Ironically starring Jenny from the Block, of whom I cannot stand. Has to be one of my favorite horror movies.

Love Cabin in the Woods. Mothman Prophecies was kind of creepy as well, not sure I would call it horror though. Couple of scenes that scared the shit out of me though. Also, goes without saying, The Exorcist.
